Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Area Grief Support Team is offering a grief support group for anyone who is grieving the loss of someone important to them, whether the loss is recent or from years past. The group will meet once a week at 7:00 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 424 1st Ave South in Jamestown beginning on Thursday, August 11th, 2016 and will run for 6 weeks.
In his book, Understanding Your Grief, internationally recognized expert in the field of loss and grief, Dr. Alan Wolfelt states, “You can benefit from a connectedness that comes from people who have also had a death in their lives. Support groups, where people come together and share the common bond of experience, can be invaluable in helping you and your grief and supporting your need to mourn long after the event of the death”
In our fast paced society, people who have had a significant loss are often expected to be ‘over it’ in a matter of a few weeks. They may even expect this of themselves. In reality, it may take years for someone to work through his or her grief. The support group experience allows individuals to express grief in their own unique way and on their own unique timetable.
The group is free of charge, however, participants are asked to register to ensure that enough materials are available. Participants should plan to attend all six sessions. For more information, or to register, please call Charlotte at 701-952-9358 or Kathy at 701-952-8001 or 701-659-8001.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A small plane made a successful emergency landing at the Bismarck airport after experiencing mechanical problems.
The Highway Patrol says the 1975 single-engine Cessna was traveling from Bismarck to Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, on Sunday evening when it began having electrical problems.
The pilot decided to land at the Valley City airport but couldn’t get the landing gear to lock, so he returned to Bismarck. The plane then experienced complete electrical failure, and was forced to land on its belly at the Bismarck airport.
Fifty-four-year-old pilot Peter Weisbeck and 53-year-old passenger Thressa Essler were not hurt. Both are from Bismarck.
The plane suffered damage to its undercarriage and a wing.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A federal judge in North Dakota has granted a fifth trial delay for a flight attendant accused of disrupting SkyWest flights in the upper Midwest and on the East Coast last year.
Justin Cox-Sever’s attorney asked for more time to prepare, and prosecutors didn’t object. Judge Daniel Hovland moved the Arizona man’s trial from early August to early October, in Bismarck.
The trial originally was scheduled for last December. All of the delays have come after the defense asked for more preparation time.
A prosecutor says he still thinks a plea deal is likely, and Cox-Sever’s attorney says all options are on the table.
Cox-Sever is accused of making bogus bomb threats on a flight from Charlottesville, Virginia, to Chicago, and on a flight from Minneapolis to Dickinson, North Dakota.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Supreme Court has rejected the appeal of a man convicted in 2005 for beating a man to death with a hammer.
David Hieb was sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit felony murder. He was one of three men charged in the case.
Hieb argued that his conviction should be reversed because he pleaded guilty to a charge that is not a crime.
The state countered that Hieb lost his right to challenge when he voluntarily pleaded guilty his appeal was not filed within the two-year statute of limitations.
THOMPSON, N.D. (AP) – Voters in the Thompson school district will once again decide the fate of a school expansion and renovation project.
The vote next month will be the fourth time residents have voted on the issue since 2012, and the second time this year.
School officials say enrollment has risen every year since 2008, to nearly 500 students. The proposed $10 million project will include new classrooms and other improvements.
If the vote fails again, the issue can’t be placed on the ballot for another year, under state law.

The Hunger Free ND Garden Project is now in its seventh year generating fresh produce for food pantries, shelters and charitable feeding groups.
Goehring says hunger is a problem even in a state that produces so much food. He says the Great Plains Food Bank served 11.2 million meals in 2015. He says about a third of those needing help are children.
Information about the Hunger Free ND Garden Project including drop-off points for produce can be found on the Agriculture Department website, at www.nd.gov/ndda .
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – The legal team for imprisoned American Indian activist Leonard Peltier is hoping President Barack Obama will grant his release before he leaves office.
Peltier is serving two life sentences for the 1975 shooting deaths of two FBI agents during a standoff on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. He’s now 71 and in frail health, and his next parole hearing isn’t until 2024.
Peltier and his supporters say he was framed – a claim the FBI denies. He’s unsuccessfully appealed his conviction numerous times, and former President Bill Clinton left office without acting on a clemency request.
Peltier’s legal team recently filed a clemency petition with Obama. Attorney Cynthia Dunne says the team hopes Obama will “look at the case with fresh eyes.”

The Viper Demo Team will perform several maneuvers to show the unique capabilities of the F-16 Fighting Falcon, which is considered one of the Air Force’s premier multi-role fighters.
The base says attendees will also get to see the Smoke-n-Thunder Jet Car accelerate to speeds approaching 400 mph, as well as a helicopter demonstration.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot officials are planning to turn a once-contaminated landfill into a recreation area.
About 60 acres of land that once was on the federal Superfund list of major pollution sites will be repurposed into a variety of activity areas. Ideas include a cross country course, mountain bike trail and disc golf course.
The land around the Maysa Arena once was home to the 26-acre Minot Landfill. It operated from 1961 to 1971 and received shipments of municipal and industrial waste including oil drums, spent battery casings and lime sludge. The operations contaminated groundwater, surface water, soil and air with hazardous chemicals.
The area eventually was cleaned up, and the Environmental Protection Agency took it off the Superfund program’s National Priorities List in 1997.
DUNSEITH, N.D. (AP) – A new sculpture is being dedicated at the International Peace Garden.
The 6-foot stainless steel sculpture is being dedicated on Sunday. The sculpture depicts a dove being released from a pair of human hands.
The 2,300-acre garden that straddles the U.S.-Canada border north of the North Dakota city of Dunseith is a tribute to the longstanding peace between the two countries. It gets funding from both sides of the border.
The $80,000 sculpture was installed last month. It’s designed to last for centuries.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A booth at the North Dakota State Fair in Minot is trying to teach visitors how to properly lock, monitor and dispose of prescription medications.
The North Dakota Department of Human Services says the booth is part of the “Stop Overdose” campaign.
The department says access to prescription medications “is a crucial risk factor relating to the abuse of and addiction to prescription opioid pain relievers and heroin.”
People visiting the booth will get to learn how to keep medications out of sight and in a safe and secure place, as well as where to drop off unused medications.
The department says the booth’s resources also address the “significant role” that parents have in preventing the misuse and abuse of prescription drugs by their children
The fair runs through Saturday.
MEDORA, N.D. (AP) – Author and environmental activist Terry Tempest Williams will speak Sunday at Theodore Roosevelt National Park in Medora.
The park says Williams will read portions of her most recent book “The Hour of Land” beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the South Unit Visitor Center.
Williams has a long history of advocating for protection of Utah’s wild spaces. In February, she purchased development rights on a small stretch of land in that state during a federal oil-and-gas lease auction. At the time, she said she purchased the lease rights to shine a light on the negative effects of climate change.
Williams is also the author of “Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place,” “Finding Beauty in a Broken World” and “When Women Were Birds.”
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Bismarck family is undertaking a unique scavenger hunt this summer: They’re searching out all the urban green space in the city.
Casey Jacobson is trying to visit every playground in the city. That’s 47, scattered across 32 city parks.
Her partner in adventure is her 3-year-old son, Gus, and they’ve made it about a third of the way. Husband Chad Kuntz comes along when he can, but it’s more often special bonding time for mother and son.
Jacobson has used the city’s parks website to make sure she’s not overlooking any of the city’s lesser-used green spaces. And she’s sent pictures of some of her adventures to a contest.
