The base will now operate under Air Combat Command instead of Air Mobility Command. Base leaders say it will place the unit under the major command that organizes, trains and equips airmen to perform drone missions.
The move affects about 1,400 people. Base officials say the change should not have an immediate impact on the number of airmen in Grand Forks.
The base supports the RG-4 Global Hawk drone, a high-altitude, long-endurance aircraft.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Federal legislation that calls for expanding the Amber Alert system in Native American communities across the country has cleared its last hurdle before heading to the full U.S. Senate for consideration.
The measure was endorsed this week by the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. It’s supported by Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona and a bipartisan contingent of lawmakers from New Mexico, Montana and North Dakota.
The legislation is in response to the 2016 deadly abduction of 11-year-old Ashlynne Mike on the Navajo Nation, the largest American Indian reservation in the U.S. The Navajo Nation spans parts of New Mexico, Arizona and Utah.
The measure would make permanent and expand the tribal Amber Alert pilot program. This would allow tribes to manage and operate their own alert systems.

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana was shot this morning at a congressional baseball practice.
Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., said several other people also were hit, including two law enforcement officers.
Brooks said he was on deck at a practice for the congressional baseball team when the shooting occurred. Scalise, the majority whip, appeared to have been shot in the hip and it appeared two Capitol Hill police agents were shot, he added.
Brooks said there were a number of congressmen and congressional staffers lying on the ground, and at least one of them was wounded. The Alabama Republican said he used his belt as a tourniquet to help one of the victims.
He said the shooter appeared to be a white male but added that “I saw him for a second or two.” He said the shooter was behind the third base dugout and didn’t say anything.
LONDON (AP) — London’s Ambulance Service says 74 people are being treated following a massive apartment blaze in west London. Paul Woodrow, the head of operations, says that 20 of those patients are in critical condition. He said that the patients were being treated for a range of injuries and smoke inhalation. Police said that six people have died in the blaze, which broke out after midnight Wednesday at Grenfell Tower, an apartment block housing 120 homes.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Jeff Sessions has vigorously defended himself against a fusillade of questions from Senate intelligence committee members trying to burrow into the depths of Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election last year. Sessions steadfastly denied at yesterday’s congressional hearing that he had an undisclosed meeting with Russia’s ambassador to the United States and vowed to defend his honor against “scurrilous and false allegations.”
WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is set to appear before the House Foreign Affairs Committee as momentum builds on Capitol Hill for a package of new Russia sanctions aimed at punishing Moscow for meddling in the 2016 presidential election. Tillerson is scheduled to testify Wednesday, just hours ahead of a vote in the Senate on the package. Tillerson has said the U.S. relationship with Russia is at an all-time low. Yet he’s also cautioned against taking steps that might close off communication.
CINCINNATI (AP) — The family of an American college student released from a North Korean prison is expected to hold a news conference Thursday morning. Twenty-two-year-old Otto Warmbier arrived at a Cincinnati airport late Tuesday night, but his family says he’s in a coma. He’s at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Warmbier was serving a 15-year prison term with hard labor in North Korea for alleged anti-state acts.
UNDATED (AP) — Two Georgia inmates overpowered and killed two guards on a prison bus before fleeing in a stolen car. Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills says the escape happened about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday as the guards drove 33 inmates between prisons.
