Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Jan 21, 2013) — Cold weather failed to dampen the enthusiasm and excitement, as over 150 individuals from across North Dakota participated in the 2013 North Dakota Winter Special Olympics, last Friday and Saturday, in Valley City.

2013 was the second consecutive year Valley City and the area hosted the winter games.

Competition included Unified Team Handball, Cross Country Skiing, Alpine Skiing, and Snow Shoe racing.

Jamestown, ND  (KCSi-T.V. News)   The Dairy Queen on Business Loop West  reopened its drive-thru  on Sat Jan 19, 2013.     Patrons can order from the full menu, at the drive-thru only until the interior remodeling is completed.

Manager, Mark Wolf said work was started Jan 7 by the contractor, Hillerud Construction of Jamestown.

The refurbishing in the lobby area, includes new flooring, windows, a new ceiling,  booths,  and repainting the area.   Wolf says the main restaurant area is closed during the remodeling, however, cake orders are still being taken at 252-4181.

The Jamestown DQ began serving customers the entire menu via the drive-thru line on Saturday January 19, 2013.

Specialty orders will be taken again staring at that time, such as Dilly Bars.  The Jamestown Dairy Queen is tentatively scheduled for early February.

In addition when the remodeling is completed,  the Jamestown Dairy Queen will be the new Jamestown location of Orange Julius.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Authorities in Ward County are looking for a shooting suspect after a man was shot in a trailer court east of Minot.

Sheriff’s Department Capt. Bob Barnard says the man was taken to Trinity Medical Center about 7 p.m. Sunday after he was shot with a handgun during what appears to be an argument with a roommate.

His name and condition were not released.

Barnard says it appears the suspect ran off after the shooting. Authorities are continuing to look for both him and the gun used in the assault.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The oil industry is protesting a bill that cuts a tax exemption for low-producing oil wells to keep them pumping.

But North Dakota’s tax department says the exemption also is being applied to some high-producing wells, and it’s costing the state an estimated $50 million a year.

North Dakota Petroleum Council President Ron Ness says the exemption gives companies an incentive to drill in marginal areas.

Republican Rep. David Drovdal of Arnegard introduced the bill to cut the exemption. He says it’s a matter of fairness.

The 1980s-era law excuses higher-producing wells from paying extraction taxes because they are near the weaker wells but drilling in the same oil pool.

Attempts to cut the exemption have failed in the past three legislative sessions.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Rep. Scott Louser says residents of North Dakota should get a break from paying state income tax this year and next.

The Minot Republican told the House Finance and Tax Committee on Monday that it’s an attempt to decrease the tax burden on the citizens of oil-rich North Dakota. The measure would apply to individuals, estates and trusts.

Budget analysts say North Dakota’s coffers would take a more than $1 billion hit over the next two years if the bill becomes law. The proposal would reinstate the state income tax in 2015.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Legislature’s 94-member House chamber has gotten closer-knit this year with the election of Ben Koppelman, who is making his political debut alongside his father, Rep. Kim Koppelman.

Both Koppelmans are Republicans from West Fargo – with the younger man representing a newly drawn district created because the city has grown by 73 percent in the past decade.

The men join another longtime father-son duo, Democrats Jerry Kelsh, of Fullerton, and his son, Scot Kelsh, of Fargo.

Kim Koppelman says the double duos illustrate just how small North Dakota can be.

While the Kelsh family has been involved in North Dakota politics for decades, it’s unclear if Ben Koppleman’s children will follow the path blazed by their grandfather. They’re just 10 and 6 years old..

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Senate’s top Republican says President Barack Obama’s second term represents “a fresh start when it comes to dealing with the great challenges of our day.” Mitch McConnell’s statement followed Obama’s inaugural address, in which he urged Congress to find common ground over the next four years.

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama has been savoring his second and final inauguration. After delivering his speech and listening to patriotic musical selections and a poem written for the occasion, Obama began walking off the inaugural platform to go into the Capitol. But first, he paused to look at the scene on the National Mall, filled with hundreds of thousands of people, saying he wanted “to take a look, one more time,” since he’s “not going to see this again.”

WASHINGTON (AP) – Before starting the inaugural parade, the president and first lady have been guests of honor at a post-inaugural luncheon in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall. About 200 people attended the traditional luncheon, which includes speeches, gift presentations and toasts.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The State Department is confirming that three U.S. citizens were killed in last week’s hostage incident at a natural gas complex in Algeria, while seven other Americans made it out safely. Algeria says 38 hostages and 29 militants died in a four-day-long standoff. Five foreign workers are still unaccounted for.

LONDON (AP) – Britain’s Ministry of Defense says Prince Harry is returning from a 20-week deployment in Afghanistan. The 28-year-old prince served as an Apache helicopter pilot with the Army Air Corps.  Known as Capt. Wales in the military, Harry flew scores of missions as a co-pilot gunner, sometimes firing rockets and missiles at Taliban fighters.
