Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Jan 21, 2013) — Cold weather failed to dampen the enthusiasm and excitement, as over 150 individuals from across North Dakota participated in the 2013 North Dakota Winter Special Olympics, last Friday and Saturday, in Valley City.

2013 was the second consecutive year Valley City and the area hosted the winter games.

Competition included Unified Team Handball, Cross Country Skiing, Alpine Skiing, and Snow Shoe racing.

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) – Plans to sell the City Auditorium in Valley City have been put on hold after an assessment determined the building was worth less than expected.

The  City Commission decided last November to sell the building to a developer who wanted to turn it into apartment buildings – an investment estimated at $1 million.

Because the historic 1936 building is in a flood plain, federal regulations prohibit anyone from making an investment unless the building is worth at least what the investor puts into it. The City Auditorium was assessed at only $178,500.

City Administrator David Schelkoph says officials have not determined how to proceed.

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) – The nonprofit Farm Rescue group is accepting applications from farmers in need of help with spring planting.

North Dakota-based Farm Rescue helps family farmers in the Dakotas, Montana, Minnesota and Iowa who have suffered a major injury, illness or natural disaster. Volunteers help the farmers plant and harvest up to 1,000 acres of crops.

The effort began in 2006. It helped its 200th farmer last year.

Priority is being given to applications received by April 15. More information can be found at http://www.farmrescue.org .

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – Authorities in Mandan are investigating an armed robbery at a local bar.

Police were called to the Last Call Bar on Main Street about 9:40 p.m. Monday. Sgt. Jay Grubele says a male reportedly entered the bar, displayed a semi-automatic handgun and demanded money from the bar’s gambling area. He fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

Only a handful of people were in the bar at the time. Police are reviewing surveillance video.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Authorities have arrested a suspect in a weekend shooting in Minot that injured a man.

The Ward County Sheriff’s Department says 31-year-old Brian Muzzy turned himself in Monday and was arrested on an attempted murder charge. He is being held without bond and did not immediately make a court appearance.

Muzzy is accused of shooting a man who is believed to be his roommate after an argument at a mobile home court Sunday night. The man who was shot and his condition have not been released.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Legislature’s 94-member House chamber has gotten closer-knit this year with the election of Ben Koppelman, who is making his political debut alongside his father, Representative Kim Koppelman.

Both Koppelmans are Republicans from West Fargo – with the younger man representing a newly drawn district created because the city has grown by 73 percent in the past decade.

The men join another longtime father-son duo, Democrats Jerry Kelsh of Fullerton, and his son, Scot Kelsh of Fargo.

Kim Koppelman says the double duos illustrate just how small North Dakota can be.

While the Kelsh family has been involved in North Dakota politics for decades, it’s unclear if Ben Koppleman’s children will follow the path blazed by their grandfather. They’re just 10 and 6 years old.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Representative Scott Louser says residents of North Dakota should get a break from paying state income tax this year and next.

The Minot Republican told the House Finance and Tax Committee on Monday that it’s an attempt to decrease the tax burden on the citizens of oil-rich North Dakota. The measure would apply to individuals, estates and trusts.

Budget analysts say North Dakota’s coffers would take a more than $1 billion hit over the next two years if the bill becomes law. The proposal would reinstate the state income tax in 2015.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s state court administrator says the number of court cases is on the rise. Sally Holewa told the Senate Judiciary committee yesterday that nearly 186,000 cases were filed last year. That’s up more than 11 percent from 2011. Lawmakers are considering adding three new judgeships to keep pace with increased caseloads.

In sports…

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A three-judge appeals panel has scheduled a Feb. 14 hearing in St. Paul, Minn., on a lawsuit over the University of North Dakota’s retired Fighting Sioux nickname.

A judge last May dismissed the lawsuit filed against the NCAA by nickname supporters at the Spirit Lake and Standing Rock Sioux reservations. They claimed they were not included in discussions when the NCAA and the state negotiated a settlement to retire the nickname.

The supporters appealed to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The 8th Circuit assigned the three-judge panel to hear the case.

Sixty-eight-percent of North Dakota voters last June voted to drop the nickname deemed “hostile and abusive” by the NCAA. A separate lawsuit filed by other supporters was dismissed last August.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. –For the second consecutive week, the

University of North Dakota men’s hockey team has improved one spot in the

national polls and is now ranked No. 5 in the latest USCHO.com and USA

Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls released today.

North Dakota (13-7-4, 8-4-4 WCHA) jumped in the polls after a tie and a loss

last weekend at top-ranked Minnesota. UND battled the Golden Gophers to a 4-4

overtime tie on Saturday after suffering a 5-1 defeat on Friday.

Minnesota retained its top spot in both polls, while No. 2 Quinnipiac, No. 3

Boston College and No. 4 New Hampshire rounded out the top five in both.

Duke is No. 1 in The Associated Press’ college basketball poll after dropping from the top spot for one week.

The Blue Devils, who fell to No. 3 last week, took advantage of losses by Louisville and Indiana to move back to No. 1, their fifth week on top this season. Duke received 39 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel Monday.

Michigan, which jumped from fifth to second, had 11 No. 1 votes. Kansas, which had seven first-place votes, and Syracuse, which knocked Louisville out of No. 1, tied for third. Syracuse received eight No. 1 votes.

Louisville dropped to fifth and was followed by Arizona, Indiana, Florida, Butler and Gonzaga.

Wichita State, Cincinnati, Mississippi and Miami moved into the rankings this week, replacing San Diego State, Illinois, UCLA and Marquette.

NBA…

UNDATED (AP) – It looks like the SuperSonics may be returning to Seattle.

The Maloof (mah-LOOF’) family  has agreed to sell the team to a Seattle group led by investor Chris Hansen, the league confirmed in a statement Monday morning. The deal is still pending a vote by the NBA Board of Governors.

A person familiar with the decision said that Hansen’s group will buy 65 percent of the franchise, which is valued at a total price of $525 million, and move the team to Seattle and restore the SuperSonics name.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal was waiting approval.

CLEVELAND (AP) – There’s more bad news for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Center Anderson Varejao (VAR’-eh-zhow), who was enjoying his best year as a pro, will miss the rest of the season because of a blood clot in his lung. The team says he is expected to fully recover but will need to take blood thinners for about three months.

The 6-foot-11 Brazilian was averaging career highs of 14.1 points and 14.4 rebounds this season. The 30-year-old Varejao missed the final 41 games with a broken wrist last year.

The Cavaliers are 10-32, second-to-last in the Eastern Conference.

MLB…

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Outfielder David Murphy and the Texas Rangers have agreed to a one-year contract worth $5,775,000. The deal came three days after Murphy and the team exchanged salary arbitration figures. They agreed in the middle after Murphy sought $6.5 million and the team offered $5.05 million.

Murphy hit .304 with 15 homers and 61 RBIs in 147 games last year. He was sixth in the AL with a .380 on-base percentage.

TENNIS-AUSTRALIAN OPEN…

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) – Sixth-seed Li Na moved into the semifinals at the Australian Open with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Agnieszka Radwanska (ahg-nee-ESH’-kuh rahd-VAHN’-skuh).  The loss snapped the fourth-seeded Radwanska’s 13-match winning streak.  She won a pair of warm-up tournaments heading into the Open.

Maria Sharapova (shah-rah-POH’-vah) extended her remarkable run at the Australian Open, defeating fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova 6-2, 6-2 today.  The second-seed has rolled through her first four matches.

It will be interesting to see if Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) shows any lasting effects of his last match when the top-seed meets No. 5 seed Tomas Berdych (TOH’-mahs bur-DEEK’).  Djokovic was on the court for five-hour, five-set win over Stanislas Wawrinka (vah-VRINK’-uh).

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – Supporters of longtime Penn State football coach Joe Paterno are marking the 1-year anniversary of his death today with a candlelight vigil. The Hall of Fame coach died of lung cancer at age 85. Paterno’s legacy was badly tarnished by the sex abuse scandal involving Jerry Sandusky.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama still has some inaugural loose ends to tie up today. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are to attend a prayer service this morning at the National Cathedral, then celebrate with campaign and White House staffers at one last glitzy inaugural ball tonight. Other than that it’s a normal working day as Obama faces the fresh challenges that mark his final term.

BAGHDAD (AP) – There’s been no immediate claim of responsibility for the latest deadly attack in Iraq amid simmering sectarian tensions. A string of car bomb attacks in and around Baghdad killed 17 people and wounded dozens today, deepening fears of an increase in violence.

BRUSSELS (AP) – Regulation of pilot and crew hours is the subject of protests today in Europe. Pilot and cabin crew organizations are calling for better protection against in-flight fatigue in planned European Union legislation. They worry they could be asked to fly for more than 12 hours when scientists claim 10 is the upper safety limit. The airline industry counters that the current proposal would be one of the strictest in the world.

LEIDSCHENDAM, Netherlands (AP) – Prosecutors say courts should hold “lords of war” as responsible for sponsoring atrocities as the machete or machine gun-wielding killers they support. Today they urged international judges to reject former Liberian President Charles Taylor’s appeal against his war crimes conviction and 50-year prison sentence.
