CARRINGTON, N.D. (AP) – Foster County is again seeking a state’s attorney after the lawyer serving in the post on a temporary basis resigned.
Ashley Lies of New Rockford says she can no longer continue serving in the position because she’s getting caught in the crossfire between supporters and opponents of former state’s attorney Paul Murphy.
Murphy stepped down in January. The County Commission says he was asked to resign because of bad legal advice, but Murphy says he quit due to a number of professional and personal reasons. Murphy recently announced he is again seeking election to the position.
Lies says she believes statements being made by both sides in recent letters to the editor and newspaper advertisements are inappropriate to some extent.
Carrington (CSi) At a Special Election, voters in the Carrington School District approved building a new elementary school by more than the required 60% to pass.
Unofficial results from school bond question number One: Yes 823, 64% No 468, 36% Total votes 1293.
Unofficial results from question Two: Yes 793, 61% No 497 39% Total Votes 1293. Vote passed. Under North Dakota law 60 percent or more is need to pass a school bond issue.
Superintendent Brian Duchscherer saysthe new project has cut some items and will cost a bit less than the first project proposal.
The proposal was scaled back from a $23.5 million project that failed when it got only 51 percent approval in a February election.
Jamestown (CSi) The North Dakota Highway Patrol will hold alcohol saturation patrols to the southeast region this weekend.
Troopers will conduct patrols this Friday and Saturday, May 27, 28, 2016, in Cass, Barnes, and Stutsman counties.
In 2016, nearly half of all North Dakota traffic fatalities were alcohol related.
The Highway Patrol uses the saturation patrols to deter drinking and driving, reducing the occurrence of alcohol-related crashes, injuries, and deaths.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple says the state’s unprecedented oil boom is far from going bust.
Dalrymple told an audience of several hundred at the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference and Expo in Bismarck that the oil industry is “as solid as solid can be.”
State Mineral Resources Director Lynn Helms says there are about 11,000 Bakken wells that have been drilled, and another 31,000 that are planned or permitted. Helms says a total of 65,000 wells are likely to come on line within the next 20 years.
North Dakota sweet crude was fetching about $50 a barrel on Wednesday. That’s about twice that of a low a few months ago.
Whiting Petroleum CEO James Volker says the Bakken will be “cruising” at prices above $60 a barrel.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Police in Bismarck are dedicating about a quarter of their force for security when Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump comes to town.
Sgt. Mark Buschena says about 30 officers will be assigned to the event Thursday at the Bismarck Civic Center. Trump is keynoting the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference and Expo, with about 7,000 people are expected to attend.
Buschena says it’s the most officers Bismarck has dedicated to an event. Another 45 law officers from other local jurisdictions will help out.
Some Trump events this campaign have been marred by clashes between his supporters and protesters. A rally Tuesday in Albuquerque turned violent as anti-Trump protesters clashed with police.
Organizers say some protesters may attend the event but they don’t anticipate problems.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Williston-based oil field service company will pay $250,000 to settle a discrimination and retaliation lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
The lawsuit alleged that a white manager for American Casing & Equipment harassed a worker of Filipino heritage, directing racial slurs at him and on one occasion urinating on the man’s leg.
The EEOC said the harassment occurred from November 2012 to January 2014 and that a supervisor made no attempt to stop it. The agency said Clark was fired when he complained to the company’s safety manager.
Under the settlement in federal court, American Casing and Equipment will pay $250,000 to the man and train all employees on the federal law prohibiting racial discrimination and retaliation.
The Associated Press requested comment from the company’s attorney.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – About 100 law officers from a dozen local, state and federal agencies conducted a security sweep at the Cass County Jail in Fargo.
The operation Tuesday night was the largest safety and contraband search ever conducted at the facility. Authorities were looking for drugs, weapons, alcohol and any other items considered a security risk in the jail.
Cass County Sgt. Tim Briggeman says in a statement that the search was done because of an increase in contraband turning up in the jail and a concern about drug use among inmates.
Briggeman says authorities found two makeshift knives during the sweep. The state’s attorney’s office will be asked to consider charges against the inmates linked to the weapons.
The jail currently houses more than 300 prisoners.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – An energy production tax-supported program that provides grants to conservation projects in North Dakota is doling out about $1.1 million in the latest round of grant funding.
It’s the smallest amount awarded since the 2013 Legislature created the Outdoor Heritage Fund.
Previous grant rounds have involved amounts of at least $2.5 million. The advisory board that makes funding recommendations to the state Industrial Commission implemented a $1.5 million limit for the latest grant round due to the slumping oil industry.
The fund gets a percentage of oil and gas production taxes. It’s getting less than half the money initially expected during the current two-year budget cycle.
The fund’s goal is to restore land affected by energy production, and develop wildlife habitat and outdoor recreation areas.
In sports…
Jamestown (CSi) The University of Jamestown athletics has applied for admittance to the Great Plains Athletic Conference. If accepted the Jimmies would compete in the GPAC in 2017.
The GPAC is widely considered one of the strongest conferences in the country, especially in basketball. The programs in the conference come from Iowa, South Dakota, and Nebraska.
University of Jamestown President, Bob Badal says, “Several years ago the DAC Conference was dissolved and we spent time as an independent looking for the right fit. GPAC was the most suitable choice for us, but the timing wasn’t good for either side. We now feel confident that we are ready to apply to the GPAC and we are actively engaged in the process. It is a strong conference of faith based private schools like UJ, and I believe that it is a solid fit for us.”
Sports sponsored by the conference include; baseball, softball, cross country, basketball, football, soccer, golf, tennis, volleyball, and men’s wrestling.
The Jimmies do not have tennis, but a move would give their soccer teams a much needed home.
Jamestown has been a member of the North Star Athletic Association since its inception in 2013.
In world and national news….
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Texas and 10 other states are suing the Obama administration over a new directive about transgender students in public schools. The challenge follows a federal directive to U.S. schools this month to let transgender students use the bathrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity. The lawsuit accuses the Obama administration of “running roughshod over commonsense policies” that protect children. It asks a judge to declare the directive unlawful.
WASHINGTON (AP) – Hillary Clinton’s opponents say an independent audit shows that she hasn’t been truthful about her use of private email. And they say it’s fresh evidence that she’s not trustworthy or qualified to be commander in chief. The review by an inspector general says Clinton and her team ignored clear guidance from the State Department that her email setup broke federal standards, and that it could leave sensitive material vulnerable to hackers. But a Clinton spokesman says the audit shows that Clinton’s email practices were consistent with what others at the department have done.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Several family members of the nine people who were gunned down at a historic black church in South Carolina say they support decisions by state and federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty for the man charged in the killings. Steve Hurd, whose wife, Cynthia, was among those killed last June, says he won’t be at peace until Dylann Roof is put to death. And he says he would only get “full closure” if he were to be the one to administer the lethal injection, or pull the switch on the electric chair.
NEW YORK (AP) – The New England Patriots are asking a federal appeals court in New York to re-hear the “Deflategate” case. The team says it has a “strong interest” in sparing quarterback Tom Brady from starting the season with a four-game suspension. The court papers also say the Patriots “strongly believe” that nobody tampered with footballs at last year’s AFC Championship game.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – A Utah repossession agent has been charged with manslaughter after prosecutors said he forced a mother from a road in her SUV while trying to take back the vehicle. Prosecutors say Kenneth Drew went to the home of Ashleigh Best last week, late at night, after she fell behind on title loan payments. They say Best drove away in the SUV and Drew chased her in a tow truck with his girlfrie nd. Best, who has two children, crashed into a tree and died.
