The funeral service for Dorothy M. Boom, 90, Jamestown, ND, formerly of Marion, ND, will be 1 pm Monday, January 20, 2025, at North Marion Reformed Church, rural Marion. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in the North Marion Cemetery in the spring. Dorothy passed away on Tuesday, January 14 at SMP Health-Ave Maria, Jamestown.
Dorothy Marvene Van Dyk was born November 8, 1934, the daughter of Gerrit and Nellie (Van Duyn) in Colton, SD. She was the oldest of their seven children and was raised on the family farm near Colton. Dorothy graduated from high school and worked as a bookkeeper at the local bank before marrying Donald Duane Boom on November 12, 1953. They made their home on the family farm north of Marion where they raised four children: Dwight, Darla, Diane and Duane.
Dorothy enjoyed gardening, canning, and tending to her flowers. She also liked sewing, traveling, visiting with family and friends, and square dancing. Donald and Dorothy enjoyed wintering in Mesa, Arizona in their later years.
She was a member of the North Marion Reformed Church where she served as organist and pianist for over 60 years. She was active in the R.C.W., bible studies, and church programs. Dorothy and Donald were both actively involved in the Gideon’s Bible ministry.
After retiring, Donald and Dorothy moved to Marion. After Donald’s passing in 2017, Dorothy remained there until moving to Jamestown. She resided at the Heritage Center and Rosedale.
She is survived by Dwight (Karin) Boom, Marion, Darla (Brad) Carpenter, Dickey, ND, Diane Burton, Lenexa; KS, Duane Boom, Minneapolis, MN, six grandchildren Brent Carpenter (Lacey Wagner), Jamestown, ND, Elijah (Sarah) Burton, Overland Park, KS, Tanner (Taylor) Burton, Kansas City, MO, April Boom, Page, ND, Deidra (Troy) Duchschere, Jamestown, David (Ashlee) Boom, Mandan, ND, great-grandchildren Chloe Carpenter and Elleyah Carpenter; Sawyer, Nolan, Eleanora and Archer Burton, and Hudson Boom, sisters Audrey Reurink, Colton, SD, Elaine VanLiere, Colton, SD, brother Gerald “Obie” (Carol) Van Dyk, Pella, IA, brother-in-law Jack Vandermay, Portage, MI, two sisters-in-law Jelene (Van Dyk) and Marvin, Portage, MI and Joanne and Conrad Harthoorn, Hollister, MO and many nieces and nephews
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Donald Boom, her parents Gerrit and Nellie Van Dyk, brother Marvin Van Dyk, sisters, betty Vandermay and Mary Medendorp, son-in-law John Burton, brothers -in-law and sisters-in-law Roy VanLiere, Jim Reurink, Jan Van Dyk, Allen Medendorp, father-in-law and mother-in-law Harold and Gertrude Boom, Lloyd and Lola Boom.
Memorials can be designated to the Gideon’s or North Marion Reformed Church.
