BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – In both the governor’s race and a farming referendum, North Dakota primary voters turned aside the Republican establishment.

Former Microsoft executive Doug Burgum pulled off something of a surprise win Tuesday in the GOP primary for the state’s top job. He defeated longtime Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem – the endorsed candidate of the state’s GOP convention.

And voters overwhelmingly rejected a new law passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature that would have exempted pork and dairy operations from a Depression-era ban on corporate farming. Eight other states have laws restricting corporate farming, though all allow exemptions for some livestock operations.

The GOP battle between Burgum and Stenehjem featured a spirited debate about which candidate was better suited to revive a state economy slumping due to depressed oil and crop prices.

Burgum will face the Deomocratic endorsed candidate for governor, Marvin Nelson in November.

 x-Doug Burgum 67,450 – 59 percent
     Paul Sorum 2,139 – 2 percent
     Wayne Stenehjem 43,800 – 39 percent

 Measure 1-Allow Corporate Farming

     432 of 432 precincts – 100 percent

     Yes,  31,787 – 24 percent
     x-No,  99,045 – 76 percent

(JAMESTOWN, ND) – Today, the North Dakota Farmers Union (NDFU) thanked voters for soundly rejecting Measure 1. Measure 1 would have allowed corporate farming in North Dakota.

“We always believed that the people of North Dakota would agree that the family farm structure is best for our state’s economy and our communities,” said Mark Watne, NDFU president. “The results tonight are a strong message that the people don’t want corporate farming in North Dakota.”

Last year, the North Dakota State Legislature passed SB 2351, which would have allowed corporate ownership of swine and dairy operations. NDFU collected more than 20,000 signatures to put the law to a vote of the people. Measure 1 was the result of that effort.

“From the minute this law passed, we saw tremendous grassroots support to overturn the law,” Watne said. “People were fired up, and they did not want this dangerous law to go into effect. The volunteer support and enthusiasm was remarkable.”

NDFU and North Dakotans for Family Farms ran the campaign to overturn the law. More than 90,000 calls were made and 5,000 doors were knocked on.

“We left no stone unturned to defeat Measure 1, because it was that important to us and to our state,” Watne said. “There is a reason that our volunteers made tens of thousands of calls in January alone. North Dakotans want to keep family farming strong in our state. And defeating Measure 1 was critical to that.”

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot voters have overwhelmingly approved major changes to the makeup of the City Council in North Dakota’s fourth-largest city.

Nearly three-fourths of voters in Tuesday’s election favored reducing the council’s size from 14 members elected from wards to six members elected at large, plus a voting mayor. The change will take effect a year from now.

Proponents say the change will ensure competitive races and force council members to look more broadly at city issues. Proponents gained a second victory Tuesday when group spokesman Shaun Sipma was elected to the council.

Opposition group spokeswoman Lianne Zeltinger said she’s disappointed other options for changes to the council won’t be considered now.
