— North Dakota health officials say there were 34 new cases of the coronavirus out of 1,650 tests that were processed at the state laboratory in the last day. Sunday’s update increased the total number of positive tests to 109,976 since the start of the pandemic. Johns Hopkins University researchers say one in every 1,299 people in North Dakota tested positive in the past week. The number of fatalities remained unchanged at 1,457, which researchers say is the 11th highest per capita in the country at about 196 deaths per 100,000 people.

Bismarck NDDoH. – On January 8, the North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) Public Health Laboratory identified a software malfunction on a piece of laboratory equipment. The software malfunction was limited to one platform and affected a total of 641 positive COVID-19 results of 102,562 resulted on the machine between Nov. 7, 2020 and Jan. 8, 2021. The issue has been resolved; the results will be considered inconclusive and the individuals have been notified of the error.
“Laboratorians originally discovered a software issue internal to the equipment after seeing a discrepancy in the results after doing further data analysis on a different platform,” said Dr. Christie Massen, Chief Laboratory Officer for the NDDoH. “Thank you to the hard-working staff at the lab for manually going through every result on the platform to ensure the results were correct.”
Although the issue has been resolved, laboratorians continue to manually review all raw data before the results are released. In addition, the laboratory has increased the frequency of their routine maintenance and software verification.
“While these lab issues are rare, we are committed to transparency to the public and the individuals we serve,” said Massen. “We take these malfunctions seriously and work to quickly identify and resolve the issues.”
The NDDoH Public Health Lab has analyzed over 1 million samples since the pandemic began in March 2020.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota health officials say they have seen another day of low rates of positive COVID-19 cases and virus-related hospitalizations. The news comes as all counties moved to a “low” risk on the state’s five-level risk model, which means some restrictions can be loosened. Among them, bars and restaurants can now be filled up to 80% capacity and have up to 300 customers, with social distancing and masks strongly recommended or required. Health officials reported 153 new COVID-19 cases on Friday and two new deaths. In all, more than 97,000 people have been infected with COVID-19 in North Dakota and 1,419 have died since the pandemic began.

North Dakota health officials are reporting a dramatic drop in hospitalizations because of the coronavirus, due mostly to finding and fixing a computer glitch. The state Department of Health said Wednesday that the adjustment was made after officials resolved a problem with the flow of data in the last week from caseworkers to the state’s reporting system. The result was a drop from 88 hospitalizations to 55. The last time hospitalizations were that low was late August. The state’s hospital tracker shows there are 48 staffed intensive care unit beds and 381 staffed inpatient beds available in North Dakota
