Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Public Works Department informs motorists that beginning this morning July 28, 2016, the intersection of 4th St NE & 5th Ave NE will be closed for street/utility repairs. The intersection will be closed until necessary repairs are completed.

5th Ave NE (Hwy 20) & 4th St NE will remain open to south bound traffic to 1st Ave (Hwy 281).

Traffic/Detour signage will be posted as necessary to re-route traffic.

Motorists and other traffic should use extreme caution when entering detoured areas. The public should consider alternate routes if possible.

 

Jamestown  (CSi)  The Jamestown Fire Department was called Wednesday just after 5-p.m., to a car fire at the Hillcrest Municipal Golf Course parking lot.

Jamestown City  Fire Chief Jim Reuther says the fire damaged the car’s engine compartment.

No injuries reported.

The cause was not immediately dtermined.

Five city fire units and 26 firefighters were on the scene about a half hour. 

 

 

Jamestown  (CSi-JRMC) Jamestown Regional Medical Center (JRMC) will host an Anniversary event to celebrate 5yrs of service in our new facility and accomplishments. JRMC “Thrivin 5” Anniversary will be held on Thursday, July 28, from 4-7pm. The celebration will be held at JRMC and is open to the community.

The celebration will have department booths, hands on activities, self-guided tours, provider meet and greets, and refreshments.  Guest speakers will be North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp, and Senator John Hoeven.

JRMC Clinic specialists will be welcoming attendees at the event, giving the community an opportunity to meet our clinic team. The project, will be adding about 24 private rooms with in-room shower facilities.

It includes converting double rooms to single rooms, with then, 76 private rooms, with the cost estimated between $3 million and $4 million.

Other plans include more food choices, more flexible menus, and different menu items, and enlarging the current dining space, in a restaurant-like dining environment.

Other plans include a new phone system and installing new wall coverings.

Recently the campaign to construct the new chapel, and the McCoy Family hospice suite was completed.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A new housing study predicts North Dakota’s population will grow to 891,000 people by 2029.

North Dakota Housing Finance Agency Executive Director Jolene Kline told the state Industrial Commission on Tuesday that the 20 percent population increase will continue to put pressure on affordable housing for low-income residents.

Kline told the panel that North Dakota’s economy is still strong, despite a downturn in oil and crop prices.

The state Housing Finance Agency commissioned the study done by North Dakota State University researchers. The study says North Dakota’s urban centers will see the most growth.

Kline says the region that includes Jamestown and Valley City is the only area where the population is predicted to decline by 2029.  She says the Devils Lake area is forecast to remain flat.

 

Washington (CSi) Senator John Hoeven, who serves on the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, has announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Aviation Administration has awarded two grants totaling $166,500 to the Rugby Municipal Airport Authority and the Jamestown Regional Airport Authority.

The funds are awarded as follows:

· Jamestown Regional Airport Authority – $81,000 – To fund a wildlife hazard assessment and plan to identify and mitigate wildlife species that have been observed in the area.

· Rugby Municipal Airport Authority – $85,500 – To fund the design of the full rehabilitation of Runway 12/30’s lighting system, which requires rehabilitation in order to enhance safe airfield operations during low visibility conditions. The funds will also go towards maintaining the structural integrity of the pavement on Runway 12/30, Taxiway A and the apron.

Hoeven says, “It’s important to invest in projects that help to ensure the safety of passengers and pilots in North Dakota’s airports. Today’s grants will support projects aimed at doing just that at Rugby Municipal and Jamestown Regional Airports.”

Meanwhile….

Jamestown Regional Airport is being studied as an additional location for Valley Med Flight air ambulance operations from Grand Forks.

The company is looking at if it should purchase a hangar on airport property. The offered purchase agreement is $210,000.

Jamestown Airport Manager Sam Seafeldt says the business would create jobs in the area, with four FT pilots, four FT air EMTs, one FT helicopter mechanic, two PT air EMT’s.

A decision on the project is expected next month.

 

 

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Arts Center is hosting a Special Presentation, by Guillermo “Memo” Guadia

As part of Memo’s artist fellowship he received from North Dakota Council on the Arts, he will be presenting about his artwork and what it has been like to be a studio artist over the last year. Memo left his position at the Museum of Art in Grand Forks last year to become a full-time studio artist.

Memo has been working out of Muddy Waters Clay studio in Grand Forks developing a large body of sculpture pieces. Most of his works are inspired by his Peruvian culture, his life journey, and the current political climate. Family friendly. Free and open to the public. Feel free to bring a sack lunch.

Memo is in Jamestown all week teaching summer ceramics for children.

 

Valley City (CSi) The Fargo-Moorhead Derby Girls and the Rock City Riot Men’s Derby league are hosting a special co-ed roller derby mixer in Valley City on Saturday, July 30, 2016, at the Valley City Youth Complex, at 940 Central Avenue, North. Doors open at 5-p.m. with the bout getting underway at 5:30-p.m

“SkateWars,” is a coed mixer with a Star Wars theme.

Those attending are invited to dress as their favorite Star Wars character.

The roller derby will help raise funds for the family of Jason Martis, who recently lost his cancer battle.

As a derby player he was called Sacre Bleu, and was a Star Wars fan, that inspired the theme.

Tickets are Adults $8, kids ages 6-12 are $5 and kids under 6 are free. A free-will donation for the Martis family will be accepted during the bout.

An after party event, will be open to the public at Boomers Corner Keg.

 

Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown Parks and Recreation Director, Doug Hogan says, Amy Walters has accepted an offer as the Two Rivers Activity Center (TRAC) Facilities Manager.

She was offered the job on Monday this week, unanimously approved by the Park Board. Hogan indicated that Walters’ experience and qualifications gave her an advantage over other applicants for the position, and will began her position in the latter half of August this year.

Walters, is Director of Student Services and School Health Coordinator for South East Educational Cooperative.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have identified a 63-year-old man who died after crashing into a bridge guard rail on Interstate 29 in southeastern North Dakota.
 
     The Highway Patrol said Wednesday that Dennis Herr of Fargo was traveling south in the northbound lanes, and his car drifted onto the shoulder and hit the guard rail about 6 miles south of Fargo.
 
     Herr died at the scene shortly after 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. He was alone in the car.
 
     The Highway Patrol says the crash remains under investigation.

 

 

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A Grand Forks man has been sentenced to serve 10 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of another man last fall.
 
     Thirty-seven-year-old Nicolas Peralez Jr. initially was charged with murder in the death last October of 31-year-old Joshua Neumann outside Neumann’s apartment. Peralez pleaded guilty last month to a reduced charge of manslaughter and was sentenced Wednesday.
 
     Court documents show that Peralez was given credit for nearly a year he’s already spent behind bars. Peralez will be eligible for parole in about seven years.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the possible shooting death of a horse.
 
     Sgt. Mike MacDonald says  horse was found dead July 17 in a pasture.
 
     He says a veterinarian helping in the investigation believes the horse may have been shot about four days earlier. MacDonald says a neighbor saw the horse alive on July 13.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Bismarck’s public works director says dealing with storm water problems on the city’s south side will require multiple projects and tens of millions of dollars.
 
     Michelle Klose says she’ll bring a plan to the City Commission next month to address the issue, which she calls “very complex.”
 
     Former City Commissioner Steve Schwab recently filed a complaint with the state Health Department, accusing the city of neglecting to address storm water problems and also sewer wastewater issues. City officials acknowledged flooding is an ongoing concern but said they’ve had no complaints about sewage.
 
     Schwab’s letter was signed by more than 40 people. Resident Russ Papke says he’s concerned about the safety of children and pets.
 
     Klose said any problems reported by residents will be addressed “right away.”

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A bridge connecting Grand Forks and East Grand Forks, Minnesota, has been cited as one of the top projects in the region.
 
     The $4.6 million Sorlie Bridge project was completed in 2015. The work included bridge rehabilitation, painting, modern lighting, pavement markings and other improvements. The bridge over the Red River remained open to motorists during construction.
 
     The project was entered in the “under budget, small project” category. It will next be considered to be among the top ten projects in the country.
 
     A total of 84 projects were nominated from 40 states.

 

  WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – The city of Williston has finalized land purchase agreements for a $240 million airport northwest of the oil patch hub, without having to forcefully take any land through eminent domain. Construction at the 1,540-acre site is to start this fall, with a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for Oct. 10. The new Williston Basin International Airport is expected to be operational in 2019.

 

 GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. (AP) – A major defense contractor and anchor tenant in the nation’s first unmanned aircraft business and technology park is up and flying in North Dakota. California-based General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. has opened a flight training academy in the Grand Sky drone park on the Grand Forks Air Force Base. Company officials signed a lease last fall and built a temporary hangar in order to start operations as quickly as possible.
 
     BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp missed the roll-call vote at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia because of “previous commitments.” A statement from Heitkamp’s office says she “strongly supports” presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. Sanders delegates have criticized Heitkamp for not endorsing the Vermont senator, who outpolled Clinton more than 2-to-1 at North Dakota caucus sites last month.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – More than 1,600 antlerless deer gun licenses remain after North Dakota’s deer gun lottery.
 
     Resident hunters who were unsuccessful in the first lottery can apply for the remaining licenses.
 
     The first lottery application process for deer gun, muzzleloader, youth and landowner licenses had more than 102,000 applicants, and more than 51,000 were unsuccessful.
 
     An option for unsuccessful applicants to apply online for remaining licenses will be available Aug. 3. Paper applications for remaining licenses will be mailed to individuals the week of Aug. 1. The deadline for applying is Aug. 24.

     GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Defending NCAA hockey champion North Dakota will host the 2018 U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game against archrival Minnesota at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
 
     UND announced Wednesday that the game will be played Saturday, October 27th, 2018. The announcement was made in Las Vegas, with Nevada Lieutenant Governor Mark Hutchison on hand.
 
     Fighting Hawks coach Brad Berry says the game will be fun for players and fans and hopefully will help grow college hockey in the western U.S.
 
     Tickets go on sale to the general public on February 10th, 2017.

     MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – An international soccer match next week at the Minnesota Vikings’ new stadium could set a soccer attendance record in Minnesota.
 
     More than 55,000 tickets already have been sold for the match, the first event at U.S. Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis.
 
     Chelsea will host A.C. Milan as part of the International Champions Cup on Wednesday, Aug. 3. Promoters say the match is on pace to break the all-time attendance record for soccer in Minnesota. That was set in 1978 when 46,370 fans filled the old Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington to watch the Minnesota Kicks play the New York Cosmos.
 
     U.S. Bank Stadium officially opened last Friday. Limited seats still remain for the soccer match.

     UNDATED (AP) – Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki has signed his contract.
 
     A person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press it’s a two-year, $50 million pact, 25 percent more than the original agreement.
 
     The 38-year-old star has spent all 18 of his seasons with Dallas.
 
  
   The Portland Trail Blazers have formally signed guard CJ McCollum to a four-year contract extension.  The terms of the deal were not disclosed by the team, but a person familiar with it told The Associated Press on Monday that it is worth $106 million. McCollum was named the NBA’s 2016 Most Improved Player after averaging 20.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists during the regular season.

     DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – The Daytona 500 is moving back to its traditional weekend in 2018.
 
     The race had been held on Presidents Day weekend from 1968 to 2011. But NASCAR officials tweaked the date beginning in 2012, anticipating changes to the NFL schedule. 

 
     CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – The crew chief for Kevin Harvick has been suspended by NASCAR for an improperly installed lug nut at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Rodney Childers will not appeal the one-race suspension or his $20,000 fine, keeping him out of the pits for Sunday’s race at Pocono Raceway.
 
     Childers is the fifth crew chief suspended over a lug nut rule instituted by NASCAR earlier this season.

After a procession of speakers that included a pair of presidents, it will be Clinton’s turn to make her own case for being elected in November. Last night, President Barack Obama declared there’s never been a man or a woman more qualified than Hillary Clinton to be president.
 
     PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is dismissing heavy Democratic criticism as “mostly false stuff.” Trump tells Fox News Channel, “You can’t let it get you down.” Trump ignited controversy yesterday when he encouraged Russia to find and make public missing emails deleted by his presidential opponent, Hillary Clinton.
 
     BIG SUR, Calif. (AP) – Firefighters battling a blaze near California’s Big Sur are bracing for hotter weather and lower humidity. The wildfire has destroyed 34 homes and killed a bulldozer driver. Cooler temperatures gave more than 3,000 fire crews working around the clock a much-needed break yesterday, but temperatures are expected to climb today.
 
     NEW YORK (AP) – The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is proposing the biggest overhaul of the debt collection industry in almost four decades. The proposed changes would restrict collectors from calling numerous times a day, require them to have more documentation on what’s owed, and give people more ability to dispute their bills.
 
     NEW YORK (AP) – Investigators are searching for a man who they say robbed a New York City bank while wearing a ball gown. The  man robbed the bank on Staten Island on Tuesday while wearing a silver and black dress with heels, a hat and sunglasses. He ditched the outfit and fled the scene in shorts, Nike Jordan sneakers and no shirt.
