Saturday Weather recap…

Jamestown (CSi)  A good portion of eastern North Dakota including the Carrington, Jamestown, and Valley City areas Saturday evening received storms that resulted from individual super cells combining, to form a line of severe weather.

The Storms formed Saturday afternoon in the Devils Lake area, and continued east and southeast.

Severe weather early Saturday evening moved into the Carrington and Foster County area dropping heavy rain, large hail and tornadic activity in the City of Carrington.

The large cell moved south into northern Stutsman County where a tornado was reported as the slow moving storm dropped upwards of three inches of rain before moving south causing a severe a thunderstorm warning, for the City of Jamestown.  The Weather Service issued and Urban and small stream flood warning until 5-a.m., Sunday where the heavier rainfall amounts occurred.

In Jamestown hail was reported, accompanied by heavy rain and wind gusts to 45 mph.

At Jamestown Speedway marble size hail was reported, and other reports indicated hail in  varying sizes in the city.

Power was out later Saturday night in a section of Jamestown including the southwest part of town, that knocked Jamestown radio stations reporting on the storms, off the air.

The storm dropped an inch of rain in a half hour in Jamestown between 11 and 11:30-p.m., leading to street flooding.  During the storm there were 3-thousand lightning strikes over a 15 minute period in the Jamestown area.

Another storm cell formed near Medina and moved east  into Jamestown causing a lesser amount of rain.

By midnight Saturday the rainfall for the day including a mid-morning shower amounted to 1.15 inches downtown on the CSi weather computer at Historic Franklin School.

At the Jamestown weather station the official storm rain total was .89 inches for a daily Saturday total of .94 inches.

The systems combined and moved into Barnes County warranting a severe thunderstorm warning with high wind and heavy rain.

The line of severe weather then stretched from the Jamestown area into Minnesota, while another system caused much the same severe weather in Logan and LaMoure Counties then moving east.  Wahpeton recorded 4-6 inches of rain, leading to street flooding.

Northeast South  Dakota also received similar severe weather.

Northwest North Dakota including west of Grand Forks received severe weather, then into the city and moved east, and the combined systems early Sunday Morning covered Minnesota’s lake country.

Unsettled weather was forecasted for basically  the same areas through today.

Storms reformed Sunday evening and into this morning but not of a severe nature, with gusty winds and small hail.

In the 24 hours ending at 10-a.m., Monday Valley City reported 1.45 inches of rain.

Valley City Fire Chief Gary Retterath reports fire fighters were called two times to a residence Monday morning where lightning caused a fire at 1026 11th Street, Southwest.

In Valley City, there were three isolated power outages reported Monday morning.

About 6-a.m. a power outage was reported in a section of Southeast Jamestown, which lasted about one hour.

Another powere outage was reported in Northwest Jamestown

More information on the outage when information is available from Otter Tail Power.

Jamestown (CSi) The Regular Meeting of the North Dakota State Historical Society Board was held Friday at the CSi Technology Center at Historic Franklin School.

In addition to the meeting members toured the former elementary school, now home to CSi Cable and CSi Computers.

The board members also toured the 1883 Stutsman County Courthouse in Jamestown.

At Friday’s meeting the board addressed budget cuts, in line with Governor Jack Dalrymple’s request for state agencies to cut their budgets by 10-percent, stemming from the downturn in oil revenues and the decrease in farm commodity prices.

Tentative cuts in the base budget are targeted for 10-percent or $1.8 million, or 10-percent.

The board discussed ways to accomplish the cut in spending through such means as reducing the staffing to save about $604,000.

The method discussed to achieve the cuts also includes not filling vacancies on the staff, current staff members taking on larger roles, along with upcoming staff retirements.

Also discussed was reducing the number of temporary employees, and seasonal staff. Staff reductions would save about $160,000.

Operations cuts of 12-percent were discussed, saving another $360,000.

Program reductions will also be made to save costs.

It was pointed out that the way the State Historical Society operates will be looking at things in a different way.

It was brought up that the NDSHS will look at applying for grant funding, and seeking other funding sources. More cuts may be necessary at the end of this year.

The State Historical Society Board passed a reduced budget for the 2017-19 biennium, and will bring budget requests to the State Legislature.

At the conclusion of the board members, Director Claudia Berg presented Art Todd of Jamestown a photographic remembrance of the Heritage Center, and State Museum.

She noted that Todd served as board president and a total of 23 years, on the board, from 1981-83 and 1993-2016.

Todd said the picture will have a place of prominence in his home.

The money was raised by county Farmers Union organizations through fundraisers and donations to help build a new regional service center in Bismarck. The center is expected to better serve 28 central and western North Dakota counties.

Farmers Union President Mark Watne pointed out that he was pleased with the effort, saying, It’s a great humanitarian gesture and another level of involvement in the food chain from our farm and ranch members,” he said. “They understand the importance of getting their product to market and into the mouths of hungry people.”

North Dakota’s only Food Bank, the Great Plains Food Bank’s services span statewide with more than 228 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and charitable feeding programs in 117 local communities.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Supporters of a ballot initiative campaign that would legalize marijuana for medical purposes say they have gathered enough signatures to put the issue to a statewide vote.

Supporters of the so-called North Dakota Compassionate Care Act intend to submit the signatures on Monday to Secretary of State Al Jaeger’s office.

The initiative will need signatures from about 13,500 voters to qualify for the ballot.

With voters’ approval, the initiative would make it legal for North Dakota residents to possess up to 3 ounces of marijuana for medical purposes. It says those who qualify could obtain the drug from a state-licensed dispensary or grow a limited supply for personal use.

The diversion is meant to reduce the flood risk for 225,000 people and 70 square miles of infrastructure. The area has dealt with major floods several times in the last decade.

Rifles, pistols, air guns, gun parts and supplies, and chairs are among the items that will be auctioned.

ELGIN, N.D. (AP) – A rural Elgin farmer is taking part in a statewide pilot program to see if hemp has potential as a crop for growers in North Dakota.

Clarence Laub views the 10-acre hemp plot near his family farm south of Elgin as an experiment.

Since the crop was planted on June 1, emerging growth has been fairly uneven and spotty across the field. The seeds have received less than an inch of rain for most of the month, but recent precipitation made a big difference, with Laub seeing new plants coming in and patches where plants are at least a foot tall.

Laub is one of seven growers who are participating in the hemp program sponsored by the North Dakota Department of Agriculture.

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – The Lake Region Community Shelter in Devils Lake has provided food and temporary housing for 15 people in need since opening on May 6.
Board president Karen Nick tells the Devils Lake Journal  that most of the referring services have been locally based, but others around the state have started to take notice.
Of the 15 people who have stayed at the Lake Region Community Shelter, none have stayed longer than three weeks and about half of them have had success after reaching out to the service.
Although the shelter has seen success, Nick says it has had trouble recruiting enough volunteers, because it doesn’t have any permanent, paid staff members.
Nick estimates that 26 volunteers have worked about 600 hours at the shelter since it opened.

Duncan announced his retirement on Monday after 19 seasons, five championships, two MVP awards and 15 All-Star appearances. It marks the end of an era for the Spurs and the NBA.

Duncan was the No. 1 overall pick out of Wake Forest in 1997 and teamed with Gregg Popovich, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili to make the Spurs the most enduring success story in modern American sports. His reserved demeanor and game built on fundamentals more than athleticism served as the backbone for the franchise’s unparalleled run.

Duncan was a three-time NBA Finals MVP and was named to the All-NBA First Team 10 times in his career. He is fifth on the NBA’s career list in blocks, sixth in rebounds and 14th in scoring.

Lang takes major after Nordqvist is assessed penalty

SAN MARTIN, Calif. (AP) – There was a rather bizarre ending to the U.S. Women’s Open, which was won by Brittany Lang over Anna Norqvist in a three-hole playoff.

Nordqvist touched the sand with her club in a bunker for a two-stroke penalty on the second extra hole, but the players weren’t told of the decision until they were on the next hole.

Lang sealed the win with a short par putt on the final playoff hole, while Nordqvist made bogey to lose by three shots.

The USGA’s delayed decision comes a month after Dustin Johnson played much of the final round of the U.S. Open not knowing if he would be penalized one stroke because his ball moved as he addressed it on the fifth green. Johnson wound up winning the tournament in regulation despite the penalty.

Lang closed with a 71 for a 6-under total through regulation. Nordqvist forced the playoff with a 5-under 67.

Third-round leader and top-ranked Lydia Ko shot a 75 to finish in a four-way tie for third, two strokes back.
