Jamestown (CSi) The 3rd Annual Ride To Silence The Stigma was held Sunday starting at Stutsman Harley Davidson.
Event organizers and “Unite to Silence the Stigma” Jamestown Chapter point out that the Ride raises dollars for the local organization to help raise awareness and eliminate the stigma associated with mental health issues to prevent loss to suicide.
Chairperson Margo Haut says, the number of registered Participants was 155 with 127 Bikes raising $5,237 thus far;
The organization is anticipating more funds and the Jamestown Chapter is very grateful to everyone.
They thank the three major sponsors of Stutsman Harley Davidson, Newman Signs and IDK.
Margo adds, the money we raise this year will go toward education, awareness and future events in Jamestown that will bring mental health issues out of the darkness and into the light.
Margo said that local mental health and suicide prevention resources are available through the South Central Human Service Center in Jamestown.
Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) announces the date of this year’s Garden Tour as Wednesday, July 20, 2016 4-8 pm.
This will be the twenty-seventh tour sponsored by AAUW. Featured gardens this year include:

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) has re-opened their used bookstore at the Buffalo Mall.
On The Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Kelly Krein pointed out that the new location is across from the previous location now, next to the fabric shop.
For the remainder of July the store is open on Friday July 29th, from 11-a.m., to 2-p.m., and Saturdays July 30th and August 13th and 27th.
Otherwise the bookstore is open Thursdays from 11-a.m., to 2-p.m., with a variety of used books with a range of prices starting as low as 25-cents, with average of $1 to $4. Other books may be more depending on the type and age of the book.
She pointed out that reference books old than the year 2000 are not accept, nor are books in poor condition, which may be recycled.
Used books can be dropped off in the bin in front of the store, or when the store is open or make arrangements to drop off large amounts.
The used bookstore proceeds go to the AAUW’s continued support of the Jamestown Arts Center, the University of Jamestown, the Alfred Dickey Public Library, the Frontier Village School House, and other community programs.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – More than 900,000 flea beetles that eat leafy spurge were distributed during recent field days in Billings, Grant and Stutsman counties.
Leafy spurge is one of North Dakota’s most problematic weeds. The state Agriculture Department and county weed boards set up the field days so people with spurge problems can collect the bugs from established populations.
Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says the beetles have proven to be an effective biological control tool.
Other options to combat leafy spurge include herbicide application, sheep or goat grazing and cultivation.
WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A 74-year-old Fargo man was not seriously injured when the minivan he was driving crashed into a car wash business in West Fargo.
Authorities say the vehicle and the building suffered extensive damage Sunday night. The driver told police that the vehicle’s brakes locked up, causing him to swerve into the building.
He was treated for undisclosed injuries at a hospital and released. No other injuries were reported.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A man accused of using his pickup truck, boots and a knife to assault one man and kill another on the Spirit Lake Reservation will remain jailed until trial.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Alice Senechal rejected a defense request to allow Dallas Thundershield to be moved to a private home or a halfway house, with monitoring. She based her decision on the alleged crime and Thundershield’s criminal history of assault and escape.
The federal public defender’s office declined comment.
Thundershield is accused of killing Richard Demarce Sr. and injuring Elvis Demarce in an April 9 fight that began while the three were driving around with Thundershield’s girlfriend. Authorities haven’t elaborated on the nature of the argument.
Thundershield has pleaded not guilty to murder and assault. He’s to stand trial in September.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Charges are pending against a Mandan police officer accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home in neighboring Bismarck.
The 29-year-old man was arrested Saturday afternoon, and fired from his job with the police department.
Authorities allege the man forced his way into his ex-girlfriend’s home Saturday morning by breaking through a door leading from an attached garage into the home. It was unclear if anything was taken.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A man accused of distributing a heroin substance in the Fargo area that led to two overdoses in April has pleaded guilty.
Gregory Krutsinger, of Moorhead, Minnesota, is charged in federal court with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance resulting in serious bodily injury. The charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
An affidavit says Krutsinger is responsible for distributing drugs that are “harming people and even causing death.”
Law enforcement officials and other community members have been conducting public forums over the summer warning people about the increase in opioid overdoses and deaths.
Sentencing for Krutsinger is set for Oct. 4.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Minnesota man who walked away from a Fargo halfway house has pleaded guilty in federal court.
Chad Sumner is charged with escape. Authorities say he was serving the last few months of a three-year sentence for child endangerment when he fled from Centre, Inc. on Jan 16. He was scheduled to be released from custody on March 2.
Court documents show that Sumner cut the strap from his electronic monitoring device and threw it in a garbage bin at a Fargo gas station. He was arrested in Red Lake, Minnesota, on Feb. 8.
The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 4 in Fargo.
WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) – Officials have scheduled a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Wahpeton’s new elementary school next month.
The event is slated for Monday, Aug. 15, at 5:30 p.m.
The school is part of an education complex scheduled to open in the fall.
Demolition of the former elementary school is expected to occur in early October.
BURLINGTON, N.D. (AP) – Residents of Burlington over the weekend celebrated their recovery from the 2011 Souris River flood.
Events included a parade, meals, an all-faiths church service and a street dance.
The town of about 1,200 people near Minot was hit hard by flooding five years ago. Officials since have removed a number of houses near the river, built new homes, repaired dikes and restored a flooded sports complex.
Former mayor Jerome Gruenberg says the recovery celebration had a good turnout, and “was a good feeling.”
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – The 51st North Dakota State Fair gets underway later this week at the State Fairgrounds on the east edge of Minot.
The fair’s nine-day run begins Friday, with the 35th annual State Parade set for Saturday morning. This year’s grand marshal is Major League Baseball umpire and North Dakota native Gary Cederstrom.
The fair will have the usual carnival rides, food vendors, animal shows, 4-H exhibits and musical entertainment. Grandstand acts this year include country superstar Kenny Chesney and rock legend KISS.
More than 300,000 people attended last year’s State Fair.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Former Minnesota Gov. Wendell Anderson, a Democrat who was seen as embodying his state when he posed for an iconic Time magazine cover only to lose public confidence by arranging his own appointment to the U.S. Senate, has died. He was 83.
Gov. Mark Dayton’s office says Anderson died Sunday in hospice care in St. Paul.
Anderson was elected governor in 1970. Time featured the handsome former Olympic hockey player in a glowing 1973 story about Minnesota, calling him “a Midwestern Kennedy.” At the height of his popularity in 1974, Anderson beat his Republican challenger by better than a 2-to-1 margin.
Anderson’s downfall was taking the Senate seat of newly elected Vice President Walter Mondale in 1976. Voters never forgave him for claiming Mondale’s seat by appointment, a move that required him to quit as governor. Voters decisively rejected Anderson in favor of Republican Rudy Boschwitz in 1978.

Valley City (CSi, VCSU) – The NAIA National Office has announced that 12 Valley City State University athletic teams have earned the NAIA Scholar-Team Award.
For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar-Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution. The team grade point average includes all eligible varsity student-athletes.
Twelve of Valley City State’s 14 athletic teams received the award. Among North Star Athletic Association teams, VCSU had the highest percentage of its teams earn the honor.
VCSU, University of Jamestown and Waldorf University all had 12 of their teams named NAIA Scholar-Teams, which was the top number in the NSAA.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – The number of neighborhood baseball diamonds in Minot, North Dakota has dwindled due to building projects and indifference in the community.
The Minot Daily News reports that a sign where children used to gather on a small baseball diamond located near Roosevelt School reads: “This field is not for baseball.”
Two diamonds on the playground of the former Washington Elementary School have been swiped for a building project. A once popular baseball field at Edison Elementary has been converted into a parking lot. And three diamonds at the former Ramstad Middle School are overgrown with weeds and unusable.
Todd Larson, who coached the Minot Vistas American Legion baseball team for 16 years, says it’s disappointing to see that local residents aren’t taking the opportunity to play the sport.

LOUDON, N.H. (AP) – Matt Kenseth claimed his second Sprint Cup victory of the year by pulling away down the stretch at New Hampshire Motor Speedway yesterday. Kenseth earned his 38th career win after Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch each led more than 120 laps. Tony Stewart was second, followed by Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick and Greg Biffle.

TORONTO (AP) – Will Power finished first in the IndyCar street race in Toronto his third win this season. A caution with four laps remaining set up one final restart on the temporary course at Exhibition Place. Power got a great start to pull away from teammate Helio Castroneves (EHL’-ee-oh cas-troh-NEHV’-us) to give Penske a 1-2 sweep.
GOLF…
TROON, Scotland (AP) – Henrik Stenson set or tied several major championship records in earning a victory in the British Open at Royal Troon. Stenson tied Johnny Miller with a final-round 63, and his 20-under 264 broke the total scoring record for a major tournament. Phil Mickelson closed with a 65 to finish 17 under in his 11th runner-up performance at a major.
OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) – Aaron Baddeley sank a 24-foot putt on the fourth playoff hole to beat Si Woo Kim and win the PGA’s Barbasol Championship on Sunday at Grand National.
Baddeley finished with a 5-under 66 to match Kim at 18-under 266. Kim shot a 63 but closed with a bogey.
SYLVANIA, Ohio (AP) – Lydia Ko claimed her fourth LPGA Tour victory of the season by outlasting Ariya Jutanugarn and Mirim Lee in a four-hole playoff at the Marathon Classic in Ohio.
The top-ranked Ko made a 10-foot birdie putt on the final extra hole to close out her 14th LPGA Tour title. She was 14 under through regulation.

BERN, Switzerland (AP) – Colombian rider Jarlinson Pantano won the brutal 15th stage of the Tour de France through the Jura mountains after a long breakaway. Race leader Chris Froome finished slightly more than three minutes behind in a group that included all other contenders.
Etixx-Quickstep teammates Julian Alaphilippe and Tony Martin are in an early breakaway during the 16th stage of the Tour de France, which is crossing into Switzerland midway through the leg.
The duo has a 1-minute lead 25 kilometers (16 miles) into the rolling 209-kilometer (130-mile) stage from Moirans-en-Montagne to the Swiss capital of Bern.
Defending champion Chris Froome is wearing the yellow jersey with a comfortable lead of 1 minute, 47 seconds over Dutch rider Bauke Mollema.
The hilly stage could favor a breakaway or a selective sprint.
A minute of silence was held at the start of the stage to pay tribute to the 84 victims of the truck attack in Nice. It’s the third of three days of national mourning in France following the Bastille Day attack.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The United States has been eliminated by Croatia in the Davis Cup quarterfinals. Marin Cilic beat John Isner and Borna Coric knocked off Jack Sock yesterday after the Croatians won Saturday’s doubles match. It’s the fourth time in 161 the Americans have lost when taking the first two matches of a Davis Cup round.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – The Warriors have re-signed center Anderson Varejao (VAR’-eh-zhoh), who averaged 2.6 points and 2.3 rebounds in 22 games after signing with Golden State last February. The 33-year-old Brazilian has averaged 7.4 points and 7.3 boards over 613 career NBA games.

CLEVELAND (AP) – The Republican National Convention is set to kick off today as presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump’s triumph, but not before opponents try to take a last-gasp swipe at the billionaire businessman. Insurgent delegates say they will try to force a state-by-state vote – a move that could disrupt floor proceedings and also try to change a rule that binds delegates to their candidate on the first ballot.
BRUSSELS (AP) – Turkey’s response to a failed coup is sending shudders through the European Union and the United States. Turkey is being warned that it must uphold democracy and human rights as it pursues the military officers and anyone else involved in the plot. The EU has also said Turkey’s application could be scuttled if it revives the death penalty.
MSAKEN, Tunisia (AP) – French officials say they can’t confirm a statement by the uncle of the truck driver who killed 84 people in Nice, France, that his nephew had contact with an Algerian member of the Islamic State group who indoctrinated him. IS claimed responsibility for last week’s attack, though Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve (ka-zeh-NUV’) says there’s no sign of links between IS and the attacker.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – State police spokesman Major Doug Cain says investigators aren’t ready yet to flatly declare the gunman in Baton Rouge, Louisiana acted alone. Police say the former Marine who had been honorably discharged was the only shooter but investigators are still checking to see if he had help along the way.
LONDON (AP) – A powerful but pricey symbol of Britain’s military status is on the line today as lawmakers are due to vote on whether to replace the country’s fleet of four nuclear-armed submarines. Support for the plan to build new subs is said to be strong, and involves thousands of unionized jobs.
