Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Aug 26, 2013) —  Jamestown Public School’s Superintendent  Robert Lech, is informing all parents and staff that public schools will be dismissing at 1:00 p.m. for the remainder of the week, from Tuesday August 27 – Friday, August 30th, 2013.

He says, “While this is certainly an unusual occurrence, as we assessed our facilities  through the course of today and factored in the forecasted heat index, we believe that it is in the best interest of our students and the educational environment to operate on the shortened schedule for the duration of this week.  Understand that while some of our schools do have full or partial air-conditioning, it was not feasible to make a school closure decision on a school-by-school basis.  Please be aware that, if the weather does improve and allow for a full day of instruction, we will notify you through the calling system.  Our staff will utilize this additional time for teaming time and other professional development opportunities.

Additionally, The open house at Jamestown Middle School, “What’s Poppin’ at JMS?”, originally scheduled for Tuesday, August 27, 2013 has been postponed to Tuesday, September 10, 7:00-8:00 pm.”

St. John’s Academy Principal Mark Wiest says St. John’s Academy in Jamestown has decided that it will dismiss school at 1-p.m., the rest of the week, due to excessive heat in the school buildings from unseasonably hot temperatures.

Meanwhile, Valley City public Schools Superintendent Dean Koppelman has canceled the opening day of school set for Wednesday, August 28, 2013, due to the excessive heat this week. Koppelman says a number of buildings in the Valley City school district do not have air conditioning.  On Thursday and Friday this week, Valley City Public Schools will start at the regular times.

Dismissals Thursday and Friday this week will be at 1:10 p.m., for Valley City Public elementary schools both days, and at 1:30 -p.m. for the junior and senior high.
