Thurs Men’s College Volleyball, Grand View University defeats Jamestown 25 – 22, 25 – 23, 25 – 21
DES MOINES, Iowa (uj.edu) — The UJ men’s volleyball team faced their toughest competition yet in their brief history in the form of No. 2 Grand View University.
Jamestown gave the Vikings all they could handle Thursday as Grand View emerged with a 25-22, 25-23, 25-21 victory, handing the Jimmies their first loss of the season.
Neither team led by more than two points in the first set until back to back kills by Felix Chapman and Bayron Valdez gave GVU an 18-15 lead. UJ trailed 24-20 before an attack error and a Caylor Cox (FR/Helena, Mont.) kill made it 24-22.
The second set saw much of the same, with Grand View taking leads of 12-9 and 13-10 before stretching their advantage to 19-15. Following a Viking attack error, Jamestown rallied behind the serving of Derek Correa (FR/Vega Baja, Puerto Rico), rifling off three straight points to tie the set at 19.
UJ took four-point leads of 8-4, 10-6, and 12-8 in the third set, and led 17-15 when Grand View used a 6-2 run to pull ahead 21-19 and sway the match’s momentum in their favor. Four of the final six points in the third went the way of the VIkings to secure the match.
Clark Steele (JR/Lake Forest, Calif.) had 14 kills while Cox added 11 and hit .450 for the match. Correa passed out 40 assists. Cox and Braden Neumann (JR/Costa Mesa, Calif.) had seven digs each, and Nick Vanags (FR/San Diego, Calif.) recorded three block assists.
Jamestown had 44 kills to Grand View’s 40 but made 19 errors in 84 attempts, while the Vikings made 12 errors in 77 attempts. Digs were 21-20 in favor of UJ
Next up for the Jimmies (2-1) is a Friday match against Indiana Tech University at 7 p.m. in Oskaloosa, Iowa, as part of the William Penn University Quadrangular.
