Walter Bruno Peter, Jr, 89, Valley City, North Dakota passed away Saturday, September 21, 2024, at SMP Health-St. Raphael under the care of CHI Hospice. Burial will be at Woodbine Cemetery, Valley City. The family will be holding a private memorial service.
Walt was born January 19, 1935, to Walter and Myrtle (Mortenson) Peter in Roseglen, North Dakota. He grew up on the family farm near Page. He graduated from Page High School then attended North Dakota State College of Science Wahpeton for mechanics.
In 1955, Walter moved to Fargo, North Dakota and worked at Pioneer Mutual Insurance Company. He married Merilyn Jean Larson on June 8, 1957, in Valley City and they continued to make their home in Fargo. Later, the couple moved to Denver, Colorado and Los Angeles, California where Walter worked for Texaco Oil by running their punch card machines. In 1964, the young family moved back to North Dakota after deciding big city life was not for them. Walt and Merilyn purchased a farmstead near Rogers where they lived until 2007. They raised primarily wheat and beef cattle on the farm. Walt drove school bus, raised horses, and loved to hunt.
Walt retired in 1987 but continued his love of farming by working for Skogen Farms until 2012. Merilyn passed away in 2009.
Walter is survived by his sons Wally (Lori) Peter, Mandan, North Dakota, Wayne (Marlene) Peter, West Fargo, North Dakota; daughter Denise (Arlyn) Mund, Arvada, Colorado; 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Marion (Don) Braunberger, Anna (Bob) Langness, Alfred “Bud” (Bernie) Peter, and Jann (Glen) Dell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brothers Leonard and Carl.
