Valley City (VCSU, CSi) Margaret Dahlberg, Ph.D., vice president for academic affairs at Valley City State University, has been appointed interim president of VCSU by the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education.
Dahlberg will begin serving as VCSU interim president on July 1, 2014. She will succeed VCSU’s current president, Steven W. Shirley, who has been appointed president of Minot State University.
Dahlberg has served on the VCSU faculty since 1996. Formerly professor of English and chair of the communication arts department, she was appointed interim vice president for academic affairs in April 2009. In January 2010 she was named vice president for academic affairs.
She holds a B.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin–Platteville and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of North Dakota.
A native of Valley City, Dahlberg has lived in Valley City for a total of 24 years, 6 years as a child and 18 years as a VCSU employee.
Her academic efforts at VCSU actually began when the university was named Valley City State Teachers College; she attended its Model School while her father, H.O. Pearce, served as its superintendent.
Dahlberg serves on the Mercy Hospital Board of Directors; she is also a board member and secretary of the Barnes County Library Board.
She is married to Paul Dahlberg; the couple has three adult sons, who all attended VCSU.

If approved, Dahlberg will succeed former president Steven Shirley, who will take over as president at Minot State University in July.
Dahlberg has served as vice president for academic affairs for VCSU since 2009 and has taught English at the school since 1996. She received her doctorate in English from the University of North Dakota in 1996.
The board named a Valley City State search committee in April. Dahlberg must be approved by the full board.
