Joshua “Josh” Jay Fretheim, 31, of Jamestown, ND, formerly of Valley City, passed away unexpectedly on September 8, 2026, in Valley City, ND. A celebration of Josh’s life will be held at 7:00 PM Thursday, September 17th at Traditions Funeral Services Lerud Mathias Funeral Home Chapel in Valley City. Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery near Valley City. Josh was born on October 6, 1994, in Jamestown, North Dakota, to Katie Borge and Erik Fretheim. Josh was funny, stubborn, goofy, kind, loving, and fiercely protective of the people he cared about. He had a big heart and a heart of gold, and he had a way of bringing laughter and light to the people around him. Beneath his stubbornness was someone who cared deeply about others and was always willing to lend a hand. Josh was a hard worker who found meaning in caring for others. His first job was as a CNA in a nursing home, a job he truly loved. He loved the residents, and they loved him right back. Caring for people came naturally to Josh, and his compassion was one of the many qualities that made him special. Outside of work, Josh loved being outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, kayaking, listening to music, watching movies, and spending time doing the things he loved. His beloved dog, Nala, was also an important part of his life and held a special place in his heart. Above all else, Josh loved his daughter, Kianna Fretheim. She was a cherished part of his life and will forever carry his love with her.

Josh is survived by his daughter, Kianna; his parents, Katie Borge and Erik Fretheim and stepmother Bonnie Fretheim; his siblings, Nicolas Fretheim, Haley Sayler, and Samantha Schauer; his beloved dog, Nala; and many extended family members and friends who will deeply miss him.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Anita Smith and Harold “Skip” Fretheim.

Josh’s life touched more people than he may have ever realized. He will be remembered for his goofy sense of humor, stubborn spirit, kindness, loving heart, and the way he cared so deeply for the people and animals in his life. Though his time with us was far too short, the memories he created and the love he gave will remain with those who knew him forever. Rest peacefully, Josh. You were loved, you are missed, and you will never be forgotten.
