Mrs. Ella Mae Cowen, residing in Phoenix, AZ passed away July 9, 2023. She was born March 21, 1929, to Gena and Carl Rogne Sr. of Dazey, ND.
Ella Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley, after being married 66 years and eight of her siblings. She is survived by a daughter, Margaret Jo (Peggy), of Fort Worth, Texas; a son, Charles Stanley (Chuck), of Spokane, Washington; one granddaughter; and one great granddaughter.
Upon graduation from Dazey High School in 1947, one of three in her class that year, she attended Mercy School of Nursing in Valley City completing her training in the summer of 1950. In December of that year, she married Stan and they moved to Fort Benning, Georgia where Stan was a member of the Army’s 164th Guard. On return to Valley City from Georgia, Ella Mae expanded her RN skills to work as a surgical nurse with Dr. Klein at Mercy Hospital. 1957 had them moving out west to The Dalles, Oregon where Ella Mae continued her nursing skills at the local hospital and an elder care facility in the neighborhood. In addition, she raised her children and took care of the household duties.
Ella Mae was an avid bridge player acquiring master points at the duplicate bridge games held in the area. She enjoyed collecting depression glass of many varieties and colors. In later years when travel overseas was to take place for her granddaughter’s wedding, identification issues arose since Ella Mae never had acquired a driver’s license.
She will be missed by family and friends. Interment will be held September 9, 2023, at 11:00 AM, at the Dazey Cemetery with a gathering of fellowship and light lunch to follow at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Dazey. In lieu of flowers please donate to a favorite charity.
