There is a good chance for thunderstorms Tuesday. Some storms

could be severe over central and eastern North Dakota, with large

hail, damaging wind and a few tornadoes.

 

Valley City  (CSi)  There is a burn ban currently in  effect for Barnes County through Tuesday, June 13, 2017.

Barnes County Commission president Mike Metcalf reports, the burn ban will be evaluated on Tuesday, June 13th and determie if it needs  to be extended. He said the full commission would have to vote to approve extending a burn ban if its necessary.

Tender dry conditions and high wind have pushed the fire danger index into the high category for Barnes County and many other counties across North Dakota in the last week.

 

Oriska  (CSi)  The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports, about 10:30 p.m., Friday, a multiple vehicle crash occurred  ten  miles east of Valley City.

The report says 18 year-old Alexis Rath of Wimbeldon was traveling westbound on I-94 when she lost control of the vehicle as it began to hydroplane. Her vehicle crossed through the median and came to rest in the eastbound lane of I-94.

An eastbound semi, driven by 32 year-old Mazen Beiruti of Martensville SK struck Rath’s vehicle and left the roadway crossing the median. Beiruti’s semi then struck the trailer of a westbound semi driven by 62 year-old Tony Badrawi of Dickinson.

Beiruti’s semi blocked the westbound lane of I-94. Badrawi’s semi overturned and came to rest in the north ditch of I-94. His trailer was damaged and began to leak liquid oxygen.

Beiruti was extracted from his vehicle and transported to a Fargo Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Badrawi was transported to Mercy Hospital in Valley City for minor injuries. Alexis Rath was not injured in the crash.

Both westbound lanes of I-94 were closed for about 40 minutes as emergency crews worked to remove Beirtui from his semi.

This crash is under investigation with the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Assisting at the scene were:  The Barnes County Sheriff’s Office, The Valley City Rural Fire District, Tower City Fire Department, Barnes County Ambulance, Casselton Ambulance and Buffalo First Responders all assisted on scene.

Jamestown  (CSi)  An abbreviated version of the 21st Annual Stutsman County Relay for Life at the U of J- Taylor Stadium was held Friday June 9.  Due to severe weather,  participants at the Relay For Life were cleared from the field at 8:18 pm Friday, with activities ending early.

Relay for Life Leader, Chelsey Francis says the  Taylor Stadium track was had over 1,500 luminaries, in memory those who have lost their lives to cancer and those who have survived and those battle the disease.

Windy conditions meant that  organizers had to cancel the silent auction after wind blew items off the tables.

The fundraising goal was $85,000, and about  $50,000 was raised prior to the relay..

Survivor Don Caine was the speaker for the evening sayings that it’s important to spread the information because cancer touches everyone’s life in one way or another.

Jamestown  (CSi)  Jamestown author Keith Norman has just released his new non-fiction historical book, “Frontier Valor,”  The Medal of Honor on the Northern Plains.

On Friday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Keith said over the past several months he’s researched historical references, including historical archives, and photos  which he has put together in the book.

It centers on those who received the Medal in action during the Indian Wars on the Northern Plains the bulk of the action occurring between 1870-1880 in Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, and Minnesota.

The biographical sketches of the 133 individual receiving the Medal are accompanied by their photo.

The book also highlights battles, and features maps and other historical photos from the time period.

He says the book at a cost of $20 is available through Amazon.com and KeithNormanBooks.com and published by Keith’s publishing company, Great Stories Books.

They are also available at Dakota Store, on First Avenue South in Jamestown and the Frontier Village location, along with Ft. Seward in Jamestown.  He asks those purchasing books at Ft. Seward to bring the exact change.

Keith and author Dr. Todd Harburn from Michigan will host a book signing and presentation of their books  set for Monday June 19, 2017 at Ft. Seward beginning at 7-p.m.

Harburn’s book details the life of Dr. DeWolf, an historical look at DeWolf, a surgeon, during the same time period, who spent time at Ft. Seward in Jamestown.

 

Wahpeton  (CSi)  The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports,  48-year-old Wahpeton, man died Saturday from injuries sustained in an ATV rollover Friday.

48 year old John Hanson, was operating the ATV northbound on Richland County Road 8 about two miles north of Wahpeton when the accident occurred at 9:23 p.m.

Hanson’s ATV veered to the right leaving the roadway and overturned several times. Hanson was thrown from the ATV and was unconscious at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet.

Hanson was transported to St. Francis Medical Center in Breckenridge and then to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo. Hanson died of his injuries on Saturday at Sanford in Fargo. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, the patrol said.

The patrol investigated the crash and were assisted on scene by the Richland County Sheriff’s Office, Dwight Rural Fire and Wahpeton/Breckenridge Ambulance.

 

West Fargo, N.D. – The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports, on Saturday at 5:23 PM there was a single vehicle crash that occurred on 57th St N in West Fargo injuring two people.

40 Year old Jason DeLancy of Fargo was driving a 2001 Ford Mustang south on 57th St N from 19th Ave N when his vehicle veered to the right and left the roadway. The mustang entered the west ditch and vaulted over a driveway approach. The vehicle continued southbound until it vaulted over a rail road track and embankment. The vehicle came to rest on its wheels. DeLancy and his passenger, 43 year old Danielle Huston of Fargo, were extracted from the vehicle and transported to Sanford Medical Center for serious injuries. Alcohol was a factor in this crash.

This crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office, West Fargo Police Department, West Fargo Fire and FM Ambulance assisted on scene.

 

 

MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) — A Moorhead man is accused of rubbing hot sauce and cayenne pepper in the eyes of his 2-month-old daughter and keeping her from breathing until she turned blue.

Thirty-one-year-old Shawn Foltz is charged with neglect of a child, malicious punishment of a child and two counts of third-degree assault, all felonies.

KFGO radio reports that Foltz admitted to investigators that while he was at work he thought about ways to harm the toddler. Authorities say he also snapped her with a towel, burned her by spraying hot water in her face and threw fireworks at her.

Foltz allegedly accused the victim’s 3-year-old brother of causing the injuries by hitting her with a toy gun.

Foltz’s attorney, Rex Tucker, could not be reached on Sunday.

 

 

OSLO, Minn. (AP) — Authorities say human remains have been found on the bank of the Red River near Oslo.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office tells KFGO radio that two men who were fishing Saturday afternoon found bones and a skull.

The remains have been transported to the medical examiner in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

The sheriff’s office says the matter is under investigation and no further information will be released.

 

 

LAKOTA, N.D. (AP) — A World War II soldier from North Dakota has been laid to rest in his home state, nearly 74 years after he was killed in the Gilbert Islands.

Services for Marine Corps Field Musician 1st Class Warren G. Nelson were held Saturday in his hometown of Lakota. He was buried next to his parents at Lakota Cemetery.

Nelson was killed in action during the Battle of Tarawa in 1943. The nonprofit group, History Flight, found and identified Nelson’s remains last year.

The soldier’s cousin, Bob Nelson, says he was overwhelmed by the attendance at the ceremony and the military’s efforts to ensure a proper burial.

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum says the state is proud to welcome home Nelson and honor his life and sacrifice.

 

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The company behind the proposed Keystone XL pipeline has asked the U.S. State Department to pause its review of another pipeline that would carry oil from northwest North Dakota into Canada.

TransCanada Corp.’s Upland Pipeline would originate about 15 miles southwest of Williston and transport up to 300,000 barrels of crude per day north of the border.

Spokesman Matthew John says the company wants to pause the U.S. review to better align the timing with TransCanada’s proposed Energy East Pipeline System, which is related to the Upland Pipeline and under review by Canadian regulators.

The Upland Pipeline also needs approval of North Dakota regulators.

 

 

DETROIT (AP) — The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation says 33 projects across the U.S. will share $5 million as winners of the Knight Cities Challenge.

Winners announced Monday include five projects each in Detroit and Philadelphia as well as efforts in Miami and more than a dozen other communities. Projects seek to help attract and keep residents, expand economic opportunities and create a culture of civic engagement.

Highlights include efforts in Detroit to make a beach along part of the Detroit River and in Akron, Ohio, to create a forest and public space.

Other communities include Aberdeen, South Dakota; Biloxi, Mississippi; Bradenton, Florida; Columbia, South Carolina; Charlotte, North Carolina; Duluth, Minnesota; Gary, Indiana; Grand Forks, North Dakota; Lexington, Kentucky; Macon, Georgia; San Jose, California; and Wichita, Kansas.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE PLAYOFFS

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Stanley Cup is staying in the Steel City.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are the first team in 19 years to win a second straight Stanley Cup as they completed the feat with a 2-0 shutout of the Predators in Nashville. Neither team scored until former Predator Patric Hornqvist beat Pekka Rinne (PEH’-kuh REE’-nay) from a bad angle with 1:35 remaining. Carl Hagelin (HAG’-lihn) sealed the win by scoring into an empty net with 14 seconds left.

Matt Murray stopped 27 shots in recording his second consecutive shutout. Murray also blanked Nashville in the Penguins’ 6-0 rout in Game 5.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was awarded the Conn Smythe (smyth) Trophy for a second consecutive year after finishing second to teammate Evgeni Malkin with 27 points.

It’s the fifth Stanley Cup for the Penguins, who have won all of their clinchers on the road. The 1998 Red Wings were the last team to win a second consecutive Cup.

Penguins forward Chris Kunitz (KOO’-nihts) now leads all active players with four career championships.

It ends the deepest playoff run in Predators history. Nashville made the playoffs as the 16th-best team in the regular season before knocking off Chicago, St. Louis and Anaheim.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Sylvia Fowles scored a season-high 30 points and the Minnesota Lynx beat the Dallas Wings 91-74 Sunday to remain the WNBA’s only beaten team. Minnesota led at halftime by 14. Dallas was within eight late in the third quarter but Rebekkah Brunson restored a 10-point lead with a basket and the Lynx remained in front by double figures.

LONG POND, Pa. (AP) — Ryan Blaney has earned his first career NASCAR Cup victory by holding off Kevin Harvick down the stretch at Pocono Raceway.

Blaney was exhilarated following a frenetic final 10 laps in which he needed to pass a blocking Kyle Busch with about nine laps left. The 23-year-old Blaney won for the first time in 68 career starts, doing it without a working team radio.

Erik Jones was third, followed by Kurt Busch, Brad Keselowski (lehs-LOW’-skee) and Martin Truex Jr.

Darrell Wallace Jr. finished a lap down in 26th in the first start by a black driver in the Cup series since 2006.

 

F1-CANADIAN GRAND PRIX

MONTREAL (AP) — Lewis Hamilton took the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix for the sixth time and the third year in a row.

Hamilton left from the pole and was never challenged as most of the jostling was behind him.

Valtteri Bottas was second, 19.7 seconds back to give Mercedes a sweep of the top two spots. Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo was third for the third straight week.

 

 

FRENCH OPEN

PARIS (AP) — Rafael Nadal has become the first player of the Open era to win the same major 10 times.

Nadal took his 10th French Open title and 15th career Grand Slam championship by thumping third seed Stan Wawrinka (vah-VRIHN’-kuh), 6-2, 6-3, 6-1. The 31-year-old Nadal breezed through the tournament by winning every set and dropping just 35 games, the second fewest by any man in a Grand Slam tourney since the Open era began in 1968.

The 31-year-old Nadal watched last year’s French Open from home while recovering from a wrist injury. His latest title breaks a tie with Pete Sampras for the second most Grand Slams by a male, three behind Roger Federer.

 

On Saturday…

PARIS- Jelena Ostapenko produced an astonishing fightback to overpower favorite Simona Halep 4-6 6-4 6-3 in the French Open final on Saturday and become the first Latvian grand slam champion.

The 20-year-old looked down and out when Halep had points for a 4-0 lead in the second set but hit back with an audacious display of power to steamroller third-seeded Romanian Halep.

 

 

SOCCER-WORLD CUP QUALIFYING

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The United States men’s soccer team is unbeaten in its last four World Cup qualifying matches after picking up a rare point in Mexico.

Michael Bradley scored a stunning early goal from about 40 yards before the U.S. held on for a 1-1 tie in Mexico City. Bradley put the U.S. ahead in the sixth minute when he deflected a poor backpass by Mexican star Javier Hernandez and created his own breakaway.

The Mexicans tied it on Carlos Vela’s 23-yard shot in the 23rd minute.

It was just the third point earned by the Americans at Azteca Stadium.

The U.S. is now 2-2-2 in the final round of Cup qualifying.

Mexico leads the final round of the North and Central American and Caribbean region with 14 points, followed by Costa Rica (eight), which is ahead of the U.S. on goal difference. Panama, Honduras and Trinidad and Tobago trail. The top three advance to next year’s World Cup in Russia, and the fourth-place team faces Asia’s No. 5 nation in a playoff.

 

 

PGA-ST JUDE CLASSIC

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Daniel Berger shot a 4-under 66 to erase a three-shot deficit and win the St. Jude Classic for a second consecutive year.

The 24-year-old is the fourth back-to-back winner at St. Jude and the first since David Toms did it in 2003 and ’04. Berger was 10 under for the tournament, one shot ahead of Charl Schwartzel and Whee Kim.

 

 

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Brandt Jobe won the PGA Tour Champions event Sunday by one shot, finishing at 14-under for his first victory in 19 years.

Jobe shot a 69 in the final round to snap a winless drought that had stretched back to 1998, when he took first in a tournament in Japan.

Scott McCarron finished one shot back and one ahead of money leader Bernhard Langer, who was seeking his third straight tournament titlE.

 

 

LPGA CLASSIC

CAMBRIDGE, Ontario (AP) — Ariya Jutanugarn won the Manulife LPGA Classic with a birdie on the first playoff hole to beat American Lexi Thompson and South Korea’s In Gee Chun.

Jutanugarn shot a 3-under 69 in the final round and was tied with Thompson and Chun at 17-under 271 heading into the playoff.

Thompson started the day with a one-shot lead and led by four at the turn before carding four bogeys on the back nine.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Jeff Sessions is preparing to face former Senate colleagues over his role in the controversy around ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. It’s part of an escalating investigation into possible collusion with the Kremlin or obstruction of justice by President Donald Trump. Sessions is scheduled to testify Tuesday before the Senate Intelligence committee and was due for sharp questioning. It is not yet known whether the hearing will be public or closed.

SEATTLE (AP) — Immune therapy is the hottest trend in cancer care and “living drugs” are its next frontier. Genetically engineering a patient’s own immune cells to be stronger and smarter lets them grow inside the body into an army that seeks and destroys tumors. Two versions of these so-called CAR-T cells may hit the market soon, to treat some types of leukemia and lymphoma. Now researchers are trying to harness their power to help more patients, and more common kinds of cancer.

MOSCOW (AP) — A spokeswoman for Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny says electricity has been cut at Navalny’s offices in Moscow. The spokeswoman has tweeted the information shortly after Navalny was reportedly arrested outside his Moscow home while on his way to an unsanctioned protest demonstration.

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Bill Cosby’s lawyers rested their case after just a few minutes Monday without calling the comedian to the stand, opting against a high-stakes gamble that could have allowed him to work his charm on the jury but could have also exposed him to blistering cross-examination.

Jurors were expected to hear closing arguments and could get the case in the afternoon.

With Cosby’s wife of 53 years, Camille, looked on from the gallery for the first time in the 6-day-old trial, Cosby told a judge that he made the decision not to testify after talking it over with his lawyers.

 

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rico’s Gov. Ricardo Rossello is vowing to turn the U.S. territory into the 51st state after statehood won in a non-binding referendum, despite a boycott and low turnout that raised questions about the vote’s legitimacy. Rossello told a couple hundred supporters waving U.S. flags late Sunday that he will soon create a commission to appoint two senators and five representatives to demand statehood from the U.S. Congress, which has to approve any changes to the island’s political status.
