GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Authorities in Grand Forks are investigating three fires over the weekend that they have deemed suspicious.

The fires about 3 a.m. Sunday involved debris in an alleyway, a garbage bin in an alley about a block away, and a home in the area.

No injuries were reported. The amount of damage to the home was not immediately determined.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Plaintiffs in a lawsuit seeking to abolish North Dakota’s anti-corporate farming law are asking a judge to reject the state’s request for a more detailed complaint.

The North Dakota Farm Bureau, a Wisconsin dairy farmer and a dairy company in that state that seeks to expand into North Dakota sued in federal court in June. They want a federal judge to declare the law unconstitutional.

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem late last month asked the judge to order the plaintiffs to amend their complaint, saying it was so vague that his office couldn’t even respond to it.

Plaintiff’s attorney Sarah Andrews Herman disputes that assertion. She says the complaint is detailed and that arguments Stenehjem makes in his request show that he has enough information to file a response.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — New University of North Dakota President Mark Kennedy and his wife, Debbie, are leading new UND faculty and administrators on a bus tour of North Dakota this week.

The annual tour is in its 25th year, but it will be the first trip for the Kennedys. Former Minnesota Congressman Mark Kennedy took the reins at UND in July.

The tour Monday through Wednesday goes through Mayville, Carrington, Washburn, Bismarck, Medora, Oakes and Fargo-Moorhead. The goal is to introduce new UND staff to the state and give them a chance to develop professional relationships.
NEAR THE STANDING ROCK SIOUX RESERVATION, N.D. (AP) — Opponents of a $3.8 billion Midwest oil pipeline are vowing to keep up the pressure after this week’s arrests at a construction zone in North Dakota.

The Standing Rock Sioux had quietly opposed the Dakota Access pipeline for months at a “spirit camp” near their reservation, which straddles the North Dakota-South Dakota border.

Protesters’ resistance heated up this week as at least 18 people were arrested, and a Hollywood actress joined their gathering.

Tribal members say the pipeline would disturb sacred sites and could affect drinking water on the reservation and for people downstream.

The four-state pipeline’s path in North Dakota would cross beneath the Little Missouri River once and the Missouri River twice. The company said the pipeline would include safeguards such as leak detection equipment.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A Minnesota environmental group says it wants to testify in an appeal filed by opponents of a Red River diversion project around the Fargo metropolitan area.

The Richland-Wilkin Joint Power Authority is appealing a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources declaration that the project meets all legal requirements. The ruling has allowed diversion proponents to seek permits for the $2.1 billion project.

The opposition group represents about 20 upstream cities and townships in North Dakota and Minnesota. It wants the U.S Army Corps of Engineers to come up with a cheaper project that doesn’t flood farmland.

The Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy says it believes the DNR decision was “arbitrary and capricious” and eliminated alternatives that are more reasonable.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — Adding new art, benches, pedestrian lighting and landscaping in Mandan using money from a diesel spill settlement is under consideration.

More than $1 million remains in a trust fund resulting from a settlement with BNSF Railway.

While $15,000 in seed money is slated to draft a plan for the projects in Mandan, the full budget could total $750,000. The Mandan Supplemental Environmental Projects Trust approved the start-up funds.

Nearly $1.6 million remains in the trust fund.

Laurie Leingang of the Community Beautification Committee says the group will organize meetings to outline the proposal and seek input about the type of improvements citizens want.

In the past, the trust fund money was put toward park upgrades, parking and a fountain, among other uses.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A leading expert on overdose prevention and treatment is slated to speak at opioid conferences in North Dakota.

The state Department of Human Services is sponsoring symposiums in Fargo on Monday and Bismarck on Tuesday. The event will bring together media professionals, pharmacists, behavioral health providers, first responders, educators, policymakers, law enforcement authorities and public health workers.

The featured speaker will be Erin Winstanley, director of health services research at Mercy Health in Ohio and faculty member at the University of Cincinnati. She has been a lead investigator on federally-funded studies looking into overdose prevention and evidence-based treatment of opioid disorders.

NDSU says Teschuk finished 46th overall on Saturday.

The 21-year-old two-time Canadian national champion in the steeplechase was the sixth former Bison to compete in a summer Olympics, and only the second in the last 20 years.

Teschuk’s collegiate career included four first-team All-America honors in indoor track, two in outdoor track and one in cross country. She’s NDSU’s school record-holder in seven events. She turned pro this summer.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s early Canada goose hunting season gets underway Monday.

The season has a limit of 15 birds daily and 45 in possession. Shooting hours are half an hour before sunrise to sunset.

Residents need a $5 early Canada goose license and a general game and habitat license. Residents age 16 and older also need a small game license.

Nonresidents need only a $50 early Canada goose license, and it’s valid statewide without counting against the 14-day regular season license.

The season continues through Sept. 15, except in the Missouri River Zone, where it ends Sept. 7. The zone is along the Missouri River south of Garrison Dam.

WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The West Fargo Park District is celebrating the opening of a new $7.8 million recreation center.

OLYMPICS…

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Usain (yoo-SAYN’) Bolt captured gold in the men’s 100 by beating American Justin Gatlin to the finish line. The Jamaican blew down the straightaway in 9.81 seconds, eight-hundredths of a second faster than Gatlin. Bolt is the first person to win three straight Olympic 100-meter titles.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Simone Biles has become the first American female gymnast to win three gold medals in one Olympics, and the first to claim one on the vault.

Biles will head back from Rio de Janeiro with a least three golds after easily winning the women’s vault final. The Columbus, Ohio resident averaged 15.966 during her two vaults, well clear of silver medalist Maria Paseka of Russia.

Biles will have a chance at more gold later this week when she competes in the event finals on balance beam and floor exercise.

But the run of Olympic gold by the U.S. gymnastics team ended when Russia’s Aliya Mustafina edged American Madison Kocian in the uneven bars. Mustafina’s score of 15.900 less than one-tenth better than Kocian’s. The U.S. women’s gymnastics team had won every gold medal available in Rio before Mustafina successfully defended her Olympic title.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) —Canada is back in soccer’s medal round at the Olympics, and this time the team wants more.

The Canadian women surprisingly reached the podium four years ago at the London Games, beating France 1-0 for the bronze medal. The Canadians again knocked off the higher-ranked French in the quarterfinals in Brazil, earning a semifinal match against Germany on Tuesday in Belo Horizonte.

Canada, ranked Number 10 in the world, has had a brilliant run in Brazil with wins in all four of its matches — three of which came against top-five teams.

“I’m super proud of every single player. We have this never-say-die attitude and defensively we’re not going to give up much, teams are going to have to work to break us down,” Canada captain Christine Sinclair said following the victory over France in Sao Paulo.

If Canada gets by Number 2 Germany for the second time in Brazil, the women will get a shot against either Sweden or Brazil in gold medal match in Rio de Janeiro on Friday.

GOLF…

UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio (AP) — The final round of the U.S. Senior Open was postponed because of a storm that dropped 2.36 inches of rain on the course. SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — Ryan Moore picked up his fifth PGA Tour title by closing with a 4-under 67 in the John Deere Classic. Moore posted a 22-under total for a two-stroke edge over Ben Martin. Moore opened with three straight 65s in the event thrown off schedule by rain Thursday and Friday.
