 VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol says a man who was mowing ditches along Interstate 94 was injured when the tractor he was driving was struck by a pickup.
 
     The patrol says 57-year-old Bruce Moritz of Valley City was treated at a Valley City hospital and released after the Wednesday afternoon accident.
 
     Authorities say 30-year-old Jeff Powers of Moorhead, Minnesota, was eastbound on the highway using cruise control when he fell asleep and the pickup drifted onto the south shoulder. Powers was not hurt.
 
     The crash remains under investigation.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The Annual JunKin CuZins, Junkyard Expo and Fleamarket is set for Saturday July 16, 2016, from 9-a.m., to 2-p.m., at the Stutsman County Fairgrounds.

On Wednesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSI Cable 2, Debbie Clemens said there is no gate admission for the public.

Enter the fairgrounds at the south gate.

She adds that this year those attending may bring a non-parishable food item to drop off at the fleamarket, which will be donated to the Community Action, Region Six Food Pantry.

She pointed out that JunKin CuZins is six local, talented ladies who like to re-purpose, upscale, and re-do unique items and furniture.

She said there will be lots of finished items as well as raw materials for others to re-finish.

The Fleamarket consists of 60 vendors, offering a variety of merchandise and goods.

This year there will be a bakery from the individual that provides baked goods to the JBROS fleamarket in Jamestown.

Also, food vendors will offer doughnuts, grilled foods, and a vendor offering smoothies.

Vendors are local and come from as far away as Bemidji, Langdon, North Dakota, Bemidji, and Fergus Falls, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

She adds, that each year the attendance has been growing.

Debbie pointed out that the annual Carrington Junkfest is set for September 10, 2016.

Heartland President Luther Dietrich says, “We’ll have greater opportunities to provide solutions for multiple ingredient needs and to expand into new markets domestically and internationally.”

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A group that funds developers of North Dakota farm products will consider grant requests totaling more than $1.2 million at its quarterly meeting next week in Medora.
 
     The Agricultural Products Utilization Commission will review 13 requests on Monday.
 
     Among the groups making requests is Spiritwood Ingredients of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, which is requesting $52,500 to develop and construct a barley processing plant Aat the Spiritwood Energy Park, for use in the fish farming industry.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The creator of the World’s Largest Buffalo Statue in Jamestown, Elmer Petersen, will be at the Jamestown Arts Center’s gallery for a lunch program titled “Whatever Happened to Elmer Petersen?” at noon Wednesday, July 20, 2016. Petersen is still active as a sculptor.

Those attending may bring their own lunch or have one prepared by the Arts Center for $5.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Human Services Department has expanded the number of regional human service centers that offer mental health and substance abuse assessments without appointments.
 
     The South Central Human Service Center in Jamestown is the third center to change how it provides mental health and addiction assessments. Residents of the nine-county service region can come in for unscheduled assessments during certain times on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

SCHSC Regional Director and clinical psychologist Dan Cramer said, “We hope we can prevent crises and significantly reduce no-shows. This will also allow us to serve new clients more quickly and manage staffing more efficiently.”

People seeking assessment services at SCHSC can go to the center at 520 Third Street N.W., in Jamestown during Open Access hours, or they can call the center at 701-253-6300, toll-free 800-260-1310, ND Relay TTY at 800-366-6888, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to schedule an assessment.

Fees for some services are adjusted for income, ability to pay, and the number of household members. Insurance is accepted if available.

     In February, North Central Human Service Center in Minot began offering the unscheduled assessments on certain days at certain times. Northwest Human Service Center in Williston launched the unscheduled assessments last fall.
 
     Officials say the goal is to increase access to behavioral health services and engage people in treatment earlier.

 

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Gov. Jack Dalrymple has called a special session of the North Dakota Legislature to address shortfalls in the state treasury.
 
     Dalrymple made the announcement Wednesday after a new revenue forecast on the same day showed tax collections continuing to decline due to depressed oil and farm commodity prices.
 
     The session is slated to begin Aug. 2 and will run for at least three days.
 
     Dalrymple in February ordered state agencies to make immediate cuts and raided the state’s rainy day fund to make up for about $1.1 billion in shortfalls for the current two-year budget cycle. Tax collections since then are down an additional $100 million.
 
     North Dakota’s Constitution allows the governor to call a special session for “extraordinary occasions.” The governor’s action is the fifteenth time a special session has been called since statehood.

 

 

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Investigators say a fire that destroyed a mobile home in Grand Forks and killed three pets started in the kitchen.
 
     A neighbor reported the fire Tuesday night. The family was not home at the time. Two cats and a dog died.
 
     Fire officials say a stove burner was left on in the kitchen, and it ignited combustible materials on top of the stove. The flames then spread to cabinets and walls.
 
     Investigators have ruled the fire accidental.

 

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A man who told investigators he was the largest powdered fentanyl dealer in the United States has been sentenced to life in prison.
 Brandon Hubbard, of Portland, Oregon, was tried in federal court in North Dakota because prosecutors said the drugs he sold over the internet resulted in two overdose deaths in the Grand Forks area. Hubbard was ordered to pay more than $17,000 to families of the victims.
 In a rare move, a judge said another hearing would be held later to discuss whether to reduce the length of the prison sentence. That’s because Wednesday’s sentencing hearing was moved up to allow Hubbard to have surgery for a shoulder injury.
 The investigation into the case led authorities to identify overdose victims in North Dakota, North Carolina and Oregon.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Authorities will consider criminal charges against a Fargo woman who threatened to shoot her neighbors and police officers. Officers with assault rifles responded to the home about 9 p.m. Wednesday. They determined there was no threat and left the woman in the care of family about two hours later. Lt. Chris Helmick says the woman who is believed to be in her 50s was drunk and upset for personal reasons.?

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A task force looking at possible changes to North Dakota’s open records laws is considering whether the attorney general should be able to penalize government agencies that hold illegal private meetings or don’t share records.

The group of lawyers, newspaper editors and law officers is formulating draft legislation to be considered by lawmakers next year. The task force is seeking to update laws for the digital age and deal with some controversial open records issues.

Media attorney Jack McDonald says some agencies repeatedly break the rules with little punishment.

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem acknowledges that lack of enforcement power is a common complaint. But he says he’s never had an agency refuse to comply with a formal opinion issued by his office.

Jamestown (CSi)  University of Jamestown head men’s track and field coach Ed Crawford announces the signing of Andrew Hornung, who will join the Jimmies in the fall of 2016.

Hornung, a 2016 graduate of Jamestown High School, is the son of Deb and Dan Hornung. He plans to major in business.

Crawfored says, “I’m really excited to have Andrew choose UJ to continue his education,” said Crawford. “In high school, he was a fantastic student with excellent grades, which is the type of young man I want in my program. Andrew will run the 400 meters with the possibility of the 800. He has untapped potential, as in high school he competed in football, baseball, baseball and track and field. Now that he will just do track I know he will reach his potential and become a great 400 runner for us.”

 

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Two new members are set to be inducted into the North Dakota Fishing Hall of Fame.
 
     The Minot Daily News reports that Jason Mitchell of Devils Lake and Terry Fleck of Bismarck will be honored during a ceremony Thursday at the city auditorium in Garrison. The event will be conducted prior to the rules meeting for the Governor’s Cup Walleye Derby.
 
     Mitchell is a longtime fishing and hunting guide on Devils lake and runs one of the largest open water guide services in the country. His television show, “Jason Mitchell Outdoors,” has been a fixture for outdoors enthusiasts.
 
     Fleck has been a leading advocate for fishing and recreation on the Lake Sakakawea and Missouri River systems. He has been chairman of the Friends of Lake Sakakawea since 2006.

 MANKATO, Minn. (AP) – Minnesota State, Minnesota has applied for membership in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference and is considering leaving the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
 
     MSU President Richard Davenport said Wednesday the school wanted to be “proactive in seeking what’s best for the University.” While he said the school’s relationship with the WCHA remains strong, Davenport said MSU believes that “now is the right time to consider all conference affiliation options” for the Mavericks hockey team.
 
     He calls the application to the NCHC “a very preliminary step.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) – LeBron James won five trophies, including best male athlete and best NBA player, at the ESPY Awards Wednesday night when frivolity gave way to a James-led call to end gun violence and racial profiling.
 
     The show honoring the year’s best athletes and sports moments opened on a somber note, with James and fellow NBA stars Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade standing four abreast on stage addressing the recent shootings of blacks by white police officers.
 
     Paul, the nephew of a police officer, recited the names of several men who have been fatally shot. Wade urged a stop to racial profiling, a shoot-to-kill mentality and “not seeing the value of black and brown bodies.”
 
     James urged his fellow pros to educate themselves and renounce violence while using their resources and time to help strengthen and rebuild their communities.

     TROON, Scotland (AP) – The 145th British Open is underway at Royal Troon.
 
     Colin Montgomerie hit the opening tee shot. Widely considered the best player to have never won a major, Montgomerie qualified at age 53 for what likely will be his last Open.
 
     The defending champion is Dustin Johnson, who made a 30-foot birdie putt in regulation for a 66 and won the four-hole aggregate playoff over Louis Oosthuizen (WUHST’-hy’-zehn) and Marc Leishman. Jordan Spieth (speeth) was in contention for his third straight major until he bogeyed the next-to-last hole and came inches from a birdie putt on 18 to miss the playoff by one shot.
 
     Americans have won the claret jug the last six times at Royal Troon.

 MONT VENTOUX, France (AP) – The wind is blowing at 125 kph (nearly 80 mph) on Mont Ventoux as the peloton sets out for the weather-shortened Stage 12 of the Tour de France, which coincides with Bastille Day.
 
     The wind, combined with a temperature just above the freezing level on top of the “Giant of Provence,” forced organizers to move the finish line of Thursday’s stage six kilometers (3.7 miles) down the road to the Chalet Reynard.
 
     It’s now a 178-kilometer (111-mile) leg beginning in Montpellier.
 
     Lotto-Soudal teammates Andre Greipel and Thomas De Gendt are part of a 13-man breakaway early in the stage with a lead of nearly 10 minutes on the pack.
 
     Overall leader Chris Froome was the stage winner when the Tour last scaled Ventoux’s barren, 1,909-meter (6,263-foot) peak in 2013.

 NEW YORK (AP) – Tom Brady is going to need a “Hail, Mary” effort to get his four-game “Deflategate” suspension lifted after an appeals court refused to give him a new hearing.  That upheld a lower court ruling that affirmed NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s (guh-DEHLZ’) power to levy the four-game suspension.  Brady’s only remaining option is to appeal to the Supreme Court.

Today, his campaign and GOP officials are working out the rules for next week’s national convention in Cleveland. They’re determined to stop renegades from derailing Trump’s nomination.
 
     UNDATED (AP) – President Barack Obama continues to focus on reducing tensions between police and the public when he holds a nationally televised town hall today. After meeting yesterday with elected officials, law enforcement and community activists, Obama acknowledged that tensions between police and the communities they serve could go on “for quite some time.” Today, the family of a black man shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop in Minnesota last week will hold his funeral.
 
     LONDON (AP) – New British Prime Minister Theresa May is clearing her rivals from government as she puts together her new Cabinet team. May has fired Justice Secretary Michael Gove, a former leader of the campaign for Britain to leave the European Union. Gove led the “leave” side alongside former London Mayor Boris Johnson, then betrayed him by making a bid for Conservative leadership – a job Johnson had long sought. Now Johnson has been made foreign secretary.
 
     BEIRUT (AP) – Syrian President Bashar Assad is denying that his forces targeted U.S.-born journalist Marie Colvin, who was killed in Syria in 2012. In an interview with NBC News, Assad says he doesn’t know how Colvin died. Assad was asked to comment on a lawsuit filed by Colvin’s relatives in U.S. federal court claiming that Syrian government officials targeted and killed Colvin.
 
     LONDON (AP) – Being too heavy may take years off your life. Scientists say they’ve conducted the largest-ever such analysis, and they’ve found that overweight people can lose a year of life on average. And moderately overweight people can lose 3 years of life. The study also found that being obese is far more dangerous for men than for women.
