From JRMC

Jamestown, ND, (KCSi-T.V. News January 31, 2013) Jamestown Regional Medical Center (JRMC) is now offering services for steroid joint injections for pain management. These services include injections into major joints like the hip or shoulder and injections into the epidural space and facet joints of the spine.

The procedures are performed by board-certified radiologists who have received advanced training in injection techniques and musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology. Radiologists, Dr. Gary Wade and Dr. Madhu Reddy, joined the JRMC team in July of 2013.

Diane Nelson, JRMC Radiology manager, says, “JRMC is unique and very fortunate to have two extremely qualified and talented radiologists. They are able to provide a variety of services with very personal and individualized care to their patients.”

Since arriving at JRMC, the radiologists have seen a need to provide steroid injections to the people in the community who suffer from acute or chronic joint and back pain. All the procedures are performed using x-ray fluoroscopy or CT guidance that improves accuracy and assures that the steroid is being injected into the correct space.

Inflammation in the musculoskeletal system is a common source of pain for many people. Image-guided injection of a short-acting anesthetic and anti-inflammatory steroid is useful in the management of joint pain that has not resolved after conservatory therapy. The joint injections can be used to:

· resolve pain faster than would occur with rest and medication

· delay surgical intervention

· diagnose the source of pain

· diminish symptoms

· control pain in non-surgical patients

Procedures can routinely be scheduled at JRMC Radiology within a couple of days. Some insurance companies require pre-authorization and/or documentation of medication/therapy prior to scheduling an injection.

To learn more, patients should talk to their physicians and ask them to schedule an appointment for a pain management injection at JRMC Radiology.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A 2-year-old boy who was found outside north of Williston over the weekend has died.

Williams County Sheriff’s Detective Caleb Fry says the boy was flown to Fargo for medical care after being found Saturday morning. He did not immediate identify the boy or provide details about the incident.

Fry says the sheriff’s office continues to investigate.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Grand Forks police say they have arrested a suspect in a hit-and-run case outside a south end motel. The Grand Forks Herald reports that the suspect was arrested early Saturday morning on two counts of aggravated assault. The incident happened Thursday night. Police say the victim, 32-year-old Anthony Sawyer of Winter Park, Florida had been injured in a fight and was lying on the ground when the suspect drove into him. Sawyer remains hospitalized.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s teachers union has voted to merge with the state’s public employees union. North Dakota Education Association President Dakota Draper says that 105 of the 140 delegates on hand Saturday voted to combine with the North Dakota Public Employees Association. The vote required a two-thirds majority to pass.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – If the North Dakota Legislature is under way, that means it’s time to debate bottle rockets.

Legislators this week are expected to debate lifting the ban on selling skyrockets – a topic that’s been sparked repeatedly over the years. The last effort was a dud.

Eye doctors helped the Legislature see the need to ban bottle rocket sales two sessions ago, in 2009. The issue was raised again in the 2011 session.

The law still allows people to possess and shoot off bottle rockets.

Fireworks are just one of several issues expected to ignite the Legislature this week. Another proposal to be discussed is a Republican-backed plan to restructure oil taxes in the state.

MEDORA, N.D. (AP) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking opinions on a proposed river bank project in the North Dakota Badlands.

The project would stabilize the banks of a portion of the Little Missouri River near Medora. Corps officials say it would improve safety for drivers.

The Dickinson Press reports that the bank has been eroding for several years, leaving vertical drop-offs of more than 25 feet in some areas.

The corps is asking for comment on possible impacts to the environment, such as effects on endangered species, historic properties and water quality.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – The booming North Dakota oil patch city of Williston is getting even bigger.

The City Commission has approved an annexation to the north of about 7.5 square miles of land. About 500 property owners are affected.

Public Works Director Monte Meiers says the annexation will make it easier for officials to plan infrastructure such as roads and sewer lines.

Some residents in the area fear a loss of liberties such as the ability to hunt and shoot off fireworks.

Public protests fell short of the 25 percent threshold needed to stop the project.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A University of North Dakota professor and adventure sports enthusiast has unveiled a 40-foot ice climbing wall.

Jim Grijalva billed his grand opening over the weekend as “North Dakota’s first ice climbing festival.” The man-made wall is located west of Grand Forks near Turtle River State Park.

Several climbers strapped crampons on their boots and grabbed ice picks to make the ascent to the top. None of them made it.

Fellow climber Andy Magness says it was a tough climb because the below-zero temperatures caused the ice to splinter off. He says ideal climbing conditions would be in slightly warmer weather.

Says Magness, “When it’s around 20 degrees, you’ll swing the pick and you’ll get a nice solid ‘thunk,’ and it will stick better.”

In sports…

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota college men’s basketball coach has recorded his 400th career victory. Valley City State coach Jeff Kaminsky reached the milestone Saturday when the Vikings defeated Mayville State 68-49. Kaminsky is in his eighth season at Valley City State, where he’s compiled a 131-99 record.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – An indoor football stadium and convention facility in North Dakota’s largest city could be expanding.

Fargodome officials are looking to add a 50,000-square-foot, two-level events center to the southeast corner of the facility.

The project could include a 6,000-square-foot club room on the third floor and a similarly sized sky lounge on the fourth floor that would overlook the arena floor.

Fargodome Authority Board President Darrell Vanyo says he believes the board would be willing to dedicate half of the dome’s $34 million reserves toward the project.

Rob Sobolik, the Fargodome manager, says he expects the project to cost more than $17 million, so other funding sources would be needed.

The last major addition to the building was a $6.8 million lobby in 2000.

Strange way to describe career-threatening major knee surgery.
