Fargo ND (NDSU) – North Dakota State wrestling’s Tristan Daugherty and Michael Olson claimed individual titles at the 54th annual Bison Open on Sunday held in front of 348 in attendance at the Scheels Center inside the Sanford Health Athletic Complex.
Daugherty claimed an individual title at 133 pounds, while Olson won at 141 pounds, with both wrestlers winning both of their matches. Daugherty started off with a 7-4 victory over South Dakota State’s Kenton Cooke to reach the final. Daugherty then wrestled a shutout over Minnesota’s Brandon Morvari with a takedown and an escape in the 133-pound title match.
Olson started off his day with a takedown and an escape in a 4-2 win over Liam Neitzel of South Dakota State to reach the final. Olson then picked up a 3-1 victory over Minnesota’s Dawson Johnson in the final to claim the 141-pound green bracket title.
Andrew McMonagle and Devon Harrison recorded runner-up finishes on the day. McMonagle reached the final with a 17-2 tech fall over Minnesota’s Joey Muhlstein and then pinned Nebraska’s Marco Christiansen. McMonagle would fall to Minnesota’s Max McEnelly in the final. Harrison had an 11-2 win over fellow Bison Aidan Wells in the semifinals, but would fall to Minnesota’s Vance Vombaur in the final.
Five Bison recorded third-place finishes on the afternoon, including Zytavius Williams, Gabriel Gallardo, Boeden Greenley, Ben Schultz and Devin Wasley. Williams overcame a loss in the semis and defeated Wells 4-1 in the third-place match. Williams also had a major decision over South Dakota State’s Kenton Cooke. Gallardo also overcame a semifinal defeat with a pin in the third-place match over South Dakota State’s Colin Dupill.
After a fall in his first match, Greenley worked his way through wrestlebacks to win 4-1 in sudden victory over Oklahoma’s Bryce Burkett. Schultz also had to run through wrestlebacks after winning with a fall in the opening match. Schultz topped Joey Muhlstein of Minnesota in sudden victory and then topped South Dakota State’s Shane McConville 5-4 for third. Wasley overcame a first round defeat with a major decision over fellow Bison Adam Cherne, and then topped Minnesota’s Silas Dailey 4-1.
North Dakota State will remain at home and host Concordia-Moorhead in the only home dual of the fall semester on November 13. The dual against the Cobbers is set to get underway at 6 p.m. at the Scheels Center inside the Sanford Health Athletic Complex.
