Laquone Robinson, interim head coach

VALLEY CITY  (VCSU)   – Valley City State University athletic director Jill DeVries announced Friday that Laquone Robinson has been named interim head coach of the VCSU track and field and cross country programs.

Robinson is currently a full-time assistant track and field coach at Minnesota State University Moorhead. He will start at Valley City State on Dec. 1.

“We’re excited to welcome Laquone into our athletic department and the VCSU campus community,” said DeVries. “Laquone impressed us with his vision for our program, his connections in hiring assistant coaches, his strong recruiting background and his energy for the job. With indoor competition starting soon, we wanted to move quickly in hiring a new head coach for our student-athletes, and we feel like we found a great fit with Laquone.”

The Vikings are set to begin the 2019-20 indoor season with a meet Dec. 7 at the University of Mary in Bismarck.

Robinson was in his fourth season as an assistant coach at MSUM, and worked the previous two seasons as a graduate assistant at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, S.D. At MSUM, Robinson’s main coaching areas were the sprints, hurdles, multi’s and javelin. He was also heavily involved in recruiting.

“I am thrilled and honored to be named the head coach at VCSU,” said Robinson. “I’m excited to build relationships with each of my student-athletes and to foster their growth as student learners, young professionals, and collegiate athletes. I have full confidence that together we will accomplish great things.”

Prior to becoming a coach, Robinson was a standout athlete at MSUM from 2009-13, excelling primarily in the jumps and hurdles. He still holds six MSUM school records, including the indoor 60 meter hurdles, indoor heptathlon and outdoor 110 meter hurdles. He earned several conference and region Athlete of the Year honors during his MSUM competitive career, and was a 13-time NSIC Champion and a three-time NCAA Division II All-American.

Robinson is a native of Brooklyn Center, Minn. He earned an exercise science degree from MSUM in 2013, along with minors in coaching and strength and conditioning. While at Augustana, he completed the coursework for a master’s degree in sports administration and leadership. Robinson is married to his wife, Sara.

Valley City State University is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and a conference member of the North Star Athletic Association.
