BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say a man was arrested for
attempted armed robbery at a downtown Bismarck loan business.
Police say that a man wearing a ski mask walked into Money Bags on Monday afternoon brandishing a knife.
Police say the would-be robber appeared to have “lost his
nerve” and walked back out of the business.
A passer-by chased the 45-year-old man, tackled him and held him
until police arrived.
Responding officers arrested the man, who has not been formally charged.
Police say an ambulance was called to check on the suspect, who
was having trouble breathing after the chase.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Mandan man accused of possessing child
pornography now also faces an unrelated charge for allegedly having
sexual contact with a child.
68-year-old Harold Fetzer has been charged with felony gross sexual
imposition.
He was charged earlier this month with possessing prohibited
materials after officers identified him as a possible participant
in a peer-to-peer network that shared child pornography.
He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 14 in that case.
An affidavit says Fetzer told a Mandan police officer
interviewing him about the child pornography case that he had
inappropriately touched a child for the past five years, starting
when the child was 5. The child confirmed it.
A message left at a telephone listing for Fetzer was not
immediately returned.
DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – A man involved in a methamphetamine lab
explosion in Dickinson has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
40-year-old Shane Cook pleaded guilty Monday to felony reckless endangerment and possession of a controlled substance.
The blast in his apartment on Feb. 11 forced an evacuation of
the building and Cook required medical attention.
Southwest District Judge William Herauf also ordered Cook to pay
restitution for the damaged caused to the apartment. A restitution
hearing has not been scheduled.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A man accused of leaving his 2-year-old
son home alone so he could go out drinking has been sentenced to
two days in jail.
32-year-old Adam Samuels pleaded guilty to child abuse and neglect on Monday.
South Central District Judge Bruce Romanick sentenced Samuels to
two years in prison with all but two days he had already served
suspended.
Police say officers responded to an apartment on June 22 to
check on a child who a woman had heard crying. An apartment manager
unlocked the door, and police found the boy alone inside.
Prosecutors say Samuels had left his son alone so he could go to
the bar and drink.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A new audit says student fees have been
used to buy first-class plane tickets for the dean of North Dakota
State University’s graduate school.
The audit questions how NDSU and the University of North Dakota
use the fees they require students to pay.
The Associated Press obtained the audit from the North Dakota
state auditor’s office. It’s being presented to legislators
Thursday.
The report says student fee money has been spent on everything
from first-class plane tickets to iPads for some NDSU employees.
UND used fee money to buy “Greek Life” T-shirts.
Some fees are being used to build up large reserve funds. It
says UND’s business school has a $370,000 reserve from the $150
semester fees that business students pay.
University officials dispute some of the audit’s findings.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s largest newspaper is reviewing
its policy on same-sex wedding announcements in response to a
controversy that arose online.
The Forum reports it received multiple negative comments on its official Facebook page and an online petition was started after it refused to print a Fargo couple’s same-sex wedding announcement.
Forum Editor Matthew Von Pinnon says the newspaper’s rule is
being reviewed.
Marriage in North Dakota is defined under state law as “between
one man and one woman.”
The newspaper’s parent company, Forum Communications Co., also
owns the Grand Forks Herald, The Jamestown Sun and The Dickinson
Press.in North Dakota.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Hot, dry weather in North Dakota is hurting
crops and grazing land in North Dakota.
The Agriculture Department says in its weekly crop and weather
report that most crop conditions have declined over the week. But
the heat also has accelerated the maturity of crops, and the
harvest of small grains is ahead of the average pace.
The report says about one-third of the pasture and range land in
North Dakota is in poor or very poor condition, and 39 percent of
the hay crop is in those categories. Stockwater supplies are 40
percent short or very short.
In world and national news…
RENO, Nev. (AP) -Mitt Romney is accusing President Barack Obama of leaking classified details of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, as well as details of covert actions in Iran, for political gain.
The Republican presidential candidate made the accusation in an address to the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Reno, Nev., Tuesday afternoon.
Romney says such leaks compromise troops in the field and he’s demanding an investigation.
WASHINGTON (AP) – The Congressional Budget Office has taken a fresh look at President Barack Obama’s health care law and still expects it to reduce federal deficits.
The CBO says spending cuts and tax increases in the law more than offset new spending. It says repealing the law would increase the deficit by $109 billion from 2013 to 2022.
SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) – Bulgaria’s prime minister says the suicide bomber who attacked a bus full of Israeli tourists last week did not act alone.
He says a sophisticated group of conspirators spent about a month in the country planning the attack that killed five Israelis and a Bulgarian bus driver.
However, the prime minister stopped short of blaming Iran or the militant group Hezbollah. Israel claims they were involved.
CHICAGO (AP) – The man convicted of gunning down the mother, brother and nephew of singer Jennifer Hudson will spend the rest of his life in prison.
William Balfour received three life sentences for the 2008 killings, plus 120 years for other charges.
Balfour was married to Hudson’s sister. Prosecutors say he shot the family members in a jealous rage.
LONDON (AP) – The International Olympic Committee is praising the London Olympic organizing committee ahead of Friday’s opening of the 2012 Summer Games.
The IOC says it’s expecting the games to be a major success, despite the continuing challenges with security and transportation.
Meanwhile, Britain’s Home Office says it will seek an injunction to halt a strike planned for Thursday by immigration staff at U.K. airports.
