FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota State University officials who helped build up the school’s athletic program are calling the upset victory over Oklahoma in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament the signature win for all sports.
The No. 12-seeded Bison knocked off the No. 5 Sooners 80-75 in overtime Thursday. It’s the first tournament victory for NDSU, which is participating in its sixth year as a Division I program.
NDSU athletic director Gene Taylor, who was hired to oversee the transition from small college athletics, says the win over Oklahoma came on bigger stage than the school’s surprising football victory over Kansas State last fall.
The Bison have won three straight Football Championship Subdivision titles under Taylor, who says the key to success is “hiring the right people and getting out of the way.”
