VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) – Valley City Mayor Bob Werkhoven has resigned.
The 85-year-old Werkhoven said in a radio interview Thursday morning that recent health issues prompted him to step down from the office he’s held since 2010.
Four city employees earlier this year filed a grievance against Werkhoven for allegedly creating a hostile work environment. He denied the allegations by City Administrator David Schelkoph, Police Chief Fred Thompson, Police Lt. David Swenson and City Attorney Russ Myhre.
Werkhoven says the dispute had nothing to do with his decision to resign Thursday.
Jamestown (Csi) The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports a Jamestown man died Wednesday afternoon when the motorcycle he was driving was rear-ended north of Jamestown. The crash happened at 2:45 p.m. on U.S. Highway 52, at mile marker 260.5.
The report says a 2006 Chevrolet Suburban driven by a male from New Rockford and the 2008 Harley Davidson were both in the right southbound lane on the highway. The Suburban approached the slower motorcycle from the rear and rear-ended the Harley.
The collision caused the Harley to roll, and the driver was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Suburban was not injured.
Names and ages of the drivers were not immediately released.
The crash is under investigation.
Jamestown (CSi) – On May 14, 2016 the State Historical Society of North Dakota and the 1883 Courthouse Committee will be opening the doors to the historic structure.
On Wednesday’s Wayne Byers Show, on CSi Cable 2, North Dakota State Historical Society, Sites Manager, Guinn Hinman said, the 1883 Stutsman County Courthouse will be open for the public to see the progress made on the restoration, since the last open house in 2014. The open house will be held from 1 to 4 p.m.
There will be a separate, private reception Friday for the family and friends of Mary Young to dedicate the clerk of court office in the historic courthouse in honor of Young.
Mike Williams, a member of the 1883 Courthouse Committee, said getting the clerk’s office named in honor of Young was very important to the committee.
The courthouse, located at 503 3rd Avenue SE in Jamestown, is the oldest in the state and has been undergoing a massive rehabilitation effort in the past few years. Recent updates include the complete restoration of the historic clerk of court, auditor, and sheriff’s offices as well as an electrical overhaul and the installation of new restrooms.
Future plans include restoration of the second floor, including the courtroom, and installation of an elevator.
She pointed out that the courthouse’s restoration began about 30 years ago, as the late Mary Young and others formed a “Save The Courthouse Committee,” to save the historic structure from the wrecking ball, with the space planned for a parking lot.
The initial restoration was the exterior of the building.
She hopes the complete restoration will be accomplished by the summer of 2017, and open for public meetings, and gatherings.
The North Dakota legislature in 2015 allocated $350,000 toward the restoration project, with the local committee in the process of fundraising with the goal of $75,000. Anyone wishing to make a donation may contact Barb Lang in Jamestown, or any 1883 Stutsman County Courthouse Committee member.
The Stutsman County Courthouse was the location for meetings in the 1880s movement toward the creation of the state of North Dakota, and it remains the only building in North and South Dakota from the statehood movement. Notable for the pressed tin that adorns the walls and ceilings throughout the building, the courthouse is an architectural gem in the heart of Jamestown.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A New Town woman accused of dozens of felonies stemming from two burglary sprees in Williston has been sentenced to serve seven years in prison.
Authorities arrested Brittany Foote in August 2014 and linked her to a lengthy series of break-ins, eventually charging her with 34 felonies.
The list included theft, burglary and drug allegations for stealing cash, credit cards and other valuables from homes and vehicles across Williston during two separate strings of summertime break-ins.
Foote was sentenced this week and given credit for about 1 1/2 years she’s already spent behind bars.
Defense attorney Monty Mertz called the sentence “fair.”
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A man who left behind several clues for police investigating a bank robbery in Minot says he will plead guilty to the holdup.
Charles Norton is charged in federal court with bank robbery. Authorities say he held up a US Bank shortly before noon on Jan. 21.
Investigators say Norton donned his distinct purple-framed glasses during the robbery, left pieces of the note demanding money behind in his hotel room and mumbled under his breath about the theft in front of a social worker handling his son’s foster care.
The plea agreement filed Tuesday in federal court says Norton used some of the money to buy marijuana and gave some of it to friends and relatives.
The charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A Williston man accused of having sexual contact with a girl twice in a span of two years has been sentenced to serve five years in prison.
24-year-old Justan Oppegaard reached a plea deal with prosecutors on a felony gross sexual imposition charge that could have landed him in prison for life. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison with half of the time suspended.
Authorities say the victim was 12 years old when the first assault happened in 2014. Oppegaard pleaded guilty to felony corruption of a minor and was given a one-year suspended sentence. He was arrested again last September for sexually assaulting the girl, who by then was 14.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Board of Animal Health is reminding horse owners to protect their animals from equine herpesvirus.
The disease is better known as EHV-1. State Veterinarian Susan Keller says cases have been identified in several states in recent months.
With summer coming, many horse owners will be moving animals to events around the region. Keller says care should be taken to minimize the chances of a horse getting the disease.
EHV-1 can be spread through the air, contaminated equipment, clothing and hands. Keller says protective measures include avoiding sharing food and water containers and preventing nose-to-nose horse contact. Vaccines are available for some forms of the disease.
Out-of-state horses entering North Dakota for any length of time must be accompanied by a health certificate.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – U.S. presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders has scheduled a second campaign event in North Dakota.
The Democratic senator from Vermont will hold a rally in Bismarck Friday night, after appearing in Fargo earlier in the day.
Doors open at 11 a.m. at the Ramada Fargo Convention Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. at the Bismarck Depot.
Sanders is competing with Hillary Clinton for the Democratic endorsement. Whoever gets it likely will run against presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Sanders held rallies in Montana on Wednesday and had three events scheduled in South Dakota today.
SIOUX FALLS, N.D. (AP) – Former President Bill Clinton is planning a trip to South Dakota and North Dakota to campaign for his wife, Hillary Clinton.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is competing with Hillary Clinton for the Democratic endorsement, has scheduled a campaign stops in South Dakota on Thursday and North Dakota on Friday.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Officials say more than 1,800 bags of trash were picked up by hundreds of volunteers along the major north-south highway corridor in North Dakota’s oil patch.
The cleanup of U.S. Highway 85 from Bowman to Williston occurred last week.
State Department of Transportation district engineer Larry Gangl says the 169-mile stretch of the oil patch highway needed some special attention because of the large traffic volume and the amount of debris that blows off trucks.
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – Officials with a U.S. Justice Department division are scheduled to conduct a review of the regional jail in Devils Lake this week.
Lake Region Law Enforcement Center Director Tom Rime says the review is to take two days and should give the center’s board some useful feedback.
The jail has had a slew of problems in recent years including guard misconduct, staffing issues and inmate escapes.
Rime says the visit by the National Institute of Corrections officials was scheduled at his request nearly a year ago and isn’t in response to two recent escapes.
He says the review should “provide a roadmap moving forward for this facility.”
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot has named a new airport director.
City officials say that Rick Feltner will take over the position on May 23. He previously served a deputy executive director of Terminal One at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.
Feltner, a native of Lakeville, Minnesota, also worked as corporate director of airport services for Delta Air Lines in Minneapolis.
The Minot airport opened a new $43 million terminal in February. It has six gates, four jet bridges, state-of-the-art monitors and boarding areas, a sports bar-style restaurant and a play area for children.

Superbowl…Minneapolis…
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The date has been set for the 2018 NFL Super Bowl to be played in Minneapolis.
The Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee says the NFL has scheduled the 2018 game for February 4th at the U.S. Bank Stadium, which is currently under construction. The stadium is due to be completed in time for the upcoming Minnesota Vikings season.
Minneapolis was awarded Super Bowl 52 in 2014. The host committee says the announcement of a date on Wednesday officially starts its countdown to the 2018 game when more than 1 million people are expected to visit the Twin Cities during 10 days of Super Bowl activities.
Super Bowl 51 is scheduled for February 5th, 2017, in Houston.

President Eric Kaler announced the selection of Coyle, who has been at Syracuse for the past year. The 47-year-old was visiting campus Wednesday for a formal interview with the search committee and meetings with coaches and officials.

UNDATED (AP) – Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper is appealing the one-game suspension he received Wednesday from Major League Baseball for his behavior following an ejection this week.
Harper remains eligible to play until the process is finished. He was punished for running back onto the field to celebrate with teammates and curse out the umpire who ejected him for arguing a called third strike from the dugout. Players are required to leave the dugout following an ejection.
NASCAR..
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Kyle Busch’s crew chief has been suspended by NASCAR for one race for violating the lug nut policy during the team’s win at Kansas last weekend. Adam Stevens was also fined $20,000 and placed on probation through the end of the year, while front tire changer Josh Leslie is on probation until Dec. 31.
Lug nuts have been an issue in NASCAR since the series stopped policing whether teams were applying all five on each tire during pit stops. By using less than five, a team would have a faster pit stop and gain track position.
In world and national news….
WASHINGTON (AP) – Donald Trump meets with leading Capitol Hill Republicans who haven’t been giving him their full support. One meeting will be with House Speaker Paul Ryan, who said last week that he couldn’t back the presumptive GOP presidential nominee right now.
BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) – Just months before the Summer Olympics, Brazil’s political crisis is deepening. President Dilma Rousseff has been suspended for up to six months while the Senate tries her for allegedly using accounting tricks to hide large budget deficits. Lawmakers impeached Rousseff today. The trial will determine whether she can serve out her second term or whether her vice president will take her place through December 2018.
GENEVA (AP) – The World Health Organization says 98 percent of people living in large cities of low- and middle-income countries are facing excessively high air pollution. WHO has released new information from its Global Urban Ambient Air Pollution Database, which covers 3,000 cities in 103 countries and is based partly on country reports. It says global urban air pollution levels rose 8 percent “despite improvements in some regions,” and that residents face higher risk of strokes, heart disease, lung cancer and respiratory diseases as air quality worsens.
WASHINGTON (AP) – What’s happening to the American middle-class? A new report by the Pew Research Center says that in 2014, a family of three with a household income of $42,000 to $125,000 a year was considered middle class. But the report says the middle class is shrinking because some earners in major metro areas are either moving to higher- or lower-income groups. That leaves fewer folks in the middle.
NEW YORK (AP) – Morning talk show host Kelly Ripa says her partner Michael Strahan’s exit from “Live with Kelly and Michael” was moved up from the date originally planned. It was announced last month that Strahan would leave the show in September and join ABC’s “Good Morning America” full-time. But Ripa was unhappy about how the news was communicated, and she took a few days off. Now Strahan’s last day is tomorrow. Ripa tells “People” magazine that that search for Strahan’s replacement needs to get underway before the show’s upcoming summer hiatus.
