FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fargo police are investigating an armed robbery at a convenience store.

Authorities say a man with a handgun walked into the Stop-N-Go store shortly after 7:30 p.m. Sunday and demanded money from a female clerk. The man fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

Neither the clerk nor the two customers in the store at the time were hurt.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – A 30-year-old Bismarck man was accidentally shot by his friend during an altercation that police say might have been the result of road rage.

The accident happened early Saturday in north Mandan. Police say the victim and his friend, a 27-year-old man, were arguing with other people outside a residence after an earlier altercation at a gas station.

Police say the 27-year-old man removed a small-caliber rifle from a vehicle and it accidentally went off, striking the 30-year-old man in the thigh. The victim’s condition is unknown.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Police are investigating a series of break-ins at Grand Forks restaurants.

Four restaurants were reportedly burglarized between Friday night and Saturday morning.

The first call came from a Subway restaurant at 6:30 a.m. Saturday. That was followed by reports from the Great Wall Buffet, Panda Buffet and China Garden.

Authorities say doors to the restaurants were forced open. It’s not known how much money was taken.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says compliance with state and federal pesticide laws and regulations is at an all-time high in North Dakota.

Goehring says state officials conducted a record 1,042 inspections of farms and businesses last year and more than 840 were found to be in compliance, for a rate of 81 percent. The previous record was 80 percent in 2008.

Goehring says his department’s outreach and compliance assistance program is a big reason. He says the department’s pesticide team reached more than 4,400 people last year through public meetings and other efforts.

The findings are included in an annual report the state submits to the federal Environmental Protection Agency.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – An economic development group wants to open a custom slaughter plant in northeastern North Dakota.

Officials with the Red River Regional Council say the plant would provide a market for locally raised cattle and hogs, as well as deer and other wild game.

Plans are to process 10 to 15 animals per week and employ five people.

Officials are looking in Pembina or Walsh counties for a possible site.

Jerry Sauter, spokesman for the state Agriculture Department, says  there’s a need for more slaughter plants throughout North Dakota.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The U.S. Department of Labor says North Dakota recorded a record 44 work-related deaths in 2011.

The agency says that was up from 30 work-related deaths in 2010.

Officials say it was the largest over-the-year increase since the series began in 1992.

Fatal occupational injuries in the state were at the lowest level in 1992, when 20 deaths were reported.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – It didn’t take long for North Dakota’s freshman senator to make her debut on the Sunday morning talk show circuit.

Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp appeared Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” with Candy Crowley, along with North Carolina Republican Rep. Richard Hudson, a first-year congressman.

The two lawmakers talked about their first impressions of serving in Congress and debates over the debt ceiling and guns. Asked about possible gun control measures, Heitkamp said the issue needs a balanced approach “and then we need to live in reality.”

Heitkamp said she is frustrated because it seems like she has a “greater sense of urgency” than others in Congress. She said she hopes lawmakers can start the session with “a new sense of cooperation, collaboration, and getting the job done.”

Heikamp also appeared on ABC’s “This Week,” show, on Sunday.
