Omaha (CSi) The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports that Pipestem Dam releases have begun in order to evacuate flood storage as outlined in the water control manual. Releases are currently set at 125 cubic feet per second (cfs). Jamestown Dam releases are set to match the inflow of the reservoir and are currently 75 cfs, up from 50-cfs. The combined release is 200 cfs.
Pipestem Dam is currently at pool elevation 1463.68 ft, which results in 23.0 percent of the flood pool occupied. Inflows are 258 cfs. Jamestown Reservoir is currently at pool elevation 1430.9 ft, at the base of the flood pool. Inflows are 77 cfs. Throughout the summer Jamestown Dam releases will be adjusted to match the inflow in order to maintain the summer target pool elevation.
Pipestem Dam releases will be set at 125 cubic feet per second (cfs) for the next two weeks, then increased to 250 cfs on July 1. In mid-July, the release will then be adjusted in order to evacuate the flood pool and reach the September 1 target elevation of 1442.5 ft. This release schedule was set in order to facilitate ideal spawning conditions for the crappie fish population within the reservoir. The combined release will vary over the summer as both Pipestem Dam and Jamestown Dam releases are adjusted. All releases may change depending on rain.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A trial is beginning for a man accused of fatally stabbing an acquaintance at a Bismarck apartment last year.
Morris Pederson is accused of killing Greg Comes at Patterson Place, an assisted living and low income apartment building. Police say Pederson and Comes met at Ruth Meiers Hospitality House, a homeless shelter.
Police identified Pederson as a suspect after he walked from the apartment complex to the Burleigh County Courthouse in a blood-stained shirt and asked sheriff’s deputies to help Comes, who was dead.
Pederson could face a maximum life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A hearing in the appeal of a man sentenced to death for killing University of North Dakota student Dru Sjodin (shuh-DEEN’) will delve into gruesome details.
Attorneys for Alfonso Rodriguez Jr. are set to argue whether Sjodin was raped and whether she died from wounds to her throat. The defense says both points were used to sway the jury in the death penalty phase. Prosecutors say the arguments have no merit.
Rodriguez has been on death row in federal prison since 2003. His final appeal was filed more than five years ago.
Sjodin’s mother, Linda Walker, says the hearing will discuss “hard aspects” of the case, but listening to the arguments pale in comparison to what her daughter endured in her final moments.
The hearing starts Tuesday.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Authorities are warning about a scam involving an impostor claiming to be a North Dakota sheriff.
Someone claiming to be Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney is calling people in the Fargo area, telling them their outstanding warrants will be dismissed if they send money.
When people call the number back, the voicemail claims to be Laney, but the sheriff’s office says it’s not.
Anyone receiving the calls is asked to contact the Red River Regional Dispatch Center.
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — A group of Devils Lake residents is keeping a dream alive by reworking a plan to build a local activity center.
The Devils Lake Journal reports that city voters in 2014 rejected a sales tax increase to pay for a $23.5 million wellness center and convention center.
The new proposal only includes one building, a two-story activity center with two gymnasiums. It would include locker rooms, storage, a conference area, offices, a community room, kitchen and concessions, a weight room, space for classes and cardio, a track, an indoor playground and restrooms.
Devils Lake Parks and Recreation Superintendent Terry Wallace says a nearby outdoor skating/hockey arena will also be enclosed.
The Park District plans to fund about $3 million of the project, and a proposed half-cent sales tax would fund the remaining $22 million.
NEW YORK (AP) — Courts or legislatures in at least a dozen states have declared that some children have three parents. It’s an arrangement sometimes called “tri-parenting.”While the cases are rare, they have appeared in states from Florida to Alaska.
Advocates say legal recognition reflects the realities of some families.
They include gay couples having a child with a friend, and a man seeking to remain in a paternal role after DNA shows someone else fathered the child he’s raising. New York’s first “tri-custody” ruling involved a husband, his wife and a female neighbor who had all become romantic partners and set out as three to have a child.
But some courts and experts have raised qualms that more parents could mean more parents could mean more conflict.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Public Service Commission has approved a 3.7 percent electric rate increase for Montana Dakota Utilities Co., amounting to about $7.5 million in revenue.
The fixed monthly charge for customers will increase 11 cents to 46 cents per day.
The commission says the company had originally asked for an increase of 6.6 percent, or $13.4 million. An interim rate increase of 5.8 percent was approved in November.
The PSC is authorized to permit, site and regulate certain business activities in the state, including electric and gas utilities, telecommunications companies, power plants, electric transmission lines, pipelines and railroads.

COLLEGE WORLD SERIES….
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 61-year-old man sitting behind the Louisville dugout at the College World Series sustained a minor cut to his head when he was struck by a bat that flew out of a player’s hands Sunday. Burke Perry of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was in the second row when Louisville’s Josh Stowers lost grip of his bat as he swung at a pitch against Texas A and M to end the third inning. Perry had about a 2-inch cut on the top of his head. He said the bat “just skimmed me.”
WILD…
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Wild have exposed defensemen Matt Dumba and Marco Scandella and forwards Erik Haula and Eric Staal for the NHL expansion draft. The league announced Sunday protected players from the 30 existing teams for the Vegas Golden Knights, who join the NHL this season. The expansion draft takes place Wednesday.
Three-time Stanley Cup champion goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, Nashville forward James Neal and Anaheim defenseman Sami Vatanen (SAM’-ee VAH’-tah-nehn) are among the high-profile players available for the Vegas Golden Knights to select in the NHL expansion draft.
Now it’s on Golden Knights general manager George McPhee to spend the next three days poring over the list of available players and select one from each of the NHL’s 30 teams.
Fleury was left unprotected by Pittsburgh after he agreed to waive the no-movement clause in his contract. The Penguins instead protected Matt Murray a week after the second-year goalie led them to win their second consecutive championship.
The Predators were put in a bind in exposing Neal once they elected to protect a fourth defenseman instead of the 10-time 20-goal-scorer.
Vatanen was the odd man out in being left unprotected from a deep and talented group of Ducks defensemen.
NEW YORK (AP) — The NHL salary cap has been set at $75 million for this season in a slight increase over last year.
The league and NHL Players’ Association announced the cap and the salary floor of $55.4 million in a joint statement Sunday. The figures are set by the league’s hockey-related revenue.
It’s an increase of $2 million from the $73 million cap last season, as players elected to use their escalator clause to raise it.

LONDON (AP) — British security officials say hate crimes directed at Muslims have increased nearly five-fold in the wake of several attacks in Britain blamed on Islamic extremists. An official says counterterrorism officials are closely monitoring terror activity linked to far-right groups but most of the recent attacks have been traced back to individuals rather than groups. Ten people have been injured by a 48-year-old white man plowing a van into a crowd of worshippers.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser may be getting new legal representation as the special counsel investigation into Russia’s election meddling heats up. Jared Kushner has been represented on business matters and other issues by Jamie Gorelick.
TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s coast guard is investigating why it took nearly an hour for a deadly collision between a U.S. Navy destroyer and a container ship to be reported. Coast guard officials said Monday they are trying to find out what the crew of the Philippine-flagged ACX Crystal was doing before reporting the collision to authorities 50 minutes later.
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran’s ballistic missile strike targeting the Islamic State group in Syria serves both as revenge for attacks on Tehran earlier this month and as a warning that Iran could strike Saudi Arabia and American interests in the Mideast. That’s according to a general in Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard, which launched the missile strike on Sunday night. Gen. Ramazan Sharif said it was a warning to both Saudi Arabia and the U.S.
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — After being doused in alcohol and burned by her partner in 2011, Maira Maidana has finally found the courage to tell the truth about what happened to her that awful night. She says she owes that courage to a grassroots movement of tens of thousands of people across Argentina who have mobilized to fight violence against women. Called Ni Una Menos, or Not One Less, the movement has spread rapidly worldwide.
