FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A large sinkhole has opened at a busy Fargo intersection.

A driver called 911 about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday to report the sinkhole in the road at the intersection of 42nd Street and 9th Avenue South.?

Police used their squad cars to barricade the street and re-direct traffic around the sinkhole until street barriers could be put up.

The hole is about 8 feet wide by 10 feet long and varies in depth.

Public Works Supervisor Lee Anderson says it appears the street collapse was the result of a problem with a large sewer pipe.

FORT RANSOM, N.D. (AP) – Fort Ransom State Park in southeastern North Dakota is holding its annual Sodbuster Days this coming weekend.

Thousands of people are expected to gather in the park in the Sheyenne River Valley to see how early North Dakota settlers lived. The event is sponsored by the Fort Ransom Sodbuster Association and the state Parks and Recreation Department.

The event is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Highlights on Sunday include a pancake breakfast and a parade.

Admission is $7 per person. Children 12 and under get in free. The state park daily vehicle entrance fee is waived during the weekend.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol says a rollover crash near Steele has killed a 45-year-old Florida man.

Authorities say Neon Caldwell of Jacksonville, Florida died at the scene at about 5:40 a.m. on Saturday.

The patrol says Caldwell was a passenger in the semi that hit a ditch and rolled on Highway 3, a few miles north of Steele, in central North Dakota.

Troopers say 22-year-old James Whitney of Grand Forks was the driver of the vehicle. Authorities say he suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a Bismarck hospital.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A Williston mother of four and her boyfriend have been sentenced on child abuse charges.

25-year-old Daniel Kempton pleaded guilty to four counts of child abuse, and ingesting a controlled substance. He was sentenced to three years in prison.

Thirty-one-year-old Stephanie Johnsrud was sentenced to 10 years of supervised probation and given credit for the 47 days she had spent in jail.

Kempton was arrested last July at the Williston home he shared with Johnsrud, after authorities discovered fresh bruises on Johnsrud’s children.

Prosecutors say a 3-year-old boy also suffered several fractured bones and no medical attention was sought for the child.

Authorities say tests showed a 3-month-old daughter had been exposed to marijuana and methamphetamine. Johnsrud’s 6-year-old daughter tested positive for marijuana.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Supreme Court has upheld a court order requiring a Minot man to nearly $50,000 in restitution for shooting and severely injuring his girlfriend.

Robert Putney Jr. was convicted of aggravated assault and sentenced to four years in prison for shooting the woman in the stomach in 2014. A judge ordered Putney pay nearly $50,000, or about half of the victim’s total medical bill.

He appealed the conviction to the Supreme Court, arguing that double jeopardy should apply because he had previously pleaded guilty to simple assault in municipal court. He argued that he can’t be tried twice for the same crime. Putney also argued a judge abused his discretion when he ordered Putney to pay the restitution.

     The Supreme Court disagreed.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A third man has been indicted for operating a scheme at a Fargo neighborhood grocery store in which government food stamp benefits were illegally turned into cash.

Two other men have been sentenced in the case. Lamia Ali and Abass Amedi were ordered to serve unspecified periods of home confinement, perform community service and repay more than $365,000.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Some brand inspection fees are going up in North Dakota, starting Friday.

The North Dakota Stockmen’s Association says the per-head inspection fee will go from $1 to $1.50. The permanent horse permit fee will rise from $10 to $25.

The registered feedlot permit fee will go from $20 to $25, and the per-head registered feedlot fee from 10 cents to 50 cents.

The Stockmen’s Association administers the brand inspection program on behalf of the state. The rancher group says the changes came after a public hearing and comment period, and were reviewed by the Legislature’s Administrative Rules Committee.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Farmers Union says it will fight for price protections for milk to stimulate the state’s slumping dairy industry.

Farmers Union President Mark Watne  says his group has joined charters from Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota and California to lobby lawmakers for a higher price point that will cover the cost of milk production.

The North Dakota led the campaign to reverse the Legislature’s decision last year to exempt pork and dairy operations from the state’s anti-corporate farming law. North Dakota voters overwhelmingly rejected the law last month.

State agriculture data show the number of dairy farms in North Dakota has decreased from about 540 in 2002 to fewer than 90 at present

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says American white pelicans are nesting at a central North Dakota refuge in near-record numbers.

Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge Manager Neil Shook says an aerial count shows 33,694 breeding adults. That’s up from about 27,000 birds last year.

The white pelican colony at the refuge north of Medina peaked at 35,466 birds in 2000. The pelicans winter mainly in the Gulf Coast states but some fly to North Dakota from as far away as California to nest on the island.

The pelicans normally stay in North Dakota through September, raising their young and feasting at small prairie ponds within a 100-mile radius of the refuge.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The president of Bismarck State College says 15 employees are retiring by the end of this year and most of them have been driven out by statewide budget cuts.

President Larry Skogen says he expects more retirements from teachers and staff to be announced as the school grapples with a shrinking budget due to depressed oil and crop prices.

North Dakota United represents thousands of teachers across the state. President Nick Archuleta says he’s heard from teachers across the entire North Dakota University System. He says they are worried about how statewide budget cuts will impact higher education in the state, including the ability to attract students.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota is receiving $705,000 for AmeriCorps programs that will add more than 130 volunteers to the state.

The state received the funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that includes AmeriCorps.

AmeriCorps is a nationwide community service program. Its members are involved with programs in education, the environment, disaster response and recovery, and supporting veterans and military families.

North Dakota AmeriCorps Program administrator Ryan Volk says more than 1,800 AmeriCorps members in North Dakota have served 2 million hours and earned more than $4.5 million in education scholarships.

The move was made Monday before the Twins hosted Oakland, and first baseman Kennys Vargas was recalled from Triple-A Rochester to fill in. Plouffe had an earlier stint on the DL for a strained muscle on his right side.
