Men’s UJ Volleyball

OSKALOOSA, Iowa  (uj.edu) — The University of Jamestown men’s volleyball team recorded their first two sweeps of the season Saturday, defeating William Penn University 25-13, 25-14, and 25-14, then took care of Viterbo (Wis.) University 25-21, 25-23, and 25-20.

Jamestown finished 3-0 at the William Penn Quadrangular and are now 5-1 this season. The Jimmies will host their first home game Thursday against Briar Cliff (Iowa) at 7 p.m.

The Jimmies outhit the 1-5 Statesmen .303-.029 including a 43-15 advantage in kills in Saturday’s opening match.

Nick Vanags (FR/San Diego, Calif.) had 16 kills and only three errors in 29 attempts to hit .448 while Austin Jacob (FR/Houston, Texas) hit .563 on the strength of 10 kills and one error in 16 attempts. Clark Steele (JR/Lake Forest, Calif.) finished with nine kills and hit .467 in 15 attempts as well.

Derek Correa (FR/Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) had 31 assists and Caylor Cox (FR/Helena, Mont.) turned up 13 digs. Steele, Jacob, and Braden Neumann (JR/Costa Mesa, Calif.) all had six digs each.

Jamestown made it a second straight sweep on Saturday, defeating the 5-6 V-Hawks in three sets.

Despite making a season-high 27 attack errors, the Jimmies still managed to outhit Viterbo .200-.109. Jamestown also outdug the V-Hawks 43-32.

Steele led the offense with 15 kills while Vanags was also in double figures with 14. Jacob had nine kills and hit .467 for the match, while Cox finished with eight kills and a team-high 18 digs.

Correa passed out 46 assists, and Jacob led the net defense with five total blocks, including three solo.
