MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Gov. Jack Dalrymple has suspended Ward County Sheriff Steve Kukowski while a criminal case proceeds against him.
Kukowski faces misdemeanor charges of refusing to perform a public duty and reckless endangerment in the October 2014 death of 25-year-old jail inmate Dustin Irwin. The Mandaree man died at a hospital after going into cardiac arrest.
Kukowski was charged in February. The next month he went on a 90-day medical leave to recover from knee surgery. He returned to work Wednesday, but Dalrymple on the advice of Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem suspended him for six months or until the criminal case is resolved.
Kukowski maintains his innocence. He’s scheduled for a three-day jury trial beginning Aug. 29.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The lawyer for a man facing obstruction of justice charges for a massive credit card scheme that was prosecuted five years ago says the case should be resolved soon.

Authorities say Adeyemo lied about his identity as well. He said during the original trial that he lived in Canada after fleeing from his native Nigeria in 2005. Prosecutors allege he lived in the U.S for a dozen years.
Lawyers in the case say they should reach a plea deal within three months.
The case was tried in North Dakota because one of the victimized banks is based there.

The longtime sideline reporter has been added to ESPN’s broadcast team for Game 6 of the NBA Finals tonight between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers. Sager, who has worked for Turner Sports for 34 years, will share sideline reporting duties with Doris Burke on ABC’s broadcast.
Sager, who has long been one of the league’s most revered personalities, was diagnosed with leukemia in 2014. He says the invitation to join the broadcast “is a great honor.”

Obama travels to the city to offer solace and healing to a distraught town that’s been mourning 49 victims and praying for the recovery of dozens of others who were wounded. URAYASU, Japan (AP) – The Japanese town of Urayasu says it’s helping tackle the nation’s declining birth rate. The Tokyo suburb says it’ll help women cover the cost of freezing their eggs. Urayasu is allocating 90 million yen ($850,000) over three years to fund a research project conducted by a local university hospital. Officials hope that preserving the eggs will encourage women to give birth when they are ready instead of giving up having children.
