Darald Olson, 83, of Jamestown, ND died on January 30, 2022 at Ave Maria Village in Jamestown.
Darald was born on July 1, 1938 at Jamestown Hospital to Ole and Selma Olson.
After graduating from Jamestown High School in 1956, Darald attended short courses at North Dakota State University. As he continued the farm work, a young teacher at the one room school in Deer Lake township came into the picture. He would buzz over the school with his airplane to get her attention. Shirleen Ellen Nelson and Darald were married on October 15, 1961 at Pingree Lutheran Church. The couple had three children and raised them on the family farm. During this time, Darald served on numerous boards including the Jamestown-Medina Farmer’s Union Oil Company board, the Stutsman County Farmers Union board, and the Deer Lake Township board. After many years of living in the country, they moved to Jamestown in 2014.
Darald loved farming and never thought of it as work. He said he woke up every morning excited to get something done. On a nice October day this past fall, he finished up the soybean harvest. He also loved flying his Aeronca Champ and flew up until his birthday on July 2021. He enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins, attending his grandchildren’s swimming events, and eating good food, especially lutefisk.
Darald will be remembered by many as hard-working, strong, generous, and funny. He modeled these characteristics for his family every day. He will be deeply missed.
Darald was preceded in death by his wife Ellen, his parents, and sisters Agnes Olson, Maurinda Rosemore, and Delores Boyle and sister-in-law Joan Johnson. He is survived by his daughter Beth Ferguson (Mark) of Fargo, son Steve Olson of Valley View, Texas, and son Owen (Maria) Olson of Jamestown; grandchildren Kasey and Ryan Ferguson and Nicholas and Andrew Olson. He is also survived by brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws Frank Johnson, Bismarck, ND, Ernest (Glenda) Nelson Jr., Hutchison, MN, Patricia (Jerry) Wallace, Kennewick, WA, and Mary (Frank) Hum, Herndon, VA, in addition to several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on February 5, 2022 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jamestown, ND with Pastor Kristi Weber officiating. Visitation will be Friday, February 4 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Eddy Funeral Home in Jamestown and one hour before the service at the church.
