In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama is announcing his formal endorsement of Hillary Clinton. In an online video, Obama calls on Democrats to unify behind his former secretary of state’s bid and, in his words, “build on the progress” of his eight years in the White House. He says, “I want you to be the first to know that I’m with her.” Obama is also praising Democratic primary candidate Bernie Sanders for engaging young voters and highlighting the issues of income inequality and money in politics. He said, “Embracing that message is going to help us win in November.” Clinton and Obama will campaign together next week in Wisconsin.

WASHINGTON (AP) – A spokesman for Bernie Sanders says the Vermont senator had a “wide-ranging discussion” with President Barack Obama Thursday about issues facing working families and ways to “create an economy that works for all people,” not just the wealthy. The spokesman says Sanders requested the meeting with Obama because he was “interested in his input.” Sanders is also meeting Thursday with Democratic Senate leaders. Sanders said after his meeting with Obama that he plans to continue his campaign through next week’s primary in the District of Columbia.

WASHINGTON (AP) – House Republicans are laying out a national security agenda that seeks to turn the conversation away from Donald Trump’s contentious presidential campaign and toward concrete policies for securing America’s borders and defeating extremist groups. Speaking today at the Council on Foreign Relations, Congressman Michael McCaul of Texas said Trump’s proposed plan to ban all Muslims from coming into the United States isn’t practical. He says the U.S. can’t ban an entire race or religion from entry. House Speaker Paul Ryan, meanwhile, says President Barack Obama “shrugged off” the Islamic State group.

BALTIMORE (AP) – A police captain who used to oversee the development of Baltimore Police Department policies has been testifying in the trial of a police van driver facing a murder charge in the death of a black man who was injured in the van. The trial for Officer Caesar Goodson began today. Capt. Martin Bartness testified that officers are required to ensure the safety of prisoners and buckle them into seat belts. Prosecutors say Goodson intentionally left Freddie Gray unbuckled and gave him a “rough ride,” and was negligent when he failed to get Gray a medic. Goodson’s defense attorney says Goodson followed the rules.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Federal officials say they’ve ruled out requiring psychological testing for airline pilots. This, despite an air crash last year in which a German pilot deliberately flew an airliner full of passengers into a mountainside. Michael Huerta, the Federal Aviation Administration’s administrator, says psychological tests are ineffective because they reveal a pilot’s mental health for only a moment in time without providing insight into whether the pilot will suffer problems later.
