Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) —  Patriot Day, Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012 was commemorated in Jamestown at 5:30pm with a program and a Freedom Walk/Parade through downtown Jamestown. The event is sponsored by the Patriotic Council of our community.

Yesterday was the 11th Anniversary of the 9-11 tragedy and a chance for our Jamestown area residents to commemorate and remember the event.

The event was a half mile walk through downtown Jamestown, starting at the All Vets Club, 116 1/2 First Street East.

About 70 individuals participated in the walk.

After the walk, the Vets Club hosted a free spaghetti supper served followed with a short program of remembrance of the 9-11 tragedy and a show of support for our troops and first responders. Police chief Scott Edinger was the speaker.

Chief Edinger, talked about changes in law enforcement since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, including technology, allowing the sharing of information, between local, state and federal agencies.

He said law enforcement has better communication with more access to information in vehicles with high–speed Internet in all cars.

 

Jamestown, ND — The Jamestown Rural Fire Department was called out Tuesday afternoon (Sept 11, 2012) twice within 15 minutes.

The first call came in at about 2:30 p.m., with a one-ton pickup, pulling two horse trailers on fire the two miles east of Jamestown, at the I-94 Bloom Exit 262, on the north side of the highway westbound.

An area of grass was burned on the northside of the interstate, between the ramp and the interstate.

More rural fire units were called out a few minutes later, to a grass fire about two miles south of Jamestown.

No report on that fire was immediately available.

 

Update

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — Jamestown Police investigated a one vehicle accident about 3:30-p.m., Friday (Sept 7, 2012) at Railroad Drive, East, near the intersection of 3rd Street Southeast.

A car rolled off of Railroad Drive East, down a slight embankment, and landed against a building.

The driver escaped from the car, and the City Fire Department returned to the fire hall, after being called for assistance.

The police report said, 24 year old Jenna Vanhorne, of Jamestown was driving thee car, heading southeast attempting to turn around.

As she backed up the car northwestly on Railroad Drive, she lost control, and the front end of the car spun around to the northwest, left the roadway and rolled, striking the steel building with the car coming to a rest on its top.

There was $5,000 in damage to the car, and about $250 in damages to the building.

The report says, Vanhorne was not wearing a seat belt.

She was transported by Jamestown Area Ambulance Service to Jamestown Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

She was cited for driving under the influence of a substance and was taken into custody upon her release from the hospital.

The Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office was also called to the scene, as the cause of the accident remains under investigation.

 

Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Sept 11, 2012) — Following the tragic accident that took the life of pilot Bob Odegaard on Friday (Sept 7, 2012), while practicing for the Valley City Air Show, officials are looking at options, concerning the cancelled show, and any future air show.

Plans for a future Air Show in Valley City are being discussed, and could be held, possibly in another two years.

Barnes County Airport Authority board member, and Air Show organizer, Lori Jury says, says anyone purchasing Air Show tickets should save their tickets.

The Airport Authority board will take several weeks to discuss options available about what to do with those who purchased advance tickets.

Ms. Jury says, at this time no decisions have been made concerning advance tickets or a future show.

Earlier this week, Barnes County Airport Authority Board Chairman Dennis Helland asked anyone with photos of the plane in flight, on the ground or during the crash to give them to Barnes County Airport officials or the Barnes County Sheriff’s office.

Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Spet 11, 2012) — Officials with Shopko announced Tuesday that the liquidation sale has ended and the store conversion process, at the Valley City Paminda to Shopko Hometown begins next week.

During the conversion, the store will remain open and will take five to six weeks to complete.

Each of the store’s three primary departments will be converted, one department at a time, with each department opening to shoppers as soon as it’s completed.

The first department to be converted is Consumables, including health and beauty, over the counter candy, beverages and snacks.

The department will open to the public by September 23rd.

Officials say, new look of Shopko Hometown will include new interior and exterior signage, carpet, paint, updated and supplement fixtures and lighting and a new easy to shop store layout.

Paul Jones, Shopko President, Chairman and CEO, says since the merger with Pamida early this year, 45 Pamida stores have been converted to the Shopko Hometown format.

He adds, “The response from our customers has been overwhelmingly positive and we are thrilled to be just weeks away from introducing this retail concept to Valley City.”

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Sept 12, 2012) — Jamestown College has again received the highest ranking of all North Dakota institutions in U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Colleges 2013” edition.

For the sixth consecutive year, Jamestown College is ranked in the top tier of Best Regional Colleges in the “Best Colleges 2013” rankings released Sept. 12.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Vehicle traffic was kept out of the airport

in North Dakota’s largest city for more than an hour on the

anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks because of a bomb threat.

The incident Tuesday afternoon did not affect flights, but

authorities kept traffic out of Hector International while local

and federal authorities investigated. That was a headache for some arriving passengers looking for taxi rides or hotel vans.

Police Lt. Joel Vettel says authorities were more diligent than usual in their investigation because of the date.

Nothing suspicious was found and no arrests were made.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Bismarck police have arrested a man in an

early morning gas station robbery.

Authorities allege the 21-year-old man walked into the Red

Carpet shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday and demanded cash and

cigarettes.

The suspect had his hand in the pocket of his sweat

shirt, leading the clerk to believe he had a weapon.

The man left with cash and a pack of cigarettes. He was arrested a couple of hours later while walking along a street.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Two men are running independent campaigns
for North Dakota governor this fall.
     Frequent political candidate Roland Riemers (RY’-murs) and
Republican Paul Sorum will be on the ballot as independents, along
with Republican incumbent Jack Dalrymple and Democrat Ryan Taylor.
     Sorum is a Fargo architect. He has unsuccessfully sought the
North Dakota Republican endorsement to run for the U.S. Senate and
governor.
     Sorum opposed Dalrymple’s endorsement at the state GOP
convention last spring. Sorum said at the convention that
Republicans needed to “get behind Jack.”
     Riemers is a Grand Forks resident and longtime political
candidate. He’s run for the U.S. Senate and the North Dakota
Legislature.
     In 2004 the Libertarian Party endorsed Riemers’ independent
candidacy for governor. He even filed to run in North Dakota’s
Democratic presidential primary in 1996.
    

DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – A Dickinson insurance agent accused of

stealing $30,000 from a client has pleaded not guilty to five

felony theft counts.

Authorities allege that Scott Biggs took the money from a

client’s trust account between June 2009 and November 2011 for his own use.

Defense attorney Irv Nodland says the case should be handled as a civil matter and not as a criminal matter, but Judge William Herauf this week ruled there was enough evidence to proceed with the criminal case.

In July, state Insurance Commissioner Adam Hamm ordered Biggs to stop selling insurance in North Dakota.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota lawmakers are supporting two

options for cutting local property taxes.

One proposal will continue giving subsidies to local schools to pay for property tax cuts.

The program has cut the property tax bills of North Dakota homeowners by about 15 percent.

Keeping it going will cost about $400 million over two years.

A second idea would give property tax credits to homeowners.

The proposal knocks $75,000 off the property tax value of a home.

If the homeowner is at least 65 years old, the credit rises to

$125,000.

The Legislature’s interim Taxation Committee voted Tuesday to support the two options.

They’ll both be introduced in the Legislature next year.

Mandan Sen. Dwight Cook says he favors keeping the existing

school subsidy program. He says it’s worked well.

 

MEDORA, N.D. (AP) – Officials at Theodore Roosevelt National

Park are moving into the next phase of an elk management program.

Superintendent Valerie Naylor says the park has finished

reducing what was a bloated elk herd, and now it will monitor and

maintain the population through the use of radio collars.

The National Park Service has contracted with an Idaho company to capture between 17 and 21 elk in the park’s south unit and fit them with the collars. The work is set for today and Thursday.

The elk reduction effort began in 2010, when officials estimated the park herd at more than 1,200 animals. Park staff and hundreds of volunteer shooters in fall 2010 and fall 2011 killed nearly 870 elk to bring the herd to a level the park can sustain.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota State linebacker Travis Beck was

fined $325 and sentenced to 40 hours of community service for an

underage drinking offense.

Last year’s MVP in the Football Championship Subdivision title game will also attend an educational program offered to minors who are charged with consuming alcohol.

 

DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – An 18-year-old football player says North

Dakota State College of Sciences kicked him off the team after

finding out he is gay.

The college in Wahpeton acknowledges Jamie Kuntz was disciplined by the team. But football coach Chuck Parsons told Kuntz in a letter that he was removed for lying.

What Kuntz lied about was a kiss from his from his much-older boyfriend at a game earlier this month.

Kuntz was injured, so he was in the press box at Snow College in Pueblo, Colo. Kuntz was videotaping the game when he says “the kiss just happened.”

When Parsons confronted Kuntz on the bus ride back to North

Dakota, Kuntz lied and told him the man was his grandfather.

Kuntz said he later felt guilty about lying and came clean.

NEW YORK (AP) -Talks aimed at preventing hockey’s fourth work

stoppage since 1992 are scheduled today in New York where the NHL

and the players’ association will meet face to face for the first

time since last Friday. If there is no deal by Saturday, the league

says it will lock out the players.

         UNDATED (AP) – The NFL confirms that Commissioner Roger Goodell
(guh-DEHL’) has agreed to meet with four players whose suspensions
in connection with the bounty investigation were recently lifted by
an appeals panel. No specific dates have been set for the meetings.

     Goodell is reconsidering whether to hand down revised
suspensions to Saints linebacker Jon Vilma, Saints defensive end
Will Smith, Cleveland linebacker Scott Fujita and free agent
defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove.

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama has strongly condemned

the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed

four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens.

In a White House statement, the president calls Stevens “a courageous and exemplary representative of the United States.”

The protesters were angry over a film that ridiculed Islam’s Prophet Muhammad.

 

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Federal Reserve begins a two-day meeting today amid anticipation by investors that action is coming to spur the economy.

It could take the form of a third round of bond

purchases meant to ease long-term interest rates and spur borrowing and spending.

It’s called “quantitative easing” or QE.

 

VIENNA (AP) – Diplomats say a resolution to be put before a

meeting of the 35-nation board of the International Atomic Energy

Agency brings Russia and China on board in criticizing Iran’s

nuclear defiance.

It’s meant to show Israel that diplomacy is an alternative to using force in pressuring Tehran at a time when the Jewish state warns that time is running out for diplomatic efforts.

　

TOKYO (AP) – Japan’s prime minister has hinted that the

government will announce it will eventually abandon nuclear energy when it issues its new energy policy this week.

Yoshihiko Noda also says the new policy would be a “major shift” from Japan’s decades-long pro-nuclear energy policy.

Anti-nuclear sentiment rose after the tsunami and nuclear meltdown.

　

ATHENS, Greece (AP) – Greece’s governing coalition leaders are struggling to finalize further spending cuts for the coming two years amid a fresh wave of anti-austerity strikes.

Meanwhile, Germany’s high court has rejected calls to block Europe’s permanent rescue fund – paving the way for its ratification by the country’s president.
