Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Regional Airport has received word of approval of an agreement for the next two years with SkyWest to continue service to Jamestown.
Airport Authority Chairman, Jim Boyd received word during the City Council committee meeting and passed along the good news at the close of the meeting.
Boyd thanked the community’s support for requesting that SkyWest in conjunction with United Express continue as the designated airline, under the Essential Air Service program, for the next two years.
Great Lakes Airlines also submitted a bid.
Boyd said UnitedExpress will provide additional air service on Saturdays.
Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Council’s Finance & Legal, Building, Planning and Zoning, and Civic Center and Promotions Committees met Tuesday evening at City Hall. All members were present.
FINANCE & LEGAL COMMITTEE
The committee reviewed other community’s substandard housing ordinances and take such action as may seem warranted.
The committee recommends forming an ad hoc committee to review and perform any possible updates. The committee is expected to consist of representatives of the city council, police department, building and inspection department, and fire department
Council Members Buchanan and Brubakken will represent the City Council.
The committee recommends approval of the “Corrected Final Special Assessments” for District #14-41, #14-61 & #14- 31 showing the proper developer’s fee credits for Lots 3 thru 7, Block 2, McElroy Addition. The correction will change the total for the individual lots.
The committee then considered the appeal from Carol Wiest, 1714 6th Avenue NE, for a 6 foot variance to the 25 foot front yard setback requirement for buildings which has previously been denied by the Board of Adjustments. Carol Wiest is looking to build an entryway.
Board of Adjustments Chairman Darrell Losing said the denial was based on the structure not “in line,” with other houses on that side of the block. He said homeowners on the north and south side of the property had no comment.
Council Member Buchanan said he failed to see the harm in the variance.
The committee recommends approving the appeal and granting the variance.
The committee recommends approving the request from the Corner Bar for a permit to conduct a street dance on 2nd Street SW, on Saturday June 11, 2016.
The committee considered the request to purchase a portion of City right-of-way east of 1010 19th St. NE.
The committee recommends denial.

The Second Reading of Ordinance No. 1474 granting a franchise to Cable Services, Inc, is scheduled for the June 6, 2016, City Council Meeting.
The Second Reading of Ordinance No. 1476 granting a franchise to Daktel Communications, LLC, is scheduled for the June 6, 2016, City Council Meeting.
The appointment of Abbigail C. Geroux as Assistant City Prosecutor and Assistant City Attorney is scheduled for the June 6, 2016, City Council meeting.
Considered the request from Joel Onsurez for Renaissance Zone approval for improvements of the property at 104 3rd Street SE (Lot 1 and North 49.7’ of Lot 2, Block 46, Klaus Addition) the former Masonic Lodge, and to provide for a five (5) year property tax exemption and to recommend the State grant a five (5) year ND State Income Tax exemption. The request was moved to the Council, pending the completion of the application.
The committee considered a loan to Jamestown Regional Airport for up to 50% of $126,000 for five (5) years for the purchase of a Jetway (passenger-boarding bridge).
City Administrator said the city dollars would come from the city’s Special Assessment Deficiency Fund
Airport Authority Chairman Jim Boyd said the airport’s share of the cost will come from a taxiway project that will not take place. He said it’s hoped that the State Aeronautics Commission will cover 70 percent.
The airport is purchasing the used jetway from Minot’s airport, and a significant reduction in costs of either a new, or refurbished unit.
The committee recommends approval of the request.
The committee recommends participation as the authorizing unit of government to make application on behalf of Jamestown Regional Medical Center for a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) Program Grant in the amount of $12,785.00.

Jamestown (CSi) Mike Williams, the owner of Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, was presented with the North Dakota Highway Patrol’s, Colonel’s Award for Excellence. Williams was nominated for this honor by Lt. Dan Haugen, coordinator of the NDHP’s Honor Guard. Williams allowed the honor guard to use his facilities and equipment several times to practice conducting funeral ceremonies. Williams also donated a casket, painted Highway Patrol brown, to the honor guard to use for training.
Lt. Haugan says, “Without Mr. Williams’ support of our team, we wouldn’t have been able to conduct realistic training and would not be the team we have grown into today. The NDHP Honor Guard serves at funerals of retired highway patrolmen and other law enforcement officers who die in the line of duty.
The Colonel’s Award for Excellence is given to NDHP employees or citizens who are nominated by any NDHP employee to recognize exceptional efforts in serving the citizens of North Dakota.
Jamestown (CSi) Stutsman County 4-Hers are planning events and activities before and during the Stutsman County Fair.
On Tuesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Robin Barnes from the NDSU Extension Service, Stutsman County office, pointed out that on June 1st, 4-Hers begin submitting their plans for displays at the fair, and will hold a fashion show with clothing they have made and will model. The event will take place at Ave Maria Village in Jamestown.
On June 15,2016 the Equestrian Clinic will be held from 10-a.m. to 3-p.m.,
at the Dale 7 Sue Karn Farm in Wimbledon, where Kayla Krueger of the University of Crookson, Minnesota will gave a presentation for those preparing their horses and themselves for the show ring.
4Hers will participate in the Showmanship Clinic on June 17, 2016 from 9-a.m. to 3-p.m., at the Stutsman County Fairgrounds, with two separate clinics.
A Fair event is the Old Timer’s Showmanship Contest, on Friday July 1, 2016, following the Market Livestock Premium Sale. Contestants pay a $10 donation/entry fee, with the proceeds going to the Stutsman County 4-H Livestock Committee.
Saturday July 2nd marks the return of “Who’s got the fastest wiener Dog? contest, at the Stutsman County Fairgrounds.
The contest is open to the entire community, with a $5 entry fee going toward the 4-H program. The sign up starts at 4-p.m., in the Livestock Arena.
Dogs must be leashed, and must show the rabies certificate/tag to participate.
The Rabbit Breeders Show is also that day.

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Patriotic Council will sponsor Memorial Day Activities on Monday, beginning with a program at 9 a.m. at the Knights of Columbus.
After the program a wreath will be lowered into the river at Nickeus Park bridge followed by the sounding of taps and a rifle salute honoring Navy veterans who gave their lives during military service and were buried at sea.
Following the ceremony each of the cemeteries in Jamestown will be visited by a veterans organization that will lower the flag to the half-staff, and a wreath will be placed at the base of the flagpole. Taps will be sounded and closed with a benediction.
After the ceremonies at the cemeteries are finished, everyone is invited to gather at the All Vets Club for a light, freewill lunch to honor the Jamestown Drum & Bugle Corps and thank them for 55 years of service to the community.
Everyone is invited to participate in honoring veterans who gave their lives for their country and all veterans who have served and to celebrate the Jamestown Drum & Bugle Corps.
Streeter Memorial Day program is Monday
The Streeter Memorial Day Program will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Memorial Hall in Streeter.
North Dakota American Legion Cmdr. Harold “Bud” Goldsmith of Streeter will be the guest speaker. The event will also feature music, patriotic readings, a demonstration on the correct way to fold the American flag and the POW/MIA Empty Chair Remembrance Ceremony.
A free barbecue lunch at the hall will follow the cemetery service. The program is sponsored by Streeter American Legion and Auxiliary.
Kensal to hold Memorial Day observance
Memorial Day services will be held in Kensal at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the school gym. John Florhaug Post #103 American Legion will be hosting the event. Guest speaker will be 4th District Vice Commander Roger Parsons. The Sons of the American Legion Squadron #103 will be paying tribute to deceased veterans at both the city cemetery and the Catholic cemetery following the service. A meal will be served at St. John’s Catholic Church following the service.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – An employee at a Bismarck gas station suffered a knife wound on a hand while trying to stop a robbery.
Police say a man walked into a Superpumper station Monday evening and asked to look at knives inside a case at the counter. Holding a knife, he then allegedly ordered two clerks to open the cash register.
Authorities say the suspect scuffled with the clerks when he went behind the counter to try to open the register himself, cutting one of them on the hand. The man then fled with some unpaid items.
Twenty-six-year-old suspect John St. Claire faces two felonies that together carry a potential maximum punishment of 25 years in prison. Court documents don’t list an attorney for him, and a home telephone listing couldn’t be found.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A man who pleaded guilty to a federal hate crime for firebombing a Somali restaurant in Grand Forks is asking to be released to his parents or a halfway house before his sentencing hearing. Federal authorities say that Matthew Gust, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, targeted the Juba Coffee House because of the nationality of the employees and customers. Gust pleaded guilty to a pair of charges.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fargo city commissioners have approved $15.5 million in tax breaks for developers of a $98 million high-rise complex in the city’s downtown.
The 18-story Block 9 Project planned for what is now a parking lot will include office and retail space, an 88-room hotel, condominiums, a 340-space parking ramp and a renovated city plaza.
The Kilbourne Group founded by philanthropist and Republican governor candidate Doug Burgum is partnering with the R.D. Offutt Company and hotel developer TMI Hospitality. The corporate headquarters for R.D. Offutt and RDO Equipment will be housed in the tower.
The group hopes to start construction in the fall.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – About 100 law officers from a dozen local, state and federal agencies conducted a security sweep at the Cass County Jail in Fargo.
The operation Tuesday night was the largest safety and contraband search ever conducted at the facility. Authorities were looking for drugs, weapons, alcohol and any other items considered a security risk in the jail.
Cass County Sgt. Tim Briggeman says in a statement that the search was done because of an increase in contraband turning up in the jail and a concern about drug use among inmates.
The jail currently houses more than 300 prisoners.
BISMARCK N.D. (AP) – The Bismarck Police Department’s canine officer is getting a protective vest.
Bismarck resident Diana Trussell is sponsoring the bullet- and stab-protective vest for four-legged officer Bala through the Massachusetts-based nonprofit Vested Interest in K9s.
Bala is a 2 1/2-year-old female Belgian Malinois trained in narcotics detection and patrol work. She’ll get her vest in 8-10 weeks.
Vested Interest in K9s has provided more than 1,900 law enforcement dogs in 49 states with protective vests since 2009. They cost $1,050 apiece.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Former University of Oklahoma and Dallas Cowboys football coach Barry Switzer is slated to attend North Dakota’s oil expo and conference in Bismarck.
North Dakota Petroleum Council President Ron Ness says Switzer will attend the event Thursday as a guest of billionaire oilman Harold Hamm, the chairman of Oklahoma City-based Continental Resources Inc.
Hamm has invited sports personalities to the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference and Expo before. In 2012, Tony La Russa, the former St. Louis Cardinals manager who guided the team to the World Series title the year before, attended the event in Bismarck.
This year’s event also will feature former Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz as a key note speaker. The event closes Thursday with an address by Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – The Oklahoma City Thunder are one victory away from their second trip to the NBA Finals, and their first since 2012. The Thunder lead the Western Conference finals 3-1 after Russell Westbrook recorded a triple-double of 36 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in a 118-94 romp over the Warriors. Kevin Durant had 26 points and 11 boards for the Thunder, who have outscored the Warriors by 52 points over the last two games and can wrap up the series against the defending champs on Thursday.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – The Pittsburgh Penguins have forced a seventh game in the NHL’s Eastern Conference finals with last night’s 5-2 win over the Lightning at Tampa. Sidney Crosby and Nick Bonino each had a goal and an assist to support Matt Murray, who made 28 saves in his return to the nets. Brian Boyle scored twice in the third period to make it a 3-2 game before Bryan Rust tallied with 2:08 left to clinch the victory for Pittsburgh.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – The NFL has awarded the 2019 through 2021 Super Bowls to three cities that have significant financial investments in new stadiums or recently upgraded an existing one. Atlanta will host the 2019 game in its soon-to-be completed, $1.4 billion stadium, and Miami gets the 2020 game following its $450 million stadium renovation. Los Angeles will handle the 2021 Super Bowl, to be played at a $2.6 billion facility in nearby Inglewood.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis says the team has received positive support through market research studies concerning a possible move to Las Vegas. Davis has been unable to strike a stadium deal with Oakland officials and wants to relocate the Raiders to Las Vegas, although he’s given no timetable for a potential move. Davis appeared before a Las Vegas stadium commission last month to not only pledge to move the Raiders to the city, but put $500 million into a $1.4 billion stadium.

PARIS (AP) – Second-round play begins during Day 4 of the French Open. Men’s second seed Andy Murray and No. 3 Stan Wawrinka (vah-VRIN’-kuh) are part of Wednesday’s schedule, as is women’s fourth seed Garbine Muguruza (gahr-BEE’-nuh muh-guh-ROO’-thuh).
Tuesday was uneventful for most of the prominent seeds at Roland Garros. Top-seed Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) advanced in three sets and was followed into the second round by Murray and nine-time champ Rafael Nadal (rah-fay-EHL’ nah-DAHL’). Nadal now has a 71-2 record in the tournament.
No. 15 seed John Isner (IHZ’-nur) used 40 aces to move into the second round with a four-set win.
Women’s top-seed Serena Williams breezed into the second round along with fellow American Madison Keys.

NEW YORK (AP) – Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist will not run in the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the horse racing Triple Crown. Trainer Doug O’Neill says the horse has a fever and elevated white blood cell count.
Nyquist saw his unbeaten record come to an end in the Preakness Stakes Saturday, which was won by Exaggerator.

NEW YORK (AP) – The pay gap between the average worker and the company CEO just got even bigger. A study by executive data firm Equilar for The Associated Press finds that CEOs at the biggest companies got a 4.5 percent pay raise last year. That’s almost double the typical American worker’s. The raise alone for median CEO pay last year, $468,449, is more than 10 times what the typical U.S. worker makes in a year.
WASHINGTON (AP) – The House Homeland Security Committee is looking for answers today to the long lines at airport security. Lawmakers are calling the head of the Transportation Security Administration to Capitol Hill for some pointed questions. TSA Administrator Peter Neffenger is also likely to be pressed by members to explain exactly what prompted the ouster of the agency’s top security official, Kelly Hoggan.
DODGE CITY, Kan. (AP) – Western and south-central parts of Kansas are assessing the damage after severe storms across the Plains downed trees and power lines and damaged rural homes and outbuildings. At least two people were critically injured. Tornadoes were reported in several counties. In Oklahoma, the Highway Patrol says one person drowned about 50 miles northeast of Oklahoma City when a vehicle was swept into a drainage culvert. Forecasters say the severe weather could linger.
BRUSSELS (AP) – The European Union is taking the wraps off proposals to spur cross-border e-commerce and improve consumer protection on the internet. EU consumer affairs commissioner, Vera Jourova says the rules combat geo-blocking, which can result in online shoppers being rerouted to a country-specific platform when they try to buy abroad. On-demand video providers would be forced to offer at least a 20 percent share of European-made content. New tools would also better protect minors from dangerous content.
PHOENIX (AP) – Arizona authorities say a suspect is in custody this morning after bullets flew near a northeast Phoenix-area highway. One motorist was hit, another was wounded in a carjacking and a patrol cruiser was struck by a bullet. No details of the arrest were immediately available.
