MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A man accused of killing his brother at a Minot apartment is headed to trial next spring unless his defense can work out a plea agreement with prosecutors.
Twenty-six-year-old Adolfo Contreras-Castillo is accused of killing 28-year-old Ignacio Contreras-Castillo on March 1, and stabbing another brother in the hand.
He faces murder, terrorizing and aggravated assault counts and could face life in prison if convicted.
The defense and prosecution this week asked a judge for two weeks to try to reach a plea deal. If that doesn’t happen, Contreras-Castillo will go on trial next March or April. He’s being held on $2 million bond.
ISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Board of Higher Education will hire an independent third-party investigator to look into whether North Dakota State University President Dean Bresciani violated board policy.
The dispute centers around now-rescinded media guidelines for covering Bison athletics that were roundly criticized by journalists and on social media before they were scrapped.
Bresciani acknowledged earlier this week that some text messages he sent regarding the matter were “not appropriate.”
University System Vice Chancellor Linda Donlin says Bresciani met with Higher Education Board Chairwoman Kathleen Neset earlier this week and said he welcomed an investigation. The Associated Press requested comment from Bresciani on Friday.
The cost and timeline for an independent investigation aren’t known.

ERIE, Pa. (AP) — Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus (ryns PREE’-bus) has introduced Donald Trump at a campaign rally in the key battleground state of Pennsylvania. He told the crowd that Trump is “going to win” and is “going to save our country.” The appearance in Erie comes amid a series of bad polls for Trump and increased frustration among many Republicans about their nominee. Trump’s campaign has placed strong emphasis on winning Pennsylvania, which last went for a Republican candidate in 1988. But polls consistently show him trailing Hillary Clinton in the state.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Hillary Clinton’s campaign is hoping her release of her 2015 tax returns Friday will help undercut Donald Trump’s business records. Trump has broken with decades of presidential candidates by refusing to make his filings public. Democrats believe Trump’s returns could be a treasure trove of politically damaging information, such as a low tax rate and minimal charitable giving. The Clinton campaign says Clinton and her husband paid a federal tax rate of 34.2 percent last year and donated 9.8 percent of their income to charity.
