Johnner Ward Jr. entered his pleas to charges of bank robbery and use of a firearm during a crime of violence Monday in federal court in Bismarck. He faces at least seven years in prison and up to life when he is sentenced May 10.
Ward and Colt Schneider are accused of holding up American Bank Center in New England last Oct. 18. Ward was later arrested in Texas and Schneider in Florida.

CHICAGO (AP) – A judge has ordered two gang members held without bail in the death of a 15-year-old Chicago honor student. The two are charged with first-degree murder in the death of Hadiya (hy-DEE’-uh) Pendleton. The girl was shot dead just days after she performed at events for President Barack Obama’s inauguration. First lady Michelle Obama attended her funeral. The girl’s parents will be sitting with the first lady tonight at the State of the Union speech.
WASHINGTON (AP) – When President Barack Obama announces Tuesday night that 34,000 U.S. troops will be home from Afghanistan within a year, it will mark the next phase in the administration’s plans to formally finish the war by the end of next year. An official says Obama won’t announce troop numbers beyond 2014 in the speech, and hasn’t yet made that decision. The White House has said it would be open to leaving no troops in Afghanistan, though it’s likely that a small presence will remain.
UNITED NATIONS (AP) – The U.N. Security Council is pledging further action against North Korea, calling today’s nuclear test a “clear threat to international peace and security.” North Korea had earlier conducted tests in the weeks after it launched rockets in 2006 and 2009 — and this third test followed a rocket launch in December. The council says it’s a “grave violation” of U.N. resolutions aimed at limiting the North’s nuclear program.
WASHINGTON (AP) – Here are two words you don’t often hear together in Washington — budget surplus. The Treasury Department says the federal government reported a rare surplus for January. And it’s on track to run its smallest annual budget deficit since President Barack Obama took office. JACKSON, Ohio (AP) – An Ohio school board is set to decide Tuesday night how it will respond to a federal lawsuit seeking removal of a portrait of Jesus that hangs prominently in its middle school. Opponents say the large portrait unconstitutionally promotes religion. They filed a lawsuit last week on behalf on an unidentified student and two parents. The district says the portrait was donated by a student group and has been in the school since about 1947.
