Jamestown (CSi) – A crash between a car and a pickup in the westbound lane of Tenth Street SE occurred after 5-pm Tuesday March 14, and sent at least one person to the hospital via Jamestown Area Ambulance.

On the scene were the Jamestown Police, Stutsman County Sheriff, and Jamestown Area Ambulance.

The crash closed one of the westbound lanes, with the car ending up on the north boulevard.

Valley City  (CSi)  One individual has filed to run for the unexpired term of City Commissioner, Richard Ross, who resigned the position earlier this year.  Ross was elected to the City Commission in June of 2016 for a four year term.

Filing a petition to run for the seat is Ross Powell.

Powell is  a personal banker at  Wells Fargo’s Valley City branch.   He presently serves as a member of the Valley City Park Board.

City Auditor Avis Richter says, his name will appear on the election ballot.

Write In votes may also be placed on the election ballot.

The Special Election is Tuesday May 23, 2017, at City Hall in Valley City.

The one polling place will be open from 7-a.m. to 7-p.m.

 

(CSi)  Voters in Midkota Public School District rejected a $6.4 million bond referendum on Tuesday.

Les Dale, superintendent and high school principal says unofficial results show that 359 residents in the school district voted against the referendum and 242 voted for it.

A 60 percent approval of the 601 votes was required to pass the 20-year bond that would have gone toward a $7.4 million project to improve the school district’s two schools.

 

Jamestown (CSi)  The City Beautification Committee will hold the first of several  education forums to help residents  understand residential recycling in Jamestown.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Senate has killed a bill to repeal the state’s longstanding Sunday business restrictions.

The bipartisan measure lifting the state’s so-called blue laws failed 22-25 in the Senate on Tuesday. It narrowly passed the House 48-46 last month.

The National Conference of State Legislatures says about a dozen states have some form of Sunday sales laws, but only North Dakota prohibits shopping on Sunday morning.

North Dakota residents can order alcohol at a restaurant or bar late Sunday morning but must wait until afternoon to go shopping because of the ban that’s rooted in religious tradition.

North Dakota law once required most businesses to stay closed on Sundays. The Legislature in 1991 allowed most businesses to open on Sundays but not before noon.

 

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota legislative appropriation committees have lowered expectations for tax revenue for the current budget cycle due to slumping oil and agriculture economies.

House and Senate appropriation committees trimmed the expected tax collections by $10 million on Tuesday for the two-year budget period ends on June 30.

An updated forecast of the state’s tax collections last week predicted North Dakota’s treasury would collect $46.3 million less than previously expected before its current two-year budget period ends. Appropriation committees adopted the forecast that assumes the treasure will collect $56.3 million less.

The state treasury also is expected to collect $103.2 million less than previously expected for the next two-year budget, from this July through June 2019. The appropriations committees did not amend that forecast.

 

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Legislature is deciding whether to allow people to carry a concealed weapon without a permit.

The so-called “constitutional carry” bill already passed the North Dakota House and is being considered by the Senate. It would allow people 21 or older to forgo background checks and classes that are now required.

Supporters told the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday that the bill promotes constitutional rights and allows protection from criminals. Critics worry it could lead to more shootings as people with less training would be carrying weapons.

The full Senate is expected to vote on the bill later this week. About a dozen states already have similar laws.

The number of concealed carry permits in North Dakota has more than doubled in the past five years, to 48,700.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The company building the Dakota Access pipeline has asked a federal judge to reject the latest attempt by two American Indian tribes to halt the project.

Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners says in court documents filed late Monday that it has suffered enough delays and that the Standing Rock and Cheyenne River Sioux tribes are employing “a last-gasp litigation tactic.”

The tribes have appealed a decision by federal Judge James Boasberg to not stop construction of the pipeline’s final segment under Lake Oahe, a Missouri River reservoir in North Dakota they consider sacred. They’ve asked Boasberg to stop oil from flowing through the four-state pipeline until the appeal is resolved.

The company says crews expect to finish construction and conduct final testing this week, and that oil could flow as soon as Monday.

VALLEY CITY (VCSU) – The all-time leading passer in VCSU football history will continue his playing career overseas.

Valley City State University’s Kurtis Walls has signed to play professionally with the Prague Lions in the capital of the Czech Republic, the team announced Thursday.

A native of Laveen, Ariz., Walls wrapped up his VCSU career this fall and holds most of the major passing records in school history, including career marks for passing yards and touchdowns. He finished his VCSU career with 8,675 passing yards and 87 touchdowns in four seasons.

Walls will join a talented Prague Lions team that plays in the top division of the Czech League of American Football. The Lions advanced to the league championship last season – The Czech Bowl –before losing a 10-9 heartbreaker to their rival, the Prague Black Panthers. Walls arrived in Prague, Czech Republic, this week.

Prague offensive coordinator Zach Harrod, says, “His stats speak for themselves, but Kurtis will also add another dimension to our offense. We all look forward to working with him.”

Walls is the second recent Viking to play overseas. Former VCSU running back Derek Elliott found success last year playing in the German Football League 2.

 

Bismarck (CSi)  Jamestown High School Blue Jay,  Megan Gaffaney  has been selected to the All-West Region girls basketball team, voted on by region coaches.

Megan, a junior guard/forward, helped the Blue Jays to 11 victories, averaging 13.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2 steals per game. It’s the second year in a rowshe’s has been named to the all-conference team.

Bismarck  (CSi)  The North Dakota Game & Fish Department  says, North Dakota anglers, spring light goose hunters and trappers are reminded that new licenses for the 2017-18 season are required starting April 1.

 

 

Anglers and hunters can purchase new licenses  beginning March 15 at the North Dakota Game and Fish Department website, gf.nd.gov, and at more than 140 vendor locations throughout the state.

License buyers who use the Game and Fish website will notice a new look to the online system, which allows customers to purchase, apply for or renew licenses.

Hunters and anglers who have purchased licenses in the past should find their information in the new system. However, if prior information isn’t found, or if the information seems incorrect – such as boat registrations or bonus points – customers should contact the Department at 701-328-6335.

Game and Fish IT supervisor Brian Hosek said the new system, which has been in place since December, has met expectations and is working well. “The majority of users, such as people renewing their boat registrations, and spring turkey applicants, have experienced a smooth transition, but with a major overhaul like this we expect some issues to arise that need to be worked out,” Hosek said. “We ask anyone who experiences a technical issue to contact the Department so we can help them work through it.”

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — The University of North Dakota basketball team is providing a morale boost to a campus still smarting from a nickname controversy and reeling from budget cuts that put some athletic programs on the chopping block.

The school is making its first appearance in the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament, considered in most circles to be the premier event of college sports. While that might not be the prevailing opinion on a campus where hockey is king, the basketball team is showing fans what it means to be in the Big Dance.

The team is also putting the new Fighting Hawks logo on display. The moniker was rolled out this year after a three-year moratorium to let people cool off from a contentious battle over the now-retired Fighting Sioux nickname.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A former North Dakota federal prosecutor is defending his decision to prosecute the founder of a Fargo-based company for illegal gambling.

Susan Bala served 17 months in prison before her conviction was overturned. Bala operated Racing Services Inc., a business that handled bets for closed-circuit horse race gambling sites.

Former U.S. Attorney Drew Wrigley says it was a very complicated case. Wrigley says Bala and her attorney had the opportunity to come down to his office and tell her side of the story before she was indicted.

A federal bankruptcy judge has ruled that the state must pay Bala and others more than $13 million it collected in taxes. Interest payments could add millions more to the total.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Alex Ovechkin ended the longest goal-scoring drought of his career as the Washington Capitals held on to beat the Minnesota Wild 4-2 Tuesday night and snap a season-worst four-game losing streak.

Ovechkin hadn’t scored in 10 games or had an even-strength goal in 18 before firing a one-timer by league save percentage leader Devan Dubnyk in the second period. Ovechkin’s 28th goal of the season came 1 second after a power play expired.

Nate Schmidt, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Jay Beagle also scored for the NHL-leading Capitals, who recaptured sole possession of first in the Metropolitan Division.

Goaltender Braden Holtby put on a show, stopping 32 of the 34 shots he faced as the Capitals won for the first time since March 4 and moved two points up on the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Minnesota lost for the fifth time in seven games despite goals from Matt Dumba and Eric Staal and 36 saves by Dubnyk.

VIKINGS-JONES

 

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have signed defensive end Datone Jones, the former first-round pick of the rival Green Bay Packers.

The Vikings closed the deal on Tuesday with Jones, who was selected 26th overall out of UCLA in the 2013 draft. The 6-foot-4, 285-pound Jones played defensive end in 59 of a possible 64 regular-season games, mostly as a backup. He also played some outside linebacker in Green Bay’s 3-4 scheme.

The Packers previously declined their fifth-year option on Jones that is built into every first-round pick’s contract. Jones has nine sacks and seven passes defended in his career.

Jones was a college teammate of Vikings starting linebackers Anthony Barr and Eric Kendricks.
