UJ Women’s Soccer loses in double OT, Saturday

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. (uj.edu)– Georgia Vernardakis scored in the 109th minute as Baker (Kan.) University squeezed by the University of Jamestown women’s soccer team 1-0 in double overtime Saturday evening.

Baker had a slight edge in shots (9-6) and shots on target (4-2) over the Jimmies in the opening 45 minutes, but neither team was able to capitalize on its scoring chances.

Each team managed just two shots on goal in the second half. Jamestown’s final goal attempt came with 12:48 left in regulation, but Wildcat goalkeeper Taylor Roger made the save. Baker took two shots in the final nine minutes of the second half, but both went wide of the goal.

Roger was shown a yellow card 2:14 into the first overtime and the Jimmies were awarded a penalty kick. However, Cassandra Diaz (FR/Montebello, Calif.)’s attempt was saved by Roger and the stalemate ensued.

With just 70 seconds left in the second overtime, Vernardakis came through with the game-winner.

Shots ended 20-12 (8-5 on goal) in favor of Baker as did corner kicks (5-4).

Deisy Rodriguez (JR/Anaheim, Calif.) collected seven saves for the Jimmies.
