Shirley Ann (Borderud) Schafer passed away May 25, 2026, in Mandan, ND. Shirley was born January 31, 1934, in Fargo, ND to Olga (Berg) and Fred Borderud. She was baptized and confirmed at Norman Lutheran Church, near Kindred, ND. She attended Norman Country School through 8th grade, then attended Kindred High School and graduated in 1952. Shirley attended Interstate Business College in Fargo, ND and then worked at the North Dakota American Legion State Office in Fargo from 1953-1960.
Shirley married Duane “Tiny” Schafer on October 11, 1959 at Norman Lutheran Church, Kindred. They moved to Jamestown in 1960. They had 3 sons and a daughter, then 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Shirley spent countless hours at the hockey rink and baseball/softball fields watching them compete in their numerous sports.
Shirley and Duane worked with the North Dakota Amateur Softball Association (NDASA) for many years. Duane became the North Dakota Amateur Softball Commissioner in 1960, and Shirley assisted him with this work until his death in 1996. They traveled to various cities across the country for softball tournaments and national softball conferences. Shirley then served as the Executive Secretary for the NDASA until her retirement in 2015.
Shirley received the Distinguished Service Award from the NDASA in 2016 and was elected to the North Dakota Amateur Softball Hall of Fame in 2000. She also served on the North Dakota Sports Hall of Fame Board from 2000 to 2007.
Shirley was an active member of Atonement Lutheran Church. She served as secretary of WELCA, held offices in Circle, helped make quilts for missions, served on Altar Guild and was Co-Chairman of Altar Guild for many years, and played the piano for church services at local nursing homes.
In 2021, Shirley moved from the house where she had raised her family to the Heritage Center. She recently suffered a fall, was hospitalized in Bismarck, then transferred to a nursing home in Mandan, where she passed away.
Shirley is survived by her son, Michael (Karina) Schafer, Spooner, WI, daughter, Jill (Louie) Weigel, Bismarck and daughter-in-law Connie Schafer, Owatonna, MN, grandchildren, Matthew (Chastity), Shaun, Riley and Jade, all Jamestown; Brady (Sarah), Rogers, MN, Tanner, Madison, WI, Jordan, Spooner, WI, Tyler, Ashlynn and Haylee, Owatonna, MN, and step grandson, Wesley Nelson, Owatonna, MN, and great-grandchildren Chloe, Rogers, MN and Gunner, Jamestown, ND, and step grandchild Vienna Nelson, Owatonna, MN.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Duane, sons Scott and Mark, her parents, and a sister, Loretta.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, June 1, 2026 at Atonement Lutheran Church, Jamestown, ND with Pastor Lucinda Lien officiating. Visitation will be one hour before service. Interment will be in Highland Home Cemetery.
