Robert Julius Rein, affectionately known as “Dempsey,” passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, in Pelican Rapids, MN, at the age of 87. His life was marked by kindness, joy, and a deep love for family and community.

Born on January 29, 1939, in Roberts County, SD, to Elvin and Stella Rein, Dempsey shared his childhood with his sisters Sonja Medhaug, Kathy Lee, and Shirley Courneyea. He carried a zest for life that defined him throughout his years.

Dempsey married his beloved wife, Vione, and together they shared 67 years of unwavering devotion. They raised two children, Nikki Rein and Robert S. Rein, and Dempsey’s legacy continues through his grandchildren: Jeni Crowley (Richard), Theron Rein (Rachael), Megan Rein, and Jake Rein (Makayla). He also leaves behind great-grandchildren Ashtyn Crowley and Margot and Roman Rein. His family brought him immense pride and joy.

For over four decades, Dempsey called Valley City, ND home. He became a well-known figure through his career in sales at McCurley Chevrolet and FEI Inc., where his personable nature and ability to connect with others left a lasting impression.

Dempsey embraced life with enthusiasm. He was an avid fisherman and golfer who found peace on the water and joy on the greens. A lover of sports, singing, and reading, he pursued his interests with passion and vitality.

He is survived by his wife Vione; children Nikki Rein and Robert S. Rein; grandchildren Jeni Crowley (Richard), Theron Rein (Rachael), Megan Rein, and Jake Rein (Makayla); great-grandchildren Ashtyn Crowley and Margot and Roman Rein; and sisters Sonja Medhaug and Kathy Lee. Sister-in-Law Diane Schneider, Alison Rein. He was preceded in death by his parents Elvin and Stella Rein and sister Shirley Courneyea.

A memorial service will be held on August 4, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Faith Lutheran Church, 309 4th St NE. Valley City, ND. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
