Washington (CSi) U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp took to the floor of the U.S. Senate Tuesday to honor fallen Fargo police officer Jason Moszer, who was killed in the line of duty in February 2016, and Rolette County Sheriff’s Deputy Colt Allery who lost his life in the line of duty in January, as well as peace officers around the country for their work to keep communities safe every day.
Just yesterday, Heitkamp sat down with Officer Moszer’s family and joined them for a memorial service commemorating his life and work protecting the Fargo community – following the addition of his name to the National Peace Officers Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. Next year, Deputy Allery will be added to the memorial wall for his sacrifice while answering that call to protect and serve his community.
Heitkamp helped introduce a bipartisan resolution dedicating this week, the week of May 15 – 21 as National Police Week, to the memory of those like Officer Moszer, Sheriff’s Deputy Allery, and law enforcement officers like they who put their lives on the line to keep our nation’s families and neighborhoods safe. The Senate also passed bipartisan legislation Heitkamp supported to allow those awarded Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant funding to use COPS resources to hire veterans as career law enforcement officers.
“North Dakota is blessed with so many selfless young people who, raised in our communities, dedicate their lives to keeping us safe by becoming peace officers,” said Heitkamp. “Officer Jason Moszer and Deputy Colt Allery were exemplary among them. Growing up in tightknit North Dakota communities, Officer Moszer and Deputy Allery began serving their state and country as soon as they could. Until the day of each of their passing they worked tirelessly to protect the residents North Dakotans and communities they loved. This week I had the chance to join his family and dozens of his Fargo Police Department colleagues in honoring his courage and sacrifice at the National Peace Officers Memorial Service on grounds of the U.S. Capitol. Officer Moszer’s name was also added to the National Peace Officers Memorial Wall, where he joins the other men and women of this country honored for giving the ultimate sacrifice while answering the call to protect and serve. Next year, Deputy Allery’s name will join those hallowed names on the wall. As the nation observes National Police Week, I’m humbled by the opportunity to pay tribute to Officer Moszer, Deputy Allery, and to all of North Dakota’s and our nation’s peace officers dedicated to keeping our communities strong and safe.”
