Ted Turner, theĀ media maverickĀ & philanthropist who founded CNN, died Weds, surrounded by his family, according to a news release from Turner Enterprises. He was 87.

A year later, at the CNN 1st Anniversary celebration in Chicago, CNN founder Ted Turner cut the cake and said, “I want to give this to a real cable guy” and presented the first piece of cake to Cable Services founder M. Roy Sheppard.
