VALLEY CITY – The Valley City State track and field team won 18 events and set a new school record Tuesday as the Vikings hosted their annual Viking Twilight Meet.
The women’s 4×100 relay team set a new school record by almost a full second as they rounded the track in a time of 50.54 seconds. VCSU’s team of Olivia Backus, Lily Baldwin, Karina Olson and Shanti Adams broke the old school record of 51.45 set back in 1997.
Tuesday’s meet included athletes from Valley City State, Concordia-Moorhead, University of Minnesota-Morris, University of Jamestown and a few throwers from North Dakota State University.
VCSU’s women won 11 different events, including two each by Karina Olson, Olivia Backus and Sadie Hansen. The Viking men won 7 individual events, including two each by both Jaiden Peraza and Clay Kummer.
Olson won both the 100- and 200-meter sprints, and Backus set a new personal-best in the high jump (1.60 meters) as she won both high jump and long jump. Hansen won a pair of throwing events, taking first place in both shot put and discus. Other VCSU meet champions included the 4×100 relay team, Mathea Jablonsky (400 hurdles), Morgan Haerer (800 meters), Jasmine Barnes (1500 meters) and Kendra Odegard (javelin).
Clay Kummer won both the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles for the Viking men, and Jaiden Peraza took home titles in high jump and long jump. Mohammed Dukuly won the 200 meters; Omarion Brown won the 400 meters; and Cameron Champagnie won the triple jump.
VCSU’s women finished with 250 points while the men racked up 236 points. Both VCSU teams won the team title for total points. The Vikings also took time during the meet to recognize their seven seniors on Senior Day: Jasmine Barnes, Morgan Haerer, Lily Baldwin, Tayla Mullings, Clay Kummer, Cody Jundt (student assistant) and Joplin Fink (student manager).
Up next: VCSU is scheduled to compete Saturday at the Ron Masanz Classic hosted by Minnesota State University-Moorhead, weather permitting.
