Melvin Gahner, 93, Jamestown, N.D., died Monday, Nov. 9, 2020, at Ave Maria Village, Jamestown.
Melvin Gahner was born April 15, 1927, in LaMoure County, N.D., the son of Jacob and Johanna (Deibert) Gahner. He was raised on the family farm and went to country school in Sharlow Township. He was drafted in 1945 and served in the United States Air Force Reserve for three years. He received a diploma for special training and was honorably discharged in 1948. He married Eleanor Schrenk on Feb. 13, 1949. They lived on a farm west of Sidney, N.D., until 1953. They moved to Jamestown for a short time, and then moved back to the farm. They moved to Eldridge, N.D., in 1964. Melvin and Eleanor were both proud employees at Eldridge School. In 2004, they moved to Jamestown. Eleanor moved to Eventide at Hi-Acres in 2005 and died in 2011. Melvin moved to Heritage Center in 2012 then to Ave Maria Village in 2017. Over the years he worked as a grocery delivery driver, school bus driver and custodian, truck driver, and grain elevator worker. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church, Jamestown.
Melvin is survived by four sons, Greg, Reno, Nev., Mark (Cindy), McClusky, N.D., Tom and Darrin, both Jamestown; three sisters, Irene Oster, Jamestown, Lenora (Gregory) Hill, Alamogordo, N.M., and Elma (Reinhold) Delzer, Aberdeen, S.D.; two brothers, Roy, Bismarck, N.D., and Jacob Jr. (Marilyn), Mesa, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Ian, Sparks, Nev., and Rebecca, Reno, Jay (Darci), McClusky, and Kristin (Stuart) Wahl, Bismarck, and Caitlin, Fargo, N.D.; five great-grandchildren, Carter (Karissa) and Taylor (Chase) Jacobson, and Evan, Parker and Emily Wahl; and two great-great-grandchildren, Emmanuel and Gabriel.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Herbert; wife; and special friend Marge Lange.
A private family service will be held.
