In world and national news…
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – A federal prosecutor says he won’t speculate on whether any charges may be brought in the investigation into the nightclub shooting in Orlando. U.S. Attorney Lee Bentley told reporters Wenesday that it would be premature to speculate. An official who was briefed on the case has said authorities believe the gunman’s wife knew ahead of time about the attack, but that they are reluctant to charge her on that basis alone. The FBI is urging people who’ve had any contact with Omar Mateen, or who know anything about him, to contact them.
WASHINGTON (AP) – Donald Trump is again warning of the dangers of Islamic extremism in the wake of the Orlando attack. He told supporters at a rally in Atlanta that the United States is taking in thousands of refugees when they “don’t think like us” and we don’t know who they are. He’s renewing his call for a temporary ban on Muslim immigrants. Trump also said authorities need to “respectfully” keep an eye on mosques. Without specifically mentioning Muslims, he also repeated his claim that some people are “not reporting” others who pose a risk.
WASHINGTON (AP) – The White House says President Barack Obama’s visit to Orlando Thursday is about offering comfort and support to a community that’s grieving. Spokesman Josh Earnest says many details about the president’s trip are still being worked out, but Obama will meet with and offer condolences to the families of those who were killed and will seek to comfort those who survived. Earnest says the trip will be an emotional one for Obama and that he will speak publicly about the experience.
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) – Wildlife officials have removed five alligators from a lagoon near a Walt Disney World resort in Florida. The gators were killed and cut open, but there was no sign of a missing 2-year-old boy. He’s presumed to be dead after being snatched off the shore and dragged underwater by an alligator. Disney has closed the beaches at its Florida resorts, out of what it calls “an abundance of caution.”
WASHINGTON (AP) – The Federal Reserve is keeping interest rates unchanged in light of an uncertain job market. And it’s offering no specifics about when its next rate hike might occur. The Fed says in a statement after its latest policy meeting that the pace of job growth has slowed, even as the overall economy has picked up speed. Policy-makers are indicating that they need a clearer picture of economic developments before raising rates again. Some economists think a July hike is possible if the job market rebounds and markets remain calm after Britain’s vote next week on whether to leave the European Union.
