MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot residents who have counted on an affordable travel option are concerned about the loss of the city’s sole intercity bus service.

Jefferson Lines stopped serving Minot in the last week of June.

The company didn’t respond to requests for comment from the newspaper.

Louis McLeod is executive director of the Minot Area Homeless Coalition. He says service stopped without warning, which is troubling since the coalition helps between eight and 10 people per month travel by bus to other places.

Minot’s Domestic Violence Crisis Center has also used the bus to get clients who need to temporarily leave Minot for safety reasons to Bismarck.

Kate Olson of the emergency shelter says there isn’t funding that would let staff members transport people.

STANLEY, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol has identified the 89-year-old woman who died in a crash Sunday near Stanley.

The Highway Patrol says the woman was Stanley resident Elaine Lystad.

Authorities say 97-year-old Kenneth Lystad, also of Stanley, drove off the shoulder of the road Sunday afternoon and attempted to correct the pickup truck, but it spun clockwise, entered the ditch and rolled.

The truck came to a rest on its top at the edge of a hay field. Authorities say Elaine Lystad, the only passenger, was not wearing a seatbelt.

The Highway Patrol says crash remains under investigation.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A police officer in Fargo accused of drunken driving in Minnesota has resigned.

Fargo Police Chief Dave Todd says  Wes Libner has turned in his resignation letter.

Libner was arrested shortly after 5 a.m. July 2 on Highway 10 near Hawley, Minnesota.

Minnesota’s Clay County Sheriff’s Office says Libner was stopped by a deputy after someone called authorities to report a vehicle “weaving” down the highway. The station reports Libner’s blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit.

Libner was a school resource officer at Fargo South High School.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Supporters of a ballot initiative campaign that would legalize marijuana for medical purposes say they have gathered enough signatures to put the issue to a statewide vote.

Supporters of the so-called North Dakota Compassionate Care Act submitted about 17,600 signatures on Monday to the Secretary of State’s office.

The initiative will need signatures from about 13,500 qualified voters to be placed on the Nov. 8 ballot.

With voters’ approval, the initiative would make it legal for North Dakota residents to possess up to 3 ounces of marijuana for medical purposes.

The petition is separate from an effort to make it legal to grow, possess, use and distribute marijuana for people 21 and older. Supporters of that campaign say they did not obtain the required number of signatures by Monday’s deadline.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Highway Patrol troopers in the southeast region will be conducting alcohol saturation patrols in Fargo, West Fargo and around Cass County.

The saturation patrols start Tuesday and will run through Sunday.

Jamestown (CSi) The JRMC Foundation continues support for expansion of patient care through summer community events. The 6th Annual GOLF “fore” GOOD Tournament will be held on Friday, July 15, 2016 beginning at 12:30, at Jamestown Country Club.

Marlene Axtman, a JRMC Foundation Board Chair Member, Auxilian, volunteer and survivor says, “When I was going through cancer treatments, I had to travel to Bismarck.” It is her wish and the number one priority at JRMC to provide local, quality cancer care for our community. This year over 250 people in the circle hear the words, “you have cancer.” These words are only the beginning of what can be a very complicated journey.

Last year, the community made the difference. Along with a Farmers Union challenge grant, this tournament and the community provided critical funding to secure a commitment from an oncologist and outfit existing space in JRMC Clinic and Pharmacy with the necessary tools for this type of care.

Now, JRMC begins the next phase of the Journey to Oncology campaign: dedicated space and resources for patients on their journey.

The 6th Annual GOLF “fore” GOOD tournament provides funding for the Journey to Oncology. The tournament will be held at the Jamestown Country Club. This event is co-sponsored by The Davis Group and Physicians Realty Trust. Major sponsors committed to this years’ tournament include Wilhelm GMC Buick, Hillerud Construction, Great River Energy, Edward Jones Investments – Patrick Nygaard, Sanford Health, and Layered Salon. Proceeds will be in dedication to those conquering cancer for the launch of the oncology unit at JRMC.

Registration per player is $100 and includes 18-hole golf scramble, cart, meals, drink tickets, chances to win prizes, and a swag bag (valued at $100). The Hole-in-One is presented by Don Wilhelm GMC Buick. Deadline for registration is July 13th.

Weigel says the Valley City National Fish Hatchery also had a good year, shipping 1.7 million fingerlings.

Notable stockings included 1.7 million fingerlings in Devils Lake and 1.3 million at Lake Sakakawea.

Stanton’s longest shot was estimated at 497 feet. He hit the eight longest homers of the competition and 20 of the 21 deepest drives.

The AL has won three in a row, but the National League leads 43-41 overall with two ties. Anthony Rizzo and a lot of Cubs take on David Ortiz and a bunch of Red Sox, and the league that wins gets home-field advantage in the World Series.

Eduardo Nunez is the lone Minnesota Twins player on the AL squad.

TIMBERWOLVES-DUNN…

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Minnesota guard Kris Dunn, the No. 5 pick in last month’s draft, was held out of the Timberwolves’ game against Cleveland yesterday in the NBA’s Summer League in Las Vegas with a concussion.

Dunn has been entered into the NBA’s concussion protocol, and his status for the rest of summer league is unclear.

The Timberwolves were down 10 at the half, then got outscored 29-9 in the third quarter and wound up falling 99-68 to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

     LYNX-MOORE…

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Minnesota Lynx forward Maya Moore is the Western Conference Player of the Week.

The WNBA announced the award Monday. It’s Moore’s third Western Conference player of the week award this season and the 17th of her career.

Moore averaged 28.3 points, 3.3 assists and 6.3 rebounds as the Lynx went 2-1 last week.

The six-year pro out of Connecticut scored a team-high 33 points last Tuesday against the Chicago Sky. Thirteen of Moore’s points came in the fourth quarter and helped the Lynx erase a 10-point deficit for their third double-digit comeback win of the season.

Moore racked up 40 points on Thursday against Connecticut and added eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks. On Saturday she scored 12 points and a game-high seven assists against Dallas.

Casson spent the previous six seasons with the 49ers. He was the chief operating officer for the past two seasons.

It’s a bit of a homecoming for Casson. He worked for the Timberwolves for 11 years before leaving for the 49ers. While in Minnesota he rose to the senior vice president of corporate partnerships and game presentation.

Moor has left the team to work more directly with owner Glen Taylor’s business holdings.

 NBA-DUNCAN RETIRES…

SAN ANTONIO (AP) – Tim Duncan has called it a career after nearly two decades as the face and backbone of the San Antonio Spurs.

The quiet, big man is ending his 19-year NBA career with one franchise, having centered five NBA championships while playing in more than 1,000 games for the Spurs.

The No. 1 overall pick in 1997 goes out with two MVP awards among his list of accomplishments. Duncan was one of just four players to be named NBA Finals MVP at least three times. He was a 15-time All-Star, a member of the All-NBA first team 10 times and is one of only three players to win at least 1,000 games in his career. The other two are joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Robert Parrish.

He is fifth on the NBA’s career list in blocks, sixth in rebounds and 14th in scoring.

Duncan’s retirement comes two months after the Spurs were upset by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals.

The remainder of the stage is mainly flat but features a small climb a few kilometers before the finish line, which could favor late attacks.

GOLF…

TROON, Scotland (AP) –   Jordan Spieth calls his withdrawal from the Olympics “probably the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make in my life.”

Spieth says he’s a huge supporter of Olympic golf and playing for the United States. But he says health concerns over the Zika virus led him to sit out the sport’s return to the games for the first time since 1904.

The four top players in the world rankings are all skipping the Rio de Janeiro Games. Spieth was the last of the Big Four to make his decision, announcing it Monday after Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy withdrew from Olympic consideration.

Spieth had not commented on his decision until Tuesday’s scheduled news conference ahead of the British Open. He says he “very much struggled” with whether to play in Rio, going “back and forth” before finally making up his mind. He also says it will be “very difficult” to watch the opening ceremony on television and see other golfers competing for a gold medal.

Spieth goes on to say that playing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics is now one of his top priorities.

TENNIS-SHARAPOVA APPEAL…

Sharapova tested positive for meldonium at the Australian Open in January and received a two-year ban from the ITF. The five-time Grand Slam champion and former No. 1-ranked player filed an appeal last month, seeking to overturn or reduce the sanction.
