BOURBONNAIS, Ill.  (UJ)  — The University of Jamestown men’s soccer team lost 5-2 to Olivet Nazarene University Saturday evening in the 2021 season opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Tigers scored two quick goals in the span of 67 seconds to take a 2-0 lead in the ninth minute. Benjamin Struebelt (from Gustavo Mancera) and Nick Kilian (from Max Jasper) had the goals for the home team.

In the 29th minute, a cross from Diego Valle (SR/Yucaipa, Calif.) found Joel Hyland (FR/Manchester, England), who put the ball in the net, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Despite being outshot 10-4 overall and 7-3 in shots on target, the Jimmies trailed by just a goal at the halftime break.

Valle tied the match in the 48th minute with an unassisted goal, but ONU didn’t need long to retake the lead. Ruben D’Hollosy made it 3-2 a minute and 22 seconds after Valle’s equalizer, then made it 4-2 in the 63rd minute by converting a rebound off of a Maxim Ngom shot. Max Jasper rounded out the scoring in the 67th minute, scoring off a corner kick by Kilian.

Jimmie keeper Alex Hamer (SR/Solihull, England) was credited with five saves. Shots ended 19-5 in favor of ONU, as well as shots on goal (10-4).

NEXT UP: UJ stays in Bourbonnais to face Roosevelt University in a neutral-site match Monday at 11 a.m.
