Update…

Valley City (CSi) The Valley City Commission met Wednesday morning at 8:30 in Special Session at City Hall.

Commissioner Luke, was not present.

Commissioners approved receiving a petition for a Special Election for the mayor vacancy, and setting a Special Election date.

A group led by Janis Clark Klein successfully gathered the necessary signatures to have the City Commission call for an election to fill out the remaining two year term of former mayor Bob Werkhoven.

City Auditor Avis Richter said petitioners submitted, within the 15 day required time line, more than the 66 signatures from city residents needed for the city commission to set up an election.

Richter said City Commissioners will fornally address the Special Election Resolution at the June 7, 2016 City Commission meeting.

The time line will include time to officially publish notice of the election in the official newspaper.

Potential candidates will have 30 days to take out and have petitions signed, returned and qualified from June 13, 2016, to July 10, 2016.

Following the submission and approval of the petitions, candidates will have 64 days to campaign.

That sets the Special Election date of September 15, 2016.

Absentee voting will also be allowed in this election

Under the City Code, the City Commission may call a special election to fill the unexpired term, or may, after 15 days appoint a person to fill the unexpired term.

Another option is upon a petition of 5 percent of the qualified electors (based on the total number of ballots cast in the last city general election) the city commission must call a special election if there is more than 6 months left on the term, and the petition has been submitted within 15 days of the vacancy.

Mayor Robert Werkhoven resigned on May 12, 2016, and the City Commission accepted his resignation at the May 17, 2016, City Commission meeting. The current mayoral term in Valley City ends in June of 2018.

Allegedly a couple of punches were thrown between those involved.

The youths apparently knew each other, and were the only ones involved.

No injuries were reported.

Opp says a report will be sent to juvenile authorities to determine if any action will be taken against those involved.

Jamestown (CSi) The North Dakota Aeronautics Commission has approved the airport’s grant application to cover part of the cost of acquiring, transporting and installing a Jetway passenger-boarding bridge. That according to Jamestown Regional Airport Authority Chairman, Jim Boyd.

The Airport Authority agreed to pay $32,000 for two passenger-boarding bridges from Minot International Airport in May. The total cost for the project is $126,000, which will cover the disassembling and transportation of the bridge and installing the bridge and connecting it to the airport terminal.

Boyd says the airport will receive about $88,000 for the passenger-boarding bridge.

Boyd was also informed by North Dakota Aeronautics Commission director, Kyle Wanner, that the commission had also approved the Airport Authority’s grant request to fund 90 percent of a project to expand the Jamestown Regional Airport’s terminal building. An interior wall of the terminal building will be moved out and the secure-seating area will be expanded from 39 to 50 seats.

Sam Seafeldt, Jamestown Regional Airport manager, said the terminal expansion project has a cost of $16,000, with the Airport Authority to pay about $1,600 for the local match.

Between the two projects Jamestown Regional Airport is receiving about $100,000 from the state.

WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Children playing with water pistols are being credited with extinguishing a fire on the deck of a West Fargo house in which a person was sleeping inside.

Fire Chief Dan Fuller says “we were probably minutes away from having a real, real serious fire.”

NFL…

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) –  The AFL-CIO has filed a friend of the court brief on behalf of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, asking the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to reconsider a decision handed down by a three-judge panel in April.

Brady was suspended four games for what the league said was a scheme to use improperly inflated footballs in the 2015 AFC Championship game. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell rejected Brady’s initial appeal and gave him a four-game ban before the punishment was thrown out and later reinstated by the courts.

The AFL-CIO said in its brief that Goodell “acted arbitrarily as an employer seeking to justify his own disciplinary decision rather than as a neutral arbitrator considering an appeal.”
