Jamestown  (CSi)  The Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office released the name of a Jamestown man killed in a traffic crash north of Jamestown Saturday.

33 year olf Joshua Mering, was driving a vehicle on a gravel road east of N.D. Highway 20 Saturday. Sheriff Chad Kaiser said Monday the vehicle rolled into a slough while it was followed by units from the sheriff’s office.

No other details have been released about the incident, as the investigation continues..

The accident remains under investigation.

 

Wiskek (CSi) A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board indicates the cause of a small plane crash on June 9, 2016 in May Lake.

The report says the nose of the small plane pitched down rapidly while making a turn shortly after takeoff from the Wishek, North Dakota airport earlier this month.

The pilot, 20 year-old Colbie Fandrich of Wishek, his 38 year-old aunt, Christine Fandrich, and her 10 year-old son died in the June 9 crash just southwest of the Wishek Airport.

The initial report says a witness on the airport ramp saw the plane’s nose go down rapidly after making a turn to the right. The plane crashed into about four feet of water in May Lake.

Fandrich was flying his aunt and cousin to Bismarck for a dental appointment.

 

Valley City (CSi) Following over 40 years in the education field, as the Valley City Public Schools Superintendent, Dean Koppelman retires from the school district on June 30th.

At the conclusion of his final regular school board meeting on June 15 Koppelman thanked the community and the school district.

School board president Joyce Braunagel presented Koppelman with his portrait now hanging in the board meeting room with the other superintendents who have served the school district.

On Friday, July 1, 2016, Josh Johnson becomes the new Valley City Public Schools Superintendent.

 

 

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) – A McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office corporal accused of using his vehicle to crash into a fleeing motorcycle has been acquitted on a felony reckless endangerment charge.
 The Williston Herald  reports that Travis Bateman was cleared Wednesday in Watford City.
 Bateman allegedly injured the motorcycle driver and a passenger in the incident.
 An attorney for Bateman didn’t immediately respond to a telephone message requesting comment from The Associated Press.

 

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A Grand Forks man has been sentenced to serve 20 months in prison in connection with the October burglary of a Kmart store.  
 
      33-year-old Luke Gatlin also was ordered to pay more than $10,000 in restitution.
 
     Authorities say Gatlin stole electronics and jewelry from the store.  He pleaded guilty this week to burglary and dealing in stolen property charges.
 
     Gatlin will be on supervised probation for five years following his release.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple has reappointed a Fargo business executive to a second-year term on the state Board of Higher Education.
 
     Don Morton is senior director within Microsoft Corp. and part of the Microsoft Business Solutions group. He has an extensive football coaching background, having served as head coach at North Dakota State University, University of Tulsa and University of Wisconsin.
 
     A nominating group selected three finalists for the board position, including Thomas Atkinson, a Bismarck environmental engineer, and Wayne Trottier Jr., who works part-time as the school superintendent in Sawyer.
 
     Last week, board members voted for Morton to continue on as the group’s vice chair, before Dalrymple announced his decision.
 
     Dalrymple also appointed North Dakota State University’s Nick Evans to serve a one-year term as student member on the board.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Public Service Commission has approved a proposed $153 million wind farm and associated electric transmission line in Oliver and Morton counties.
 
     The three-member panel on Wednesday unanimously approved the project’s siting application, clearing the way for construction to start.
 
     A subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources is planning the wind farm of up to 48 turbines and associated facilities on about 34 square miles in northeastern Morton County and southeastern Oliver County. It would produce up to 100 megawatts of power.
 
     The project also is to include a 4  1/2-mile-long, $11.4 million transmission line to connect the wind farm to the power grid.

 

 

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction preventing the city of Williston for now from enforcing a July 1 deadline for oil field crew camps to shut down.
 
      Judge Daniel Hovland’s decision was based on a possible technical error by the City Commission when the group voted to approve the deadline.
 
     Workforce housing companies have sued Williston in both federal and state court. Both cases are ongoing.
 
     City officials maintain the construction of new apartments and hotels has caught up with population growth, and temporary worker camps are no longer needed.
 
     Oil industry officials say that despite the current oil slump, some temporary housing is still needed for rotational workers, beyond hotels that don’t serve meals and apartments that workers don’t need most of the time.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Another week of heavy rainfall has drowned out some crops in northeastern North Dakota, while the southwestern part of the state received some much-needed moisture.

The Agriculture Department says in its weekly crop report that up to 4 inches of rain was reported in the northeast. The impact of the flooding won’t be known until later.

The report also says that while the southwest got needed rain, storms also brought strong winds and hail, damaging some crops.

The condition of the state’s staple spring wheat crop is still rated 82 percent good to excellent.

Pasture and range conditions statewide are rated 66 percent good to excellent. Stock water supplies are 87 percent adequate to surplus.

Bismarck (CSi) The North Dakota Associated Press Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association, awards has recognized the University of Jamestown women’s basketball team.

Coach Greg Ulland was named the Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year and, it is the Team of the Year, along with the Dickinson State softball team.

Two-time All-american Jessica Buck finished as a finalist for athlete of the year. 

The Jimmie women finished the season with a school-record 29 wins and both the regular season and postseason titles in the North Star Athletic Association.

 

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The University of North Dakota has unveiled its Fighting Hawks logo. It depicts a white hawk head with black shading and a black eye, atop the letters “ND” in green. The Grand Forks school retired its controversial Fighting Sioux nickname nearly four years ago after the NCAA deemed it to be hostile and abusive. The Fighting Hawks nickname was selected in a vote of alumni, students and staff and has been in use since late last year.

LYNX…

     MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – President Barack Obama will honor the 2015 WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx next week.
 
     The Lynx are invited to meet Obama at the White House on Monday.
 
     Minnesota has previously been honored by the president for past championships. In October, the Lynx captured their third championship in five seasons.
 
     The Lynx are off to a 13-0 start this season after edging the Los Angeles Sparks 72-69 Tuesday in a showdown between the top teams in the WNBA. Minnesota hosts Los Angeles in a rematch Friday night at Target Center.

NEW YORK (AP) – The New York Knicks have acquired former NBA most valuable player Derrick Rose, guard Justin Holiday and a 2017 second-round pick from the Chicago Bulls for center Robin Lopez and guards Jose Calderon and Jerian Grant. Rose played just 166 games over the last five seasons after suffering a severe knee injury during the 2011 playoffs. Rose averaged 16.4 points in 66 games last season.

 

 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The Pacers have traded George Hill to Utah and acquired Jeff Teague (teeg) in a three-way trade with Atlanta. The Hawks received the No. 12 overall pick in Thursday night’s draft.

 LAS VEGAS (AP) – The NHL Board of Governors has unanimously approved an expansion team for Las Vegas, awarding its 31st franchise to billionaire businessman Bill Foley. The club will begin play in 2017-18 at the T-Mobile Arena, the $375 million building that opened just off the Las Vegas Strip in April. Foley is expected to pay $500 million to the NHL’s other owners as an expansion fee.

     LAS VEGAS (AP) – The NHL has handed out its individual awards just a week after the Pittsburgh Penguins were crowned the Stanley Cup champions.
 
     Chicago Blackhawks forward and league scoring champ Patrick Kane has been presented with the Hart Trophy as the league’s best player. Kane also picked up the Ted Lindsay Award as the outstanding player.
 
     Another Hawks forward came away with hardware as Artemi Panarin (ahr-TEH’-mee pah-NAHR’-ihn) claimed the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie.
 
     Anze Kopitar (AHN’-zhay KOH’-pih-tahr) is the first member of the Kings to win the Frank Selke (SEHL’-kee) Trophy as the circuit’s top defensive forward. Kopitar also got the Lady Byng Trophy as the most gentlemanly player.
 
     The Vezina (VEH’-zih-nuh) Trophy went to Capitals netminder Braden Holtby, who was recognized as the best goaltender.
 
     Los Angeles blueliner Drew Doughty has finally earned the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman.
 
     Nashville’s Shea Weber was given the Mark Messier Trophy as the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities both on and off the ice.
 
     The Jack Adams Award goes to Washington’s Barry Trotz, who took coach of the year honor after leading the Capitals to the best regular-season record.

LONDON (AP) – Two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka has withdrawn from Wimbledon because of a right knee injury.
 
     It was the same knee she hurt at the French Open, forcing her to retire during her first-round match. She hasn’t played since.
 
     Azarenka, ranked No. 6, was seeded the same for the grass-court Grand Slam starting Monday.
 
     The Belarusian has earned three titles this year, including two of the biggest outside of the majors, Indian Wells and Miami, in March. She beat Serena Williams in the Indian Wells final.
 
     At Wimbledon, she has reached the semifinals twice, and quarterfinals twice. Williams stopped her in three of those runs.
 
     LONDON (AP) – Wimbledon organizers have installed recently-crowned French Open champ Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) and Serena Williams as the No. 1 seeds. Andy Murray is No. 2 on the men’s side, followed by 17-time major winner Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka (vah-VRINK’-ah). For the women, reigning French Open champion Garbine Muguruza (GAHR’-been-yuh moo-guh-ROO’-thuh) holds the second seed, just in front of Agnieszka Radwanska (ahg-nee-ESH’-kuh rahd-VAHN’-skuh) and Angelique Kerber.

     UNDATED (AP) – Rory McIlroy has decided against competing in the Olympics because of the Zika (ZEE’-kuh) virus. The four-time major champion says he may want to start a family in the future, and that going to the Olympics is “a risk I am unwilling to take.”

WASHINGTON (AP) – There’s no word on how long the protest will continue. House Democrats have been holding a sit-in on the House floor to protest gun control legislation that lawmakers failed to vote on before wrapping up for the July 4 holiday. More than 20 hours after the protest began some 16 Democrats remained including Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.       
 
     WASHINGTON (AP) – Before adjourning for the Independence Day holiday, the House early this morning passed a $1.1 billion measure to combat the Zika virus. The vote on the GOP-drafted measure broke along party lines. Democrats weren’t happy with the easing of rules on certain pesticide permit requirements for battling the mosquitoes that can spread Zika. And they also opposed provisions that effectively blocked Planned Parenthood from delivering birth control services under a $95 million grant program.   
 
     CHICAGO (AP) – The National Weather Service says crews will head out this morning to investigate the damage caused by at least four tornadoes the touched down overnight in northern Illinois. The weather service says firefighters responded to reports of people trapped in a house in Seneca, about 70 miles southwest of Chicago. No injuries were reported.           
 
     MIAMI (AP) – The Coast Guard is still looking for the bodies of three members of a Florida family who were on a sailboat suspected of going down in stormy weather. The U.S. Coast Guard says it’s recovered one body, 33 miles off Florida’s southwest coast, but they haven’t identified the person. The Coast Guard says 45-year-old Ace Kimberly and his children, ages 17, 15 and 13, had been living on the sailboat for a year before Kimberly contacted his brother Sunday, saying they were sailing in “6-foot seas and thunderstorms.”
 
     ATLANTA (AP) – The 39-year-old son of R&B legend Gladys Knight has been released from jail near Atlanta, after the restaurants he owns were raided. Shanga Hankerson is accused of taking a total of $650,000 in state sales and withholding taxes, which totals more than $1 million after penalties and interest. Hankerson is the owner of Gladys Knight’s Chicken & Waffles restaurants, which were raided Tuesday by the Georgia Department of Revenue. Knight only lends her name to the restaurant chain.
